Best scene of Doctor Zhivago (with Lara's Theme by Maurice Jarre)

Музыка

When my mother died I was a very young man. I had fallen in love with films when she and my beloved big sister took me to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I was only three years of age. The day after my mother was buried I went to see Dr Shivago to escape horrible reality. The beauty of the cinematography and in particular the gorgeous musical score eased my loneliness and pain. I have always loved this film like an old and comforting friend.

Allan, I know what you mean when you describe this movie. I saw this movie when it first came out when I was in 6th grade and did not really understand it. I saw it again when I was in college at age 16, studying Russian. It opened up the whole world for me. There it all was.... do this day, it is both haunting and familiar to me. I translated a chapter from the original Dr. Zhivago which was written by Boris Pasternak, a black market book in the Soviet Union, for my Russian final. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel piece prize in 1958 but had to decline it due to the Soviet pressure as it depicted the socialist revolution from 1905 to WW II.He passed away in 1960 and never had a chance to see his beautiful work of art or his poetry loved by so many. ♥️

There is that opening scene where his mother is being buried. The lid placed down and nailed shut. Pretty powerful and it's been decades since I last saw it. Also when supreme court chief justice John Roberts was asked what his favorite movie was during confirmation, he stated that it was Dr. Zhivago. Another interesting story is how the novel was smuggled out to the west during the soviet period.

@@pookiecatblue In my unsolicited opinion, the book is a very difficult read. The movie screenplay does not follow the book per se. The ending of the book and character shifts are quite remarkable when compared to the movie. Having seen the movie numerous times on Sunday afternoons, I finally read the book 50 years after the movie was made to compare the two. I was amazed at how David Lean adapted the book into this marvelous love story along with Robert Bolt's screenplay. The movie is idealized. The book was harsh reality. I would suggest you read the book and understand too, that it is a translation from the Russian and then you can wonder at how this movie creation was made. It was pure genius. As a footnote to history, I recall how big an impact the book had on American society. I recall in 1965 taking a train from New York City to Elmira NY and many of the passengers were reading the hard copy book on that train. It was then the equivalent to the Harry Potter series of books in the new millennium taking the world by storm..

Omar Sharif has never really been truly honoured for his masterful, tender, restrained portrayal of Zhivago (one critic at the time, I think, called the performance 'wooden' - hardly!). There had been talk of Paul Newman taking the role, which would have led to a very different film (including scenes with him and Rod Steiger chewing up the scenery in a method acting showdown, perhaps?), not necessarily a lesser one, just different...Newman's cerebral, angry, 'American-ness' might have thrown the rhythm in a different way (note that Steiger IS the only American in the cast...the outsider...a deliberate choice?); who can say? (How would 'Jaws' read with Sterling Hayden as Quint and Jan Michael Vincent as Hooper?). In an interview years after the film Sharif spoke of how Lean asked him to underplay the role because Yuri has to carry the whole film; he is a witness to everything going on around him. To have a Romantic Russian with tempestuous emotions might work in the pages of fiction but the rhythms and demands of storytelling in cinema are quite different - and Lean knew this. Lara is the emotional core of the film - and Lean lets Christie (and Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Courteney and Rod Steiger and Klaus Kinski) and play with all her passions (and Freddie Young lights her in all sorts of marvellous ways that reveal her devastating beauty - look at that slash of light across her eyes!), but Yuri has to stay solid, an observer. Such an aesthetic choice might not be to everyone's taste but I think it works very well: Lean (and Robert Bolt) knew that WE essentially are Yuri - we see what he sees, he is a conduit through which we fall in love with Lara, feel guilty over Tonya, reject the opportunism of Komorvsky, feel love for Yevgraf; this cannot be cluttered with too much of the personal - Sharif/Yuri is an idealist at its most pure and sensitive. He offers commentary that is rich poetically, but spare in its capturing of situations ("Have you ever loved a woman", "I hate what you believe in but not enough to kill you for it.") Lean and Bolt also knew that film is a form of nudity and this nudity must be carefully draped: we never actually see or hear any of Zhivago's poetry - it is left to our imagination to build and idea of what it is like (any examples presented would only be disappointing, no matter how well written).
