In today's video, Christian dives into Patek Philippe's newest World Time Chronograph - the 5930G!!!
For a long time, the Patek Philippe brand was pretty exclusively for middle aged men loyal to Patek. They've made attempts in the past to attract younger potential buyers, introducing the Nautilus first in the 1970s, and then again with the Aquanaut in the 1990s. Both watches were attempts to capitalize on a combination of elegance and sportiness, pioneered by the AP Royal Oak not long before.
They've since made other attempts, including the 5960 Aquanaut Chronograph which, essentially, relied almost entirely on the addition of a sport complication and some bright colors to try and make up for the fact that the brand, essentially, has no idea how to communicate to young watch geeks. It flopped, unremarkably, but they may have tried a bit harder with one that, though coming out before the Aquanaut Chrono, flew entirely under the radar.
The 5930G is a World Time Chronograph, the brand's first since a piece unique in 1940 made for a doctor. That watch and this one are almost entirely unrelated visually, but they share plenty of subtle DNA. While both complications are certainly present, the chronograph definitely feels like more of an afterthought than the world time, mostly due to the design required to execute both together in a way that's legible. Ultimately, it's a watch that scratches the itch for something that rides the line between sporty and high horology, and offers a watch that, though modern, is still incredibly classic.

I think this largely depends on what the next generation values most out of a brand like Patek. Honestly, because of their rich history and lean towards the understated I think that digging into the potential of simplicity with unique variation might be a good way to go. Take the Patek 96 models.... maybe up the size (not too much) to a sub 38mm, stick to its underlying simplicity and pull something between A. LAnge and NOMOS.... Going asymmetric and going unique pop of color works for them, but what a Patek might consider could be the approach to the minute hand in it's representation. Rather than central minutes, sub second counter or no-counter at all, utilize something of the dial and add depth to show the passage of time while keeping true to the classic style. Patek has done some of this, but really it's not about holding on to a Patek for the next generation (as the old advertising stated) change how the brand communicates to its' audience and lean into the relationship you want to foster with those who hold your brand up. I think attracting a new audience doesn't start with the design, but it starts with how the brand interacts with potential buyers and admirers and ends with a design that doesn't try to "table-flip" but changes how we sit at the table.

Personally i like the Calatrava series better then the Aquanaut and Nautilus. I like the discreet, elegant, classic design in a watch. The sporstmodels from most brands are to flashy for my taste. The World Time Chronograph here though has a to bust dial for me. Its a bit to much going on there. Nice video though.

Credit where it's due Christian, you made it clear this was a sponsored spot right up front, very happy to see it, hope it continues. Now to your question - I could certainly see lots of shiny young investment bankers rocking this when their first bonus check lands. Beautiful watch, but the question is - do any Millennials know about it? What's Patek's advertising campaign backing it look like? Is it in any medium that Millennials actually engage with?

I think their stories & posting with an emphasis on content in the descriptions is one of the best on IG from a brand (my opinion). i love this watch although i wished that tthe chronograph had hours too. A shuttle way to do this is to have a register with both hours and minutes 60 hours 60 minutes. In that way they would keep the dial uncluttered and they would still render the chronograph more useful

I think that they don't really need to do anything. They have their own identity and changing that would imo even alienate some customers. They have everything they need to appeal to a younger customer base and I think that marketing-wise, they don't need to buy ads online because basically everyone who can afford a Patek will already be aware of the brand in itself

I actually have a question for T&H and the group here... what would you consider to be the ideal Patek to buy that would be the first/best Patek you could own and not want others OR be a good way to start a 2-3 Patek collection? Granted, this is largely subjective based on taste, lifestyle, budget, etc... The way I see it, regardless of those three personal points of consideration there has to be a good balance. Maybe making this an objective mission doesn't make sense, but I feel that at the level of the holy trinity there should be a widely agreed upon consideration. There are of course the stock answers of Calatrava and Nautilus, but if you skipped those, what would you consider?

Get the only practical one, the Aquanaut. Incredibly useful is the world time function, very cool instant switching of the hand when travelling. Only sophisticated collectors and those in the know understand that it's the model to get. The Nautilus is for pimps, the Calatrava for oldies. You sound young, late 20s early 30s so listen to my advice (I am knowledgeable okay lol) and save up for the Aquanaut.

Patek can't give these watches away. The wealthy collectors are NOT going to trade their beautiful WT only 240 based watches for the 5930 - they'll likely buy a 5x70 chrono to pair with it. This watch is very impressive, but what do travelers do with a 30 minute chrono?? That basically leaves the aviation enthusiasts - pilots & astronauts - who would definitely like the 30-minute flyback feature and he WT can be used to track ZULU time. That is a very small audience, which is why there are so many of these are listed on Chrono24. The good news is you can get these heavily discounted. And it is a very good Patek.

To directly answer your question instead of just bitching at those complaining they can't afford the watch: people, especially young people, are more interested in other languages, cultures, countries, and people more than ever, and consequently they are *traveling* more than ever. High-end watches have always had "watches for travelers" in some form or another, typically offering some sort of capability to track multiple time zones, because the clientele of high-end watches has always tended to travel more than Joe Schmoe. I would say that now they need to double down on those complications and watches intended to appeal to those who travel frequently. The most valued complication, for me, in a watch (after time and date) is a toss up between a day function and a GMT function. A day function because I own a business and consequently don't have anything resembling a regular schedule and so I often don't know what fucking day it is (salaried people with regular work schedules don't have this problem, hence why a lot of people don't see the appeal of day-dates and say things like "How can you not know what day it is?! lolololol derp!"). A GMT function because I have friends and business contacts in multiple area codes and being able to tell at a glance if I'm about to ping their phone at 3 in the morning with my annoying whatsapp message is useful information to have on my wrist.
