BEST SETTINGS - OBS (+ others) - CPU vs GPU Video Encoding…

Should you use GPU encoding or CPU encoding for game streaming and game recording? Hardware (NVENC) vs Software (X264)? Here’s the answer, laid out simple, with examples…

While I used OBS for these tests, the advice holds true regardless of your choice of software (as it just sits in front of the encoding deeper down anyway).

Wonderful tutorial, Blunty. Not only do you describe that the settings mean, but WHY they are applicable to specific situations (ie. explaining why "it depends"). Good advice here, folks.

Literally the only thing I could find regarding hardware vs software encoding that wasn't 2+ years old, and it actually shows the quality difference to boot! Thanks man, you've gained a subscriber. I do have one question though. Does nvenc result in a higher filesize than x264? I'm guessing the difference is minimal thanks to the equal bitrates, but I don't really know. I'm kinda new to this whole thing.

WOW! Thank you! Finally something authoritative from someone who can actually show the reality. I don't record games but do video podcasts, sometimes live streamed and sometimes recorded. I recently started to look (again) at OBS and came to the conclusion it wasn't an option until I upgrade my system (currently 2015 Macbook Air) ... ok ... please keep the laughter down to a gentle roar :-) .... when using OBS the CPU usage ranged between 28% and 33% only, yet the fans start spinning so hard it is implausible with the audio ... BTW I'm using an external blue yeti mic on a boom. So now I'm looking at new systems and weighing up whether I need better CPU or a really good GPU ... already written off the M1 chip for all of this which also excludes the new iMac 24" ... so now into the 27" iMacs and they have AMD cards 5500XT (8GB), 5700 (8GB), 5700XT (16GB). The decision I have to make is whether to go for the [CPU/GPU] 3.8GHz 8-core Intel Core i7 with the 5700XT (16GB) or the newer 3.6GHz 10-core Intel Core i9 with the older 5500XT (8GB) .... yes I could go top of the line on both but this is already pushing the budget and I want to get what's needed instead of excess. What I've taken from your video is it depends on which I'm doing. Just unsure which is the wise move for 'normal' video as in not gaming videos. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Kind sir. I don't know why I only just now found this video, but thank you very much for this informative and demonstrative video. I KNEW I should've been using CPU encoding for streaming cause my CPU can more than handle it, both old and new PC. But my friends always blindly tell me to use GPU, I knew something was off. Thank you good sir that sounds like the narrator from LittleBigPlanet!

explained so well and helpful but one question when u got an old cpu like and i5 6500 cpu with onboard dedicated graphics how do you optimise for this for a cleaner and less choppy/laggy video recording experience when it comes to editing if you can get your hand on a psu & gpu for a specific pc if can answer this it would help me out on what to and settings to set in either obs/elgato softwares for encoders. i made one upgrade but having issue getting hands on other hardware required.

Hi Blunty, just letting you know that AMD's VCE encoder has come included with OBS Studio for about a year now. The plugin you mentioned is more or less the parent project whose stable versions get included in OBS Studio. Just thought I'd let you and others know that *it does work out of the box*, they do not have to seek out this plugin for the function anymore.

Thanks for this, I was so confused on why my streams were not the same as they used to be and it was because i switch my encoder to hardware on accident. I would be at 5% CUP used and it would still look bad.

I've spent weeks and weeks testing these settings on OBS and I couldn't agree more on the research you have spent and shared with us here!!! Some things I would recommend for those who want to stream: The lower the resolution and frame rate you couple with any given bit rate will result in better looking *high motion scenes*. Also, why use OBS vs OBS Studio? Anytime you have a lot of detail to render on the screen such as running through grass or otherwise rendering a copious amount of particle effects, you will notice a lot less "chunkiness." Again, this is for a given bit rate. You can, on both CPU and GPU encoding, crank them up for higher quality, but that sacrifice usually* isn't worth it. Try that out for yourself. If you often run static screens with not much changing in them - like for instance a podcast or a game of poker, you need not worry. Running at a higher resolution will showcase the detail in your content and can, and will, be a good thing! Just beware of those high motion screens, which occur a lot in gaming. A last little note on the whole streaming subject using OBS specifically, there are mainly two versions on OBS website. There is the studio version and the original version. I find, that if you want to go beyond the 1080p barrier, to use OBS original. (Unless that has changed since this comment!) I prefer using Original OBS for recording games and I prefer using OBS Studio for Streaming. - Just a little side note, I no longer stream so this isn't a plug hahaha. Thanks for the informative video Blunty. Much
