Moving to Costa Rica was the best decision we ever made, but if I could have gotten advice from someone who lives here...it would have made our move easier!
So, today, I am giving you the advice I would give myself if I could go back in time and talk to my younger self.
In Nov 2013, we were searching for the best place to live in Costa Rica...and we didn't have plans on going back to the states. We sold everything, so we plan on retiring in Costa Rica.

I studied in Costa Rica for a month to finish up my undergrad degree & stayed in Puerto Viejo for a weekend excursion & was warned about drugs but I had the exact opposite experience. Never once did someone offer me drugs, nor did I witness anyone selling drugs, & never witnessed any type of criminal activity. The people were very friendly & not once did I feel unsafe.

You are right about the people being very friendly. I think Puerto Viejo is fun and beautiful but since there are a lot of tourist, there are those individuals looking to prey on unsuspecting people. We lived there for almost a year and were out in town for supper and walks almost every weekend...lots of exposure.

Okay. I've been to Costa Rica twice before but it has been about eight to ten years since I have been back. I'm retired and live in the United States. My wife and I have been entertaining the idea of relocating there permanently and I believe the time has come. She's sending me down on a reconnaissance mission. She has only been there one time and that was with me for a very tourist like trip. Resort based in other words. I have seen many Costa Rica videos before, but this is the first one that came up and that I chose to watch in my new earnest search for the home. Thank you for doing such a great job and having so much information concisely packed in a short span of time. I will move on to the other videos.

I watched it soon after you released it, when Michel and I were still in Morocco. And it stuck with me. I've talked about it periodically since, about all the information you offered. Now that we've lived in Costa Rica for almost a year, I have to say that you were spot on with all of this. In the meantime, we are visiting, asking questions and learning. We would like to live near the beach but not in a touristy town. I'm sorry to say...you've been given some bad info... From what you are telling me...young family, (possibly children), no party scene, then Puerto Viejo...that is a drug-ridden party town. Don't go there. Ojochal...not bad, but not developed and no easy access to shopping for a young family. Uvita, not bad...more developed...but still not what a young family needs. I highly suggest going anywhere in the Perez Zeldon area...near San Isidro. You will get everything you need, not touristy, so no high prices... You can find good schools and even an English speaking school which is far better than any public Tico school. Fun activities will be a challenge ANYWHERE in Costa Rica as they don't build anything for kids. But, if you get them involved in nature, hiking, trails, waterfalls...then you are golden. Sounds like you would benefit from getting direct access to me and a great group of people who are already here and can answer all the questions you may have. The cat we adopted when we were here...but she had kittens and we traveled a lot of places with a dog and cats. CR is very dog-friendly....MOST Ticos do not like cats....and only have them around to keep the rodents and snakes away. Most Ticos only keep dogs for cheap alarm systems...so you have to get used to seeing dogs on a 3 foot chain. I find most Ticos don't appreciate animals the way most Americans do.

@@raymonaoconnell8180 Great...now that I know...here are my suggestions. If I were y'all, with the given info, I would stay at Esterillos...VERY PEACEFUL, very safe, no drama and you can get everything you need. But really no party scene. If you want a little party action, go north a bit to Playa Hermosa. Waters are perfect for surfing, more of a party environment and it could be possible to pick up a little waitress-type work or another type of work because of the many BnBs and Restaurants. IMPORTANT: It is illegal for you to work as a tourist and if you are caught you could get deported and NOT allowed back in the country for 10 years. The only thing you could legally do is work online, or prostitution. (I am NOT suggesting Prostitution...just saying. I don't judge.) Another option, because you have a GUY with you...(saying you feel safe and that he could or would protect you) Jaco beach, but it's full of prostitution, big-time party, NOT peaceful...so just FYI. A better option is on Nicoya Pennisula. which is not very touristy and not too developed, is Samara beach. kinda similar to Hermosa Beach, with lots of monkeys on the beach there. Hopefully, that helps..and I hope I haven't offended you. Just giving you facts.

Thanks so much for all the work you are doing with these very informative videos! I lived in Central America, that is, in Honduras in between 2000 and 2003. Circumstances forced me to move back to Germany where I am from. But my heart refused to move along with my body. So right now and as our gov's behavior has become more and more strange especially through the last year I am eager to find my way back to either Central or South America. I would not want to move back to Honduras though since the situation there is even more hopeless than when I left 16 years ago. So I am looking into the options I might have. I am a registered medical nurse over here and maybe for me it would be possible to make a living as such in the medical field. Yet I don't know about the income I could expect or if I even would be allowed to work as such. God has a way, that's for sure.

Hi Allen & Rebecca! I visited C.R. about 8 years ago and absolutely loved it! I stayed very close to San Jose but had a friend there who was my tour guide. She took me everywhere! I currently live near Chicago but I am looking to make a move with a major lifestyle change. What are your thoughts on the way the Covid situation was handled, and continues to be handled? Is it a lock-down situation like many Cities in the US, or do you feel most of your basic freedoms are still being granted? I would need to get my business going again once I get settled in. I have a had a business for close to 30 years here and 95% of it can be done online via e mail. You mentioned the bank; how do you feel about banking in general? I am sure I would have to move my clients to direct deposit, as I assume mailing paper invoices through our Postal Service as I do now would no longer suffice. Speaking of mail, what are your thoughts on receiving and sending mail such as cards and letters back to the States? I may need a package mailed to me from the States from time to time, so I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the Postal Service there. Thank you so much, Allen and Rebecca! Perhaps our paths will cross one day!

In my opinion, CR handed the COVID situation better than most countries. They had fewer people get sick and die than most. The lockdown was NOT bad at all and now people come and go almost normally. Everyone wears a mask and washes hands at most places...but it is almost normal like before COVID. Banking is OK...you can get a bank account in Costa Rica, but it is NOT necessary. I do MOST all my banking from the USA. But I do have a bank here in CR too. It is easy to pay my bills online with a CR bank account. You can forget mailing anything. It takes TOO LONG. One time my wife mailed an important document and it took over 4 months to get there. I think it got lost. The mail system in CR is terrible. If you need packages mailed to from the USA...then it is best to us FedEx or UPS. It is expensive, but it will arrive quickly. When I send something from the US to myself in CR...most of the time it takes 30 days and many times my package gets stuck in Customs and then I have to travel 3 or 4 hours to the custom office to get my package. But I have to pay taxes and storage and a lot of headaches. Hopefully that helps. In the future, it is best to contact us with questions like this in our forum. That way, everyone can benefit from your question and our answers. Sounds like you want to do what I am in the process of doing. So it all depends on how convenient you want be to town or how remote you want to be. I am very remote for specific reasons...which makes what I am doing much more difficult. But to do what you want and make it much easier...(nothing is EASY in Costa Rica) then look for anything in the Perez Zeledon area....within 30 minutes of San Isidro. This way, you have access to a Walmart (although I hate Walmart, I love it for Costa Rica, without it, almost impossible to find basic things). But being near San Isidro makes it easier to find what you need to become sustainable. If you are serious about what you want to do...I highly suggest connecting with me in the Members ONLY Area.
