Best Portuguese Food!! 🦞 SEAFOOD MOUNTAIN + Lobster Rice in Matosinhos, Portugal!

MATOSINHOS, PORTUGAL - Some say that Portugal has the best seafood in the world and today we’re going to find out why. With pristine cold water Atlantic ocean spanning the west and south coasts, Portugal is a seafood paradise. Today we’re eating our way through Matosinhos, a port and fishing town just outside of Porto.
Huge thank you to Taste Porto (tasteporto.com/) for taking me on this incredible tour - they are the best! Thank you André Apolinário and Ricardo Brochado, it was amazing to hang out with them. Check them out for incredible food tours in Porto.
Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos - The local market is one of the best places to begin your seafood tour. The market is clean and organized and home to extremely fresh seafood of the day. You can also get all sorts of vegetables and fruits while you’re at it.
Restaurante Tito 2 (maps.app.goo.gl/2jbGqUBNa8tYF...) - Andre arranged for us to go to one of his favorite seafood restaurants in Matosinhos. Here you can choose the fish you want, and they will grill it, or prepare just the way you want it. The Rodovalho Grelhado - Grilled Turbot was fantastic, as was the Lulas - Grilled Squid, and the Pargo Grelhado - Grilled Porgi.
Restaurante Os Lusíadas (maps.app.goo.gl/W8DTiynoWQH7a...) - But the highlight of this Portugal seafood tour was Restaurante Os Lusíadas, an upper scale seafood restaurant that serves the absolute best and freshest seafood you can imagine. It was indeed among the best quality seafood I’ve had in my life. We had Amêijoas à Bolhão Pato - Clams Portuguese Style, a huge seafood cocktail platter for 4, Arroz de lavagante - Lobster Rice, and Robalo ao sal - Sea Bass Salt Flambée!
If you love seafood, Matosinhos is a place you have to visit when you’re in Portugal!
Thank you again to André and Ricardo from Taste Porto (tasteporto.com/)!

Actually in Portugal we're not that much of seafood lovers 😅 There's the occasional sardine, tuna, shrimp and lobster but those things... Require WORK to eat them. You have to dodge the occasional bone and break carapace to get to the meat.... And the protein feel-full ratio is not that beneficial. Soooo yeah... Meat gets the throne. Seafood is light food you know... It's understandable that your girlfriend hasn't mentioned you this... We just don't think too much of it. This is like "Food tourism" in a way... They're looking for specific cultural things that the country has a specialty in it. For sure... You won't eat good seafood like this in other countries, that's GRANTED. If you want a "seafood rollercoaster"... Yup, Portugal is the place

@@Trip4man Thats not really true, at least not in the regions closest to the coast. Shrimp, mussels and clams are always present as starters in any event here. Plus, a lot of seafood places located near piers are usually filled with locals. I am Portuguese and lived in Spain for a long time before coming back. Although you are correct in both of them being underrated, I think they are very different cuisines. My feeling is that on high end cuisine the Spaniards have us beat since the times of El Bulli. They consistently have multiple restaurants in the top 10 or 20 of the world because their expert chefs are REALLY good and they have some incredible ingredients. But for day to day, traditional food the chance of you walking in a restaurant and feeling really happy with what you are eating is higher in Portugal, and my wife (who is russian) pointed out a good reason for it. See I (and a huge percentage of Portuguese including men) can cook 95% of what I eat in a Portuguese restaurant, of course not to the same level of expertise, but quite approximately, so when I go out and ask for something that I know I can eat, I have a clear reference of what things are supposed to taste like or feel, and that puts some pressure on the cooks to be better at what they do. I have travelled quite a bit and that experience of just walking in a random restaurant or tasca and always feeling welcomed and well served only happened to me in one other place, Italy.. Sorry for the long reply.

I'm definitely not a fair eater. I mean, I can't even come close to Mark, in terms of the quantity of food I could intake in a day. I would be a sort of fingerfood eater. But this seafood of Porto made my mouth water. It was indeed a huge plater display of seafood. It was as if I got dive into a seafood bed.

Don’t forget to try out the Lamprey rice, a traditional dish from the Minho region. It’s seasonal, therefore only available from January up until April.

Gooseneck Barnacles are amazing. Easy to get here in Oregon, but we have a dumb limit of 10 per person on them. I kinda get it, but makes it hard to do a meal unless you get lots of people to forage them. Taste like crab to me, look like alien something you don't want to eat.

Gooseneck barnacles are called percebes in Spain. People risk their lives at low tide to try and harvest them since they only reside on large rock outcroppings. I had them for the first time in Paris as part of a seafood tower. I have great respect for the harvesters of them since it's a risky diving endeavor, not unlike diving for abalone in Korea, which are done by very revered ladies who free dive without air tanks due to laws about harvesting abalone.

Best seafood in the world is in Italy and japan. Unfortunately tourists just come to italy searching for pasta, pasta, pasta 😂 And the influencers never show the rest of italian cuisine, which is expecially fish and seafood. The dishes we´ve seen in this video, you can find in any seafood restaurant in Milan. See what they prepare in Sardegna, Toscana, Sicilia, Puglia, Liguria, riviera Adriatica...and so on.

Have you been to Portugal? Have you tasted this dish? Don't talk about what you don't know. Why are you offended at someone else's food being praised, where does this inferiority complex come from?
