Impressario Brian Potter is willing to do anything to make a go of his club Phoenix Nights, and his band of loyal staff and regulars are all keen to pitch in as well. But somehow fate and drunken horses seem to be conspiring against them.
Some comedies secure cult status after just one episode. The first series of Phoenix Nights, created by and starring Bolton-born comic Peter Kay, is one of those rare gems that few saw on first showing but that everyone was soon talking about. Wheelchair-bound Brian Potter (Kay) runs the Phoenix, a shabby social club populated by an assortment of wonderfully observed characters. It's grim up North and despite the best efforts of the staff to inject life into the proceedings--be it an alternative comedy night, a version of Robot Wars in Potter's beloved Pennine Suite or a Wild West extravaganza--each evening's entertainment always ends badly. Undaunted, the Phoenix denizens continue to strive for their dream: a world in which "clubland never dies".
Even though Kay is the focus of the show (having also directed and penned the series), this is no star vehicle; the hapless security guards, the club entertainer Jerry, and Ray Von the dodgy DJ all combine in an ensemble comedy the likes of which hasn't been seen since Fawlty Towers. You have to watch it a couple of times just to catch all the visual gags, let alone pick up on all the nuances of the brilliantly written script. If you missed it the first time round, now's your chance to own one of the best British sit-coms of recent years.

Love that Peter Kay deliberately keeps this off the TV so the quality isnt diluted by it being repeated infinitely. Every so often I’ll pop the DVD box set on and just die laughing. Truly was ahead of its time, this show.

I agree 100%, I laughed out load many times 😅😅😅 To me, it's the funniest thing that I have ever seen. I have it on DVD, and it still makes me howl ! 😅😅😅 I love the way the whole casts works so well together Peter Kay is SO clever and funny

He should have made another Max and Paddy, that was the worst decision they ever made it was the most popular of all the shows he made, but now it's too late they are both too old.

I like to think i've a great sense of humour, i mean Jim davidson, chubby brown, Bernard Manniing Gethrow, god rest them and some other greats no longer doing the rounds on our planet. but Peter Kay coouldn't raise a smile in me never mind a chuckle. i just didn't find the man funny. and a lot of his gags were just rehashes from originals, like telling an old joke we've heard hundreds of times told a different way. so no, wasn't a fan of his by any stretch. If i had a choice of 2 programmes to watch and be forced to pick between Kay or songs of praise? then heck, songs of praise would win out every time.

Old school comedy observation or otherwise is the finest there is where no holds barred woke or otherwise uncensored unscripted and able to roast every nationality under the sun.even if there are racial tones underscored That is pure comedy, but I will admit to being a racist MF, so yes, I find that style hilarious
