    Early in the show, they tenderized meat by putting it in a dryer with a bunch of ball bearings. They had to wear hearing protection to even be in the same room with the dryer. It was just incredible the kind of acceleration and speed, and of course the end result of - and I paraphrase - Jamie standing in the wreckage of the car and concrete block and saying something like "Well, can you pancake a car? One of my favorite one liners is from one of the myths involving vehicles controlled with a cable. One of them didn't go where it was supposed to, and Jamie, in a singsong voice said, "It's going to go into the water!" as it slowly rolled toward the water. I also enjoyed the giggles when something unexpected happened and they realized how close they came to dying. My favorite example is the border slingshot myth when they used the football upright as a slingshot, and the projectile failed to release from the pouch.

    I worked for a laser manufacturer, in the Bay area, while the show was on. I was actually approached by a MythBusters producer, in their preparations for the Archimedes Mirror episode. The idea was, if the mirror failed, they wanted to have a high-power laser standing by, to burn the sails with light. I tried to make it work (incentivized by the idea that I might get a few moments of screen time, as the expert/operator on the laser). But, our sales management ultimately decided that this should cost the show more than they were willing to spend. To be fair, we had a lot of equipment product-placed in the 2003 Hulk movie (in the Dr. Banner lab scenes) that ultimately never appeared on screen (probably, because they scaled the company logos up to a NASCAR extreme). So, they wanted to make sure to have more than 'exposure' to show for providing a system (and doing regulatory clearances, etc., etc.)

    The refusal for the permission to film the grenade bit makes sense to me. One of the things I did in the Army was learn to train others on particular things. There is something about that act of knowing you're holding a live bomb in your hand that short circuits way more brains than you'd expect. This is why everyone has to do that at least once in basic training/boot camp but it's even more important with folks who will have to do it regularly. It's always been interesting to me that one of the things which makes for the absolutely best soldiers is not just intelligence, though that is a component, but that utter calm some few humans have in dangerous situations. It can, to a small degree, be trained into folks but that degree is quite small indeed. Holding a live explosive in your hand then throwing it is one of those moments when you discover which way you function. It's an interesting aspect to this that the more gungho the individual, the less likely they seem to be to handle that well. Anyhow, I'm not even a little surprised they couldn't get permission for this sort of thing. Even modern militaries with insane amounts of money can't manage to accomplish that safely every single time. This is why there are always trainers whose job is to grab the trainee and cover them with their own body if they throw the pin instead of the grenade. I sometimes wonder if someone will someday find a training method which works and what other effects that training will have on human psychology.

    I remember being in basic training and we were all lining up to have a go at throwing a grenade. The guy in the next line a couple places ahead got his go and he pulled the pin and the handle popped off...but he was just standing there dumbfounded with the armed grenade in his hand without throwing it. The sergeant with him slapped the grenade out of his hand and over the waist-height wall he was supposed to throw the grenade over quicker than I've seen anyone do anything in my life and pulled the guy down under the top of the wall with his entire body weight. That soldier got chewed the fuck out for his failure to throw the grenade after that. I did manage to throw it, but I was a bundle of nerves and was afraid the whole time that I might accidentally throw it too close to myself. I never want to have to handle explosives ever again if I can help it.

    My late father told me a story about the grenade throwing training area at Fort Benning. Private pulls the pin, freezes and drops the grenade, sergeant kicks it into a ditch nearby not quite quickly enough. Private was fine, sarge was in bad shape. Dad suggested sarge might have faced disciplinary hearings for not having trained the private correctly.

  • @JustNilt

    @JustNilt

    7 ай бұрын

    @@jamesjarrait2231 Nah, that's a pretty standard training issue. The discipline would have been for not properly following the safety procedure, putting the trainees and others at risk. This is a thing that instructors specifically train for. It does not involve kicking live grenades. That's a great way to kill others. You use your hand because it's significantly more controlled.

    1:57 I remember that bit! That’s actually one of my favorite episodes because it was the first viral video special and all the myths ended up being confirmed. I especially loved the build team’s mildly insane ramp-up of the sawdust cannon. I’ve never thought about non-dairy creamer quite the same way…

    Jamie one-liner: "Quack, damn you!" I say this to my cats when I'm giving them treats and they're daring to NOT meow for them. Adam one-liner: "Seventy percent chance of science!" Usually said when I'm about to do something nerdy. 😁 Also an oft-repeated Adam-ism: "Well THERE'S your problem!"

    Grenades are sketchy. Never had a problem with a live one luckily but in training before we got to handle real ones we had to throw training ones that are just a hollowed out shell with a hole in the bottom to prevent pressure buildup and a fuse which as far as I know is the same that they use in the live ones but just painted blue. During the training ( the dude was fine) one guys went off, the cadre told him to freeze and went up and inspected him, what he said I remember every time I handle anything explosive. he said: "Don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong"

    maybe this is the opposite of a one-liner, but one of my favorite moments of the whole show is when you guys used a rocket powered steel wall to completely vaporize a mid-size sedan. One of the only times in the whole show's run where both Adam and Jamie were completely speechless

    Two of the one-liners from Mythbuters I have incorporated into my lexicon are ""Well there's your problem!" and "I reject your reality and substitute my own." I have two questions regarding two myths from the show, First is regarding the Robin Hood splitting an arrow with another arrow. I remember in the original episode at least (not sure about the revisit as it has been so long since I have seen it) that a different arrow was used to fire at the wooden arrow to try and split it. Would you know if it would have made any difference if both arrows were made exactly the same rather than two different ones? Second question is to do with the JATO Rocket car. The rockets you guys used were stacked on the back of the car vertically. I have always wondered if the rockets had been put on horizontally instead of stacked vertically, if that would have made any difference?

    I have a t-shirt that says, "I reject your reality and substitute my own." I think I got it at the Mythbusters Exhibition in Chicago. I also really felt it when Adam mentioned how far he had come from when he first started compared to what he knows now in terms of TV production. I know it is not just me who is able to relate to that, but mine is sort of twofold. I have a teaching degree, but my first real teaching job came when I moved from the USA to South Korea to teach English, and that is where I still live and work. My first year of teaching and my first year of living abroad are one and the same, and after 14 years, I can look at what I know now about both and compare it to what mistakes I made in my first year, and even my first few years. There is a certain confidence that one discovers once those new skills are learned. You spoke to my soul, Adam, and I just wanted to share my experience with that kind of self-discovery.

    Hi Adam and Dan at work there is a saying that has come out of the Myth Busters era, when things are not coming apart how you would want them because something is a bit corroded, then you sometimes hear "go Myth Busters on it. If first you don't succeed add more C4" or when something breaks " well there is your problem !!"

    Now I want to see someone test those rounds for water and other non-standard rounds, I don't recall armor piercing rounds for instance which I'd assume would handle the shock better and be designed more for getting through things. It's been a while but while I think I recall jacketed rounds I don't recall them using tungsten core rounds or similar.
