Best Phone Interview Tips - How to pass a phone interview with a recruiter
Learn my best phone interview tips in this video. You will learn how to answer common questions you can expect to get asked from a recruiter or a head hunter during a 20 minute phone interview. Recruiters have very specific interview questions they ask to pre-qualify you for a face to face or in person interview with a hiring manager. A phone interview with a recruiter is the first step in getting a face to face interview and with a few of my best phone interview tips, you'll pass it with flying colors.
If you have a job interview with a head hunter or recruiter, the fist thing they will do is schedule a phone interview or a video interview. The phone interview will determine whether they invite you back for an in-person interview. Headhunters like to keep the interviews short, so don't prattle on if you're a big talker.

Now, when you get a call for a phone interview from a recruiter; you might even want to ask them if, “Are you a third-party recruiter or are you an internal recruiter?” This will let you know who you're dealing with and that information may or may not be valuable to you.
Now, your initial recruiting interview is probably going to last about 20 minutes; it's just totally pre-qualification. And what they want to do is they want to drill down into your situation to see if you are a good enough match.
The phone interview questions that they're going to ask you will be simple and all they really want to know is if you're interested.

Recruiter 1) Internal recruiters (big companies) ; 2) External recruiters (third-party, mid-small companies) Find people that match the job description, turn those people to HR/ hiring manager for further interviews ~20min, pre-qualification, to drill down to see if you are a good enough match - Tell me about your situation (what are you doing and are you happy doing that work) - What your time frame is (how soon do you want to get out of what you at) - What type of compensation are you seeking (be cautious, bring up salary during the initial call) - What do you like or don't like this place / Why do you want to leave - What are you looking for (they want to know what you want to be doing, and make sure that is largely what this job is, they want people who are excited/ enthusiastic about the work they are doing) - Do you have references/ Who are those references? (Don't go too detail, just give some generalizations) - Good questions to ask (about the position: travel, location, with whom I will work with, what can I expect, allow me to grow in a certain way, etc., engaging questions to show you are interested in the vision/ mission and excited about what they are doing) To express yourself in that way: try to smile when talking on the phone (it can be heard), speak with enthusiasm and excitement Ask what are the next steps ("when can I expect to hear back from you"), and get the contact information and ask if you could follow up (also help them to remind you). Basically this call is just to see if there is mutual interest. Think about what's important to you in this job, express to them to see if there is an interest, and if so, advance you to the next round (another phone/ Skype/ in person interview with the hiring manager)

I watched maybe 20 YT videos about how to pass a phone interview and this is the one that helped the most. I passed the interview with flying colors. Thank you so much, Don!
I used your tips for my first job interview, I got the job then I got laid off due to the Covid19, now I am back again ;)
Thank you so much Don for creating this video. I applied these methods today to my phone interview and the recruiter actually stopped mid-sentence and stated that she was going to push me through to the next steps, manager with the hiring manager. I am definitely on to watching Top 30 interview questions and practicing for that interview! Thank you again.

This video really eased my nerves, I had a meeting scheduled with a recruiter today and I watched this video beforehand and it taught me kind of what to expect. I was preparing for some kind of actual interview, but it just ended up being a few questions instead, like you said it probably would be. Thanks!
I was randomly selected for a phone interview by a recruiter on LinkedIn and I’m so excited. I’ve been at the same position 6 years and ready for new opportunities, perspectives and growing my skills and creativity in a new environment! Needed the refresher on interviewing, thank you for the tips! 🎊
I have an interview this week. And this helped alot. Also, your voice is so soothing!
I sometimes struggle with short recruiter interviews. Some call you and it's essentially your first interview. They ask a handful of the common interview questions, you get a chance to make an introduction of yourself. Some ask you like 2 or 3 questions, and it comes across pretty informal. They might ask some variation of "tell me about yourself." They come across as a person going down a list of people to call. I almost feel like I can't express myself as I normally would. I usually do much better with the first type.
Don, I can't thank you enough for this video, and all of the interviewing resources you have on your channel. I just had my first job interview in almost 14 years. Your tips and suggestions helped to make my phone interview go incredibly well. Thank you, Don!!!!

Hey Don! Your channel helps me a lot. I have to share with you something about follow up calls. I interviewed. I did very well. Didn't hear anything. Kept calling and following up. Week in. Week out. For aover 6 weeks. Then....called Monday at 10 am. Got to the manager. He asked where I was, and told me to get my butt to training. I was hired and NO ONE told me! Was 4 hrs late to training on my first day.....stayed 4 years and had a blast in the early 90s! FOLLOW UP TILL THEY SAY COME IN AND START RIGHT NOW. LOL. #trueStory

Had a 2nd interview with a large company. My interviewer said she wasn’t sure if the position quite fit my background but she knew of 6 other positions that would work better. She asked if it would be okay for her to work with HR to facilitate those interviews to find the team that would mesh best. I sent a thank you note and searched the website to find the roles she mentioned; I found them. Am very used to being active and would love to send a follow up to both HR and the person that conducted the 2nd even though it has only been 3 days. I also just cleared 2nd interviews at 3 other companies and just finished up the final with another company. I’m waiting to hear back as to the results of the final. Given all this, I’d love to follow up but part of me thinks I should wait at least a week.

think quickly and be succinct. But before your interview, think of your past projects and the value you brought and the problems you solved. doing this will help you to think on your feet.

Nice video, thanks for all the great info. I am in a unique situation: An internal recruiter for a big tech did not call and directly sent an email with all these questions ? She is asking all key info like salary expectations, why change, current duties, am I looking for switch, how far am I with other opportunities ? etc all on email ... I am not comfortable responding to person with whom I haven't even spoken once ... what would you do ?
Have an interview tomorrow!

Things like location and number of internal candidates affect the hiring outcome as well.
