Just a historic comment. The name of Rivas also refers and honors the Nicaraguan city of the same name, where on April 11th, 1856 took place the most important battle of the Costa Rican National Campaign against the filibusters that took power in Nicaragua and were intending to invade the rest of Central America and establish a slavist state, based on the doctrine of Destino Manifiesto. The battle was won by the Costa Rican army and the national hero, Juan Santamaría died in that battle, helping ignite a building (the Mesón) which the Fiibusters were using as a stronghold. For a country that didn't have a war of independence, that war is always celebrated as a huge triumph against autocracy, while it also sparked a Cholera epidemic that killed 10% of our population at that moment.

I am a U.S. citizen who resides in Florida but I am Costa Rican by birth. My parents moved back to Costa Rica in 2009 and they rented a house in General Viejo which is a small community about 10 minutes from San Isidro. I would visit annually and the Perez Zeledon area became like my second home. It is also my favorite area in Costa Rica. Unfortunately my father passed away in 2017 and my mother is now living with one of my aunts in a suburb of San Jose. I really miss Perez Zeledon with its laid back relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery.

You are in luck....in Costa Rica....there are NO real mountain bike trails. (maybe a few in San jose) CR is not nearly as advanced as most places in the USA. However, the great news is...people ride their mountain bikes ALL OVER COSTA RICA. There are literally thousands of miles of mountain bike trails/roads. In Costa Rica you have more gravel roads and trails than you do blacktop roads. So, if you like Mountain biking...(I love mountain biking). You will have a blast and see some of the most amazing places and views on a mountain bike in Costa Rica.

How would you compare the mountain biking possibilities in Perez Zeledon compared to other regions? Are bikes allowed on most trails or prohibited in certain cases?

Living in Costa Rica & Facts about Costa Rica thank you for the videos , it will help us narrow down what areas to look in . Out of all 3 I definitely like Rivas. Not touristy and an authentic Costa Rican feel not to mention the beautiful natural views. Putting it on my list for places to live . Can’t wait fir the next video. Ooh and I heard the dogs in the background , I’m bringing my 2 pups ..here I have to worry about ticks in the summer , is there anything you have to worry about as far as safety and health of your dogs?

YES....the dogs you hear are the neighbors dogs...so be very careful in picking a place if NOISY dogs are a problem. We have a dog and a cat, but very well behaved. Make sure to get everything in order before bringing your pets. After arriving...taking care of them is easy and the cost is comparable. We never have a problem with ticks or fleas...but we do give them a monthly treat that stops worms and etc along with the liquid flea stuff on the spine of their back.

I would definitely choose Rivas to live in. San Isidro is too hot, noisy, and busy. I lived in San Isidro when I was a child back in the 70s but it has grown tremendously. I really don't know much about Tinamaste but I've driven through it many times going to Dominical.

Your videos are great. I've been researching for a long time as we're planning to move for 1 year (initially) to the Perez Zeledon area, and your videos are by far some of the most clear and useful pieces of information I've found :) I do have a question (which probably you hear it all the time!): how's the connectivity in the Rivas and Tinamaste area? Are there any good/reliable internet providers? Is cell phone signal reliable to use it for internet/meetings? Both me and my wife need Internet for our jobs, so we need nature as much as we need Internet! :D Thanks!

Thanks for your kind words Oliwa! We totally understand your need for INTERNET and NATURE. We are the same way! As long as you are within about 400 meters of the main road...connecting to the internet in either Rivas or Tinamaste is not a problem. (SOON...it will be even better and the 400 meters will not be a problem as they are installing Fiber Optic and that will make Internet LIFE much better) I think the Tinamaste area....is NOT a problem is MOST areas even further away from the main road....simply because of how many Gringos live in that area. However, in Rivas where I am...I am about 500 meters away from the main road, which means NO INTERNET for me....(from ICE (gov't provider) which means...I pay an arm and a leg from a private provider. But that is a possibility almost anywhere...if YOU are willing to pay for it. At the moment, I am installing Internet in the MOST remote area of Costa Rica....(sssshhh it's a secret) Maybe more on that later. For cell phone coverage...you are usually OK as long as you are NOT too far remote.

Hello. Please excuse my basic English but my language is French. I would like to go on vacation to Costa Rica, and eventually reside there afterwards. I can't stand the heat and the beaches don't interest me too much. I would like to have a "spring" type temperature. On the other hand, I would like to live in a place not too far from a medical centre. So what interests me is to live at a certain altitude. In addition, I would like to have information where you can rent a vehicle (San Isidro?). I like the description you make of Rivas. The Spanish language is not a problem for me. I thank you and congratulate you for your videos which are extremely interesting. Very cordially.

Thanks for taking time to comment! You're Awesome! It sounds like you should live anywhere in the mountains around San Isidro in the Perez Zeledon area. That area has everything you need. As for finding a good place to rent a vehicle...You'll have to search and try...it is tough to find a good place...but depending on how long you stay, the best thing might be to buy a cheap vehicle...use it...then sell it back to the dealer when you leave.

Remember the Thermal Volcanoe Water in San Gerardo de Rivas.

We count to leave in CR in fine years and so we prepar it..reading..chanels you tubes.. groups Facebook..and two trip in 2019 (1650 kms..carabean coast..Tortuguero..Volcano areas Arenal and Poas..Jaco Quespos Osa and Puerto jimenez) 2021( Grecia, Poas, Péninsule Nicoya..Jicaral Curu..Samara Tamarindo Miravalles and Tenorio..and finish again by Arenal..again 1650kms)..normally a third trip to discover Central pacifique..when you speak about climate..could you tell more about weather..about raining season in areas San Isidero Tinamaste..Dominical..we re looking à good place for us ..( climate..Green nature ..close with the local habitant and not like area Tamarindo..thanks and best regards. Unfortunately not, but we do have some very awesome River views! Rebecca says she prefers those over the ocean views from the mountain. Oceanview here are NOT the same as in the states. This is just in my opinion...but unless you can see the white waters of the ocean, it is NO different that looking at the sky. You can't really tell the difference and that is why Rebecca loves the River views. You can see the water moving, where as, with the ocean views you can NOT and since we're here in Costa Rica....NEVER see any ships, or boats in the water. So...unless you can see white water and see water movement...what's the point, however, every TICO wants to show you some property with this TINY ocean view...and most days...you can't tell if you are looking at blue water or blue sky??? Are you sure that's an ocean view??? LOL Hope you understand the point I am trying to get across. Sorry, no ocean views from Rivas.

Reminds me of the smokie mountains. Are there airport shuttles that can transport you to the Peres Zeledon area that you know of?? and THANK YOU!! for all of your information....

@@mommabear7052 Yes...actually there is an active small (puddle jumper) Airport in Quespos...about an hour from Dominical...so if you live in Perez Zeledon...you could easily go to Quepos and fly from there to San Jose. I completely forgot about that option... THANKS for asking...it reminded me of a great option for folks like yourself.

You will NOT have any trouble finding a school in any town....THAT IS from 1st grade up. Very difficult to find anything for a toddler...like a daycare or a toddler school. You might find something like that in San Jose area??? I know they have a daycare in Rivas...but I don't know much about it....but I was surprised to see one. It was the FIRST daycare I have seen in Cost Rica....but keep in mind...we don't ever live near the big cities either.

In my opinion....it would be difficult to make any large amount of money from growing organic food. So many locals grow their own food and locals are not going to pay for Organic Food. My neighbor makes a living from growing and selling Organic Food, but BARELY MAKES ENOUGH to survive. BUT COULD YOU grow enough for you to be self sustaining...YES. If I were you...I would look for property above Rivas. The closer you get to the end of Rivas (near Mount Chirripo) the better the soil. Hope that helps you. @@julienf1682 YES and NO....There are several good options in my opinion. Work Online - (tough learning curve but possible- we do it) Rental Property as AirBnB if in the right place is great income. (but there is an investment there) Service Type Business - (little startup if you have a needed skill, i.e. Cut Hair, Dog Grooming, etc While there is NOT a lot of options...other than what you said...(Owning a business) there are some options. In my opinion, Costa Rica is an Entrepreneur's Dream Come True. Tons of Money Making Opportunities...but you have to be willing to work and/or invest the effort. Hope that helps.

Good question. Each of the small communities have self appointed Leaders. They get together and raise money to do things in their community...usually trying to get a Saloon which is a community building near a soccer/football field. That is about the only kind of community event that I know of...Costa Rica is NOT like the US where you see lots of community events for different things...but they do have some. I've just not see or experienced much of that.

gringos here never adapted, even not try to learn spanish. I'm sorry if I'm rude but it's what I've seen in my 36 years of life. On the other hand I have Japanese, Taiwanese, French friends, and yes they adapted well to the country and the community. I know a couple of gringos who have lived since 2011 and it is as if they were just getting off the plane. It had been a few years since I had not seen them and I thought they already spoke good Spanish, and to my surprise when I tried to speak something simple to them they were frozen and they told me that in English better. Even foreigners from other Latin countries do not adapt to the community either, but the gringos is a special case.

@@granospaz4156 You are stating something that is true in some cases. WE have traveled all over Costa Rica and have spoke to many Gringos who have adapted and doing GREAT THINGS for their community. However, YOU are in a big city and I'm sure you don't see or know nearly as many Gringos. Just because YOU know some that do NOT adapt or do NOT know the language...that is NOT true for everyone. So, YES, it is RUDE to say it the way you did. It is NO different that if I said ALL TICOS take advantage of Gringos. While it is TRUE that MANY Ticos will take advantage of Gringos...IT IS NOT EVERY TICO. Most of the Ticos and Ticas we meet are very nice, very kind people.

Please tell us about the medical facilities in San Isidro! We are elderly and love nature but are afraid to live too far from good English speaking doctors and hospital!

Hey Edie, no need to fear. Lots of retirees here in San Isidro. The hospitals are great and MOST of the doctors speak some or enough English. I didn't have any problems when I went to the clinic/hospital in San Isidro. Had a little bump examined on my head, (turned out my brain was trying to out...Guess I was losing my mind) Lol just teasing.... Was only a ingrown hair or something. The examination and meds...etc was under a $100 I think... Bottom line....You'll Love this area and Hospitals are GREAT.

In costa rica our social security is universal so if you have an emergency you'll get medical asistence for free

@Caleb Mora Thanks for your input...however, you should probably explain better. What you are saying (If I understand correctly) is for Ticos or Gringos who have become a Resident and are paying Caja.. As long as a Tico is paying Caja (Caja is the medical insurance) you will get medical care for free. However, if a Gringo is NOT paying Caja...he WILL NOT get medical care for free. From my experience....and I've gone to the hospital a few times, I do NOT pay Caja because I am NOT a resident YET....and the hospitals, the clinics, and the doctors would NOT take care of me unless I could PAY for the Services they provide. NOTHING IS FREE. But if I am mistaken....Please Calab, give us the correct information and state the source so I can verify the information for our subscribers. 😎

No you can not...but the beach is less than one hour away...then you can do all those things there...

So often you mention that you're mountain people and like the cooler temperatures - what do you mean by cool? What temperatures are you talking about?

Where we are now...it stays between 60 and 72 degrees fahrenheit most of the time. Cool and seldom ever gets hot.

Having a Walmart makes a huge difference. If you ever lived in Costa Rica and found out HOW HARD it is to find even the most basic things...then you would really appreciate having a Walmart. It also helps people who are going through culture shock. So, while a LOT of people hate Walmart...when it comes time to buy basic things...I can bet, you will appreciate shopping at Walmart if you ever go to Costa Rica.

@@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica Just Illustrates the need for an independent distributor. Might be a decent business venture for us, we already own a grocery store and I know how hard it is for locals if they don't have access to a distributor.

No, but the beach is close....you can swim there.

I spent over 15 years in Tinamastes area. Been all over CR and there is no need to take your series any further as PZ has it all: Small city with hometown feel, all the amenities, very little crime, great climate, cool mountains, unpolluted streams, great people and a half hour form stunning realitively unpopulated beaches. But, nightlife? hahahaha Where? You totally lost me with your promotion of WalMart. wtf is that? It does little more than put all the Mom and Pop stores that make SI so charming, out of business while taking away jobs and offering low-paying ones in return. We had everything we needed before it rolled into town. 2 years in San Isidro area and 'Rivas'? It's pronounced: ree-vus. Clueless.

Noticed Costa Rica houses are not stone like Mexico.

I don't think I have ever seen any stone house. MOSTLY concrete or concrete blocks.
