I’m a singing drummer and I just bought a Beta 56a because of my research here. Awesome!! One thing I did do, to lessen the proximity effect, is replace out the stock windscreen with a Beta 58 round style windscreen. This increases the distance from the element slightly and cuts down on P’s and B’s a bit (as this windscreen is more tailored for vocals). Makes it more like singing into a regular vocal mic. Thanks, Sweetwater!

If the drummer goes for a drum-fill/ complicated phrases his head would need to move away from the mic capsule to see where he's playing. So that's a no go for me. Also SNR ratio of the singer is very important to prevent feedback from monitors on stage. More signal from the singing as opposed to ambient noise feeding in to the mic. So the cleaner/ drier the signal, the better. So my consideration would only be Crown CM311 & Shure Beta 54. The DPA has good bass extension but in a live situation with a noisy environment, an engineer would use a High Pass Filter anyway.

I'm not a drummer (I can work well with machines) but, I am a lead vocalist who's ALWAYS interested in microphones of all types and brands and, how they sound in comparison situations. I liked this presentation a great deal! It also gave me a few surprises? The DPA 4088 gave me the biggest surprise of all but, all in all, I think they all performed admirably in this test and so, it's still a tough choice for anyone to make? I myself use a Shure WH20 XLR with an Alesis Miclink, in my act for when I need both hands free. The Alesis Miclink is a superb piece of kit for so little money and it's going to drive down prices in the wireless arena, for sure which, at the end of the day is a good thing for all of us! John A. Thank you Nick, very informative. I've used a Shure 58 on a gooseneck over the top of my head for decades. The form factor of the Beta 56 looks useful. Not being able to "work the mic" or get away from it to cough or curse the bass player will likely keep me away from the headset style.

To my ear the standout winners are the AKG C520, the DPA4088, and the Shure Beta 54. The Shure and the DPA seem to have a little less bleed through than the AKG. The Shure sounds almost (95%) as good as the DPA, so for the money, the Shure is the winner unless you just have the additional $429 laying around you don't need.

Wow! Thanks for this incredible video, Nick! It was so helpful. Our drummer is using a Crown CM-311a right now and we're getting TONS of bleed from his kit, and it's been murderous in our in-ears! I think we should try the Telefunken M80. That one seemed to have the best drumSound rejection and, as you rightly pointed out, allows the drummer to actively use mic technique to get their desired effect. I'm so glad you mentioned that bc that's actually a pretty big deal. As a singing guitarist, I know the benefit of being able to do that. And I think our drummer would love to have that control, as well. Last thing - your drumming on KG's "Shaming Of The True" was simply amazing. Thanks for everything you're doing at Sweetwater. You're the man!

Awesome video. And respect for having the guts to show us the vocals without reverb. A lot of people would cheat a little there. That really helps to hear the difference between the models. I'm definitely going for the Shure Beta 57A. The fact that you can't move the mic with a headset just makes the sound too static. Plus, because of my long hair, it's not practical. Anyone know what gooseneck model he's using?

Dynamic with the same setup is my personal preference but I will wear a headset if I have too. I do a lot of backing vocals when I play drums and I love supercardioid pattern mics for vocals. I use many microphones on my kit. Shure, Telefunken, Audio Technica and Sennheiser. The song sounds very Cirque D'Soliel. I know that Nick D'Virgillo worked there, great drummer and vocalist.

very good cool video demo, requiring your best in-depth hearing, lol. No matter how u slice it, there's "give and take", "gain and trade-off", "positive and negative" to absolutely everything and that's just how it is.. so "specifics" become the choices determined.. Wish a few more dynamic mics were in the demo too. They all have their unique "special qualities" desired for entire various details involved with the vocal, drum kit, and backing track combined. I hear a touch more mid range in a few mics that muddy up quality, and hear a bit of distance in a few others, plus a few of the mics would allow the backing track volume to be turned up a bit eventho the subject matter topic is mostly about drum bleed.. Think I like the Telefunken M80 short body the best for dynamic mic, technique, and cable as my top gear choice to check in to.. The AKG C520 is a top headset pick I'd choose 'cause it's very clean and mixes very well blended to all three vocal, kit, and backing track. I have the Crown CM 311A and have had to do some custom alterations on it. After hearing it in this demo, to me, it and the DPA 4088 and the Shure Beta 54 would all be great mics for distant background vocals or for use with special auxiliary sampled backing effect needs that I can almost hear in the track, but it's a quick guitar note that almost sounds like a quick sampled voiced word.. I'm really most impressed with the overall quality of the Audio-Technica ATM73. I'm a rock singing drummer and I'm going to have to get one of those Apollo 8P Quad interfaces. I like those drum mics being used and their functional directional abilities too..

Excellent work. I tried the Beta 56a because in this video the bleed is quite comparable to the Beta 54 headset. I’ve compared it to my AKG D7 and the drums sound better through that, with similar bleed. The 56a introduces a bit of snare drum ring which is a bit annoying. As Nick said, you can use any quality dynamic mic. Still looking for a headset but waiting for a sale. Thanks again for the great video.

Have any singing drummers tried the EV N96 ? (which is the current version of the older EV N/D967) I've read that it has the best off axis noise rejection, best for use on a very loud stage. And without a terrible proximity effect. Generally speaking, what mic has the best rejection from directly behind the mic? Dynamic mics are either cardioid or supercardioid, which both have some pickup from the rear. Why isn't there a mic that rejects the direct behind as well as it rejects the side noise?

do any of the headset mics happen to have a mute switch? just curious, would be nice not to have to depend on the sound engineer for that when not singing.

Hey, Aaron! Jose here from Sweetwater. Great question! Depending on if you are using a wireless pack or not, there are options that would have mute functionality. In my experience, there are some in-line switches that would do the trick as well, if you are using a wired microphone that does not have a built-in mute switch. I would love to speak with you more on this, so feel free to reach out to me directly at my details below. Thanks for the interest! I’m guessing you didn’t add a noise gate to the mics?

I am wondering if the hook parts that go over the ears, such as the AKG C 520, interfere with and make it uncomfortable when using in ears with the in ear cable going over the ear as well. How would it best be worn when using both?

I have a cardioide mic but its not good. Do you think the senneihser me-3 can just pick up the sound of my voice and not pick up the soind of my speakers. Thx

What if you cough or breath heavily, after a rapid fire drum fill. Is that an issue with headworn mics?

The comment about using a stand gooseneck vs a headset is very important if you are singing background vocal and lead vocal parts as I do. As far as drum bleed I think they were all pretty similar with the difference primarily how the kick is getting picked up between brands.. High frequencies seem to get picked up on all of them to one degree or another. IMO
