PETZL NAO+ vs FENIX HM65R-T | Which headtorch will I choose? | Headlamps for runners | Run4Adventure

If you follow the channel, you'll know, I'm a big fan of the Petzl NAO+ when it comes to my running headtorch. Recently we were contacted by Fenix and asked if we wanted to test and review their new exciting trail running headtorch - the HM65R-T. I was super impressed with the performance of the Fenix headtorch and it's left me with a bit of dilemma...
Both impressive headlamps indeed but which one will I choose?

    I bought the Fenix straight after the original video from Loyd and have never looked back. The light it gives out is amazing, and the simplicity is great, just turn it on and run. I've had it now had it for two weeks and done about 5 lots of 5KM runs with it and I've yet to recharge the battery. Changing the brightness and head fitting on the go is super simple to and doesn't involve stopping and taking it off. WORD OF WARNING: I live in the wonderful Suffolk (UK) countryside, where my go to trails are footpaths round the edges of farm land. The power of the beam on full is so bright that it will get farmers out of bed and chase you thinking you are casing their property. One did ask where I got the touch from as he wanted to get one himself :-). P.S. Also when you get one, don't put it on your head, turn it on full beam and then turn to your better half and say 'look how bright this is'. You will get a smack.

    @@Run4Adventure Do you think the HM65R-T is stable enough compared to the HM65R. When running in the past with a single strap head torch they have often felt like they are going to slip. I'm doing my first 24hr race in Aug. so want to make sure I buy the right torch. :)

    Awesome review. I'd appreciate a review on red safety lights (Lumens, visual distance, burn time, etc). They seem to be an afterthought for headlamp manufacturers. Most of us do our training runs at least partially on surface streets and during the winter months you're running in the dark whether you run before or after work. Having a really visible safety light is very important to a safe training run. As you mentioned they are starting to be required race kit and if you have to buy one anyway it would be nice to spend money on quality. Thanks again, I really enjoy your content.

    Thanks for this awesome review and comparison. Love the energy in your videos, makes them really enjoyable to watch! Recently picked up the HM65R-T, and it's the best headlamp(torch) I have ever used. It's a bit heavier than I would like, but I will take that compromise for a brighter and longer burn time to get myself through an entire night being able to see without needing to change a battery. Just a note, the torch does dim down to about 250 lumens on the 400 lumen settings (spot and flood) after about 30 minutes, but maintains that brightness throughout the rest of the burn time. Still bright enough for any trail. You will hardly notice this though as your eyes adjust to the darkness. The burn times on this torch are simply amazing!!

    Finally someone from the ultra running community reviews a Fenix headlamp! I’ve been using Fenix headlamps for years and have always wondered why I don’t see other runners using them. The quality is so high, they’re waterproof and so simple to use. One other thing to mention is that most Fenix headlamps are digitally regulated which means the beam is steady throughout the entire burn time unlike most other brands. Getting through a 100 mile race without having to change a battery (easily changed if necessary)and having adequate light is what you want.

    I have the Nao+ and have used it multiple times a week for a few years now, so it paid for itself multiple times over. I have 2 batteries an I love that I don’t need an extra red led backlight just for simplicity. And since it charges via usb and I don’t need a cable, I can charge it everywhere. I regularly top it up at work. That being said I have multiple Fenix flashlights and I absolutely love them. I have one which is permanently in my car, just in case. If this Fenix headlight was out at the time when I bought the NAO, I would have probably bought the Fenix, because everything I have from them is simply great and has proven to be virtually indestructible. And the brightness of Fenix LED’s is unrivalled. So it’s a hard choice, but because Belgians are crazy and careless drivers, I would probably still go for the Nao because of the integrated back light that I don’t need to charge separately. If Fenix would make a headlight with a red back LED than it would be a no brainer.

    I completely agree, I have the NAO + and own several Fenix flashlights as well, and both companies do solid Engineering work. The build quality on all Fenix Products is impressive. I can actually see uses for owning both headlamps (if you’re a gear head too 😊 which I think is fun). The Petzl is very comfortable and I do like the ease of the large knob on the side but I agree Lloyd, making either choice, you would not be disappointed. As an Electrical Engineer, I can say that the only other area of gross specsmanship fudging is in the Antenna world. Fantastic review Lloyd, I had to watch this video again as it was so well done.

    Really enjoyed this Lloyd - have you ever tried the MH10/MH11 Led Lenser? I used the MH10 on the Arc in 2019 and it was a boss. Only problem I found with it was it's not comfortable unless you're wearing a buff/hat. Clearly that's fine for the Arc but (possibly!) not the summer ultras. Did it bounce much, I'm eyeing up the hm70r as I have a few 21700 cells kicking about. 1500 lumen is small try in the torch world, even my 7000 lumen astrolux isn't that much, you can get obscene torches. Edit - decided on the Nicron H25, it's the right size, output, price, runtime and features I'm looking for, fingers crossed it'll be reliable. Plus I'm a sucker for the Samsung LH35 emitters it uses, means a lovely tint and no green. Edit edit - Dammit sofirn has a 2400 lumen model, oh well that'll be for another day haha

Will need 5 hours of light and also a spare battery. The Fenix looks perfect in all honesty, what I'm concerned about is having all the weight at the front - does it not bounce down whilst running? My current headtorch has the battery at the back and a strap over the top of the head as I find they sit much better, but given your review this is maybe something I don't need to worry about with the Fenix? Anyone else out there using this model of Fenix and can provide any feedback? Thankyou. NOTE: I've just had a google and there is the HM65R which looks the same head unit and spec but with a Top Band and without the adjuster knob. This might be closer to what I was looking for.

    Hi Mike Yeap still using it and I've actually just filmed another review featuring a new headtorch from Fenix, it will be going live this evening 👍 I don't have any issues with bounce or movement with the HM65R-T. I always tend to use a Buff or a beanie for comfort when ever I run with a head torch so that helps. The other model you've seen is very similar to the HM65R-T, a different strap system and I don't think it's as bright but it's definitely still bright enough! Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

    Cool video. I was looking at the petzal for my light. I run at 4 in the morning, so light is necessary when on the trails. I ended up going with the Biolite headlamp 750 because I like their mission and it looked like a quality light...and it is! It’s my first, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it gives plenty of light with a few different modes and a cord to be charged if running through the night. I also use the ultraspire 600 waist lamp which comes with a handy pouch for your fanny. The position of the light is different than eye level, so the shadows cast allow for better depth perception, especially when there’s only subtle shifts in terrain. This is my main light source. Last, I use my rear bike light and clip it on the back of my shorts for high visibility! Thanks for the video! Peace. Chris

    For charging a 18650 battery can be charged using a standard charger (and even relatively nice chargers are $20 US or so). The versatility of easily interchangeable batteries might make the biggest difference. A typical 18650 battery weights about 45 grams so you could have multiple spare batteries and still come in at a lower weight than the Petzle NAO. Also, when the battery comes to its inevitable end of usable life, a new 18650 can easily be swapped in. Unless a person is an electronics wiz who can fix it, when a built-in battery is at the end of its usable life it renders the entire device useless.

    If you are looking at these headlamps, it's worth doing some follow-up research on the claimed burn times. The Fenix is a great light, but it cannot sustain anything near 400 lumens for 10-12 hours. The Nao+ also step downs its brightness over time compared to the claimed specs.

  • @Run4Adventure

    @Run4Adventure

    2 жыл бұрын

    You're right about the Fenix, it is a great torch, Infact they're both pretty good units 👍 The brightness does drop down a bit offer the 10hrs if you have it on 400 but it's still definitely bright enough to run with. Also because that dip is very gradual you don't really notice it happening. As far as follow up research goes. I've run the Arc of Attrition 3 times with the NAO+ and that's a winter 100 footrace on the coast paths of Cornwall. Depending on the weather conditions I've got a good 10hrs of burn time from the NAO+ with it set on around 300 lumens and using the reactive technology. I also used the NAO+ for UTMB (104 miles, 10,000m elevation) I had to run through 2 nights and I didn't have to change the battery or charge it up. You always have to take the claimed burn times from all the headtorch companies with a pinch of salt but I've actually been out for long night time runs with both of these head torches. Obviously I'm not measuring the lumens output while I'm running but they both definitely gave me enough light so I could clearly see where I was running for long periods of time. I think that's the best form of research if you ask me 😊 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

  • @HaasSauce

    @HaasSauce

    @@Run4Adventure Thanks. That is certainly helpful to hear how it has worked for you in the field. In terms of actual measurements, there are a few sites that have independently tested them and they show a significant drop in lumens long before the big step-down you see at the end of the claimed run times. (E.g., the Fenix on medium drops to about 165 lumens in under 30 minutes, and then stays at that level for about 10 hours until it steps down further at the very end.) Ultimately it just needs to work for whatever a person's particular needs may be. But if you have some specific requirements in mind, you can't necessarily rely on the claimed specs to get you there.

    @@Run4Adventure Yeah, you're right re the 400 lumens. It's a death ray amount of illumination power LOL. The build quality is def there for sure and easy to clean re mud and dirt getting all over it to from caving. I see a few others also using it for caving. My only concern with this application, as apposed to night time trail running, is that one must depend upon the switch integrity NOT failing during caving. I guess that's why for miner's lights, the switch mechanism is so simple, it's almost impossible to fail.

    Based on your review a couple of weeks ago Loyd, I tried to order a HM65R-T from Fenix UK. Their website had it showing in stock, so I went through all the faff of ordering only for them to tell me they didn't have it. Really puts me off a brand when my time gets wasted due to websites being out of date, especially in the online times. I can't find this thing in stock anywhere anyway.

    Sorry to hear that Ian 😔 I've actually contacted them today because a lot of viewers have said the same. Unfortunately with all the crazy things going on in the world at the moment it proving difficult to get stock. Production was stopped with the global pandemic so they only had very limited stock of the torch. Fenix said there should be stock in the UK in around 2 weeks. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel it's really appreciated 🙏

    Yeah no reflection on the channel mate. I'd watch you read a shopping list out! I can live with stock shortages but it was the website not updated that irked me (I was probably in a bad mood!). I checked on Amazon and they are quoting March 11 onward but that probably coincides with Fenix' own stock. I try to avoid Amazon where i can.

    If you're looking for an idea. I'd love a tutorial on how to monitor way point split times on very undulating courses, where pace isn't constant. Can you program it into a watch, do you have a laminate card for example? I have SDW100 in June, I'm hoping for sub 28hrs but would like to know how I keep myself on track?

  • @Run4Adventure

    @Run4Adventure

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's a tricky one Ian especially over the 100 mile distance! I don't normally set anything on my watch but I have carried a laminated card a few times in a races. A lot of the time it's good to have something to aim for pace wise but you also have to be ready to adapt that plan! If I'm running 100 miles on a Hilly course I find it best to run off heart rate, especially in the first half of the race. By keeping that heart rate low you're going to keep way more consistent, also a lot easier to hydrate and get calories in 👍
