I had a demo of Pulsars a while ago and I agree with what you said on their somewhat "synthetic" sound presentation. It's almost like I could hear the sound being processed by the DSP. I could also hear that "reverb" you mentioned. Everything sounded like it's in it's own room, even mixes that I know are very dry and upfront sounded more "wet" and recessed. Strange monitors.

I’ve been eying the Ex Machina’s for a little while now and I don’t have the heart to try a pair because I know I’ll have to buy them and I really can’t afford to do that right now but someday! I run a small post production crew and once we get our facility up and running I’d love to outfit every room with Ex Machina’s but that’s gonna be super spendy so gotta figure all that out, but until then I run an old pair of Adams and I’m happy enough. They pay my bills but I’ve been GASing over these for a minute

Check out the Ganymede’s too. Same speaker but smaller and cheaper. They just don’t extend as low (by about 10Hz).

So question. Where you tried the DSP monitors, and believe you can hear the translation, were you connecting to them via analog or digital?

Analog out of my X16. It was something I heard comparing the PMCs to the PSIs.

@@EdThorne Okay, so it’s the additional AD/DA conversion step that you’re perceiving, and not simply the quality of the monitor itself being not as good, and that could potentially be improved if connecting digitally (where possible).

Really? I did not know that, however I always thought that the extra conversion would add(not necessarily in a good way)unwanted artifacts to the signal and not be transparent, as with all conversion(IMO)it changes the original(for better or worse is up to u) and I (personally)want my speakers to be as flat as possible, with only the room changing them, as it's one less thing to worry about! So I always hook em up analog, and have never delved into hooking them up digitally. However at present, I haven't upgraded my interface in years as it's always a pricey perspective, especially if your going Burl(which is my favorite that I've worked on).@@Truth565

The problem with Ex Machinas is the DSP. Especially when your tracking live…latency is a problem

Then you should probably run them in low latency mode for tracking

@@EdThorne yeah I even have the sonar works and I didn't use them on these monitors and haven't needed to I've done so many mixes on these already and my clients love where the mixes have gone also the transients are so clear to me on these so they make the depth sound incredibly sensitive to me and I tried so many monitors before I landed on these and these were just my favorite they sounded the most modern

I believe that about the 3:52 statement is not only about actives and dsp but also design philosophy that gives you this feeling! In that i can say that 3 way speaker active or passive (yes with passive crossover build in) there have big gap in different approaches! We see mid domes in the middle part and on the other hand cones that do both the job to it but with them acoustic signature on! This particular case (speaker) we have a coaxial to give the hard job of midrange area to it! And i am talking in about 800-2k area that a tweeter cant work well , cant get all the way down to this and cone speakers have to have very lightweight cone construction to be fast and "airy" . There in the exchange between the dirty blurry mids of the cone to get on lightweight fast dome , yhere i feel that goes all the "hm" in sound signature of them!

for the cost they better be amazing

I did wonder, then thought you choose these via this video... not the reveal then... interesting EX MACHINA have been my theory choice for a long while and only price see me going toward the MUM's... but again, I need to do the whole process of testing everything for myself

@@EdThorne The PSI I hadn't considered much before this... but did think about the barefoots... from what you said they wouldn't suit me at all... so glad to be sent towards the PSI's... they are much cheaper lol... looking forward to your final choice!!! Everyone should do this those with their etups. In a budget it's not so doable to test different speakers, so budget speakers often require a choice by review but you should never spend big without trying things first for yourself
