The Art Of Singing & Drumming | Josh Dion

Singing and drumming simultaneously is a topic that isn't often covered in the drum education realm. One person taking care of both the melody and rhythm isn't something that's usually done.
Thankfully Josh Dion, one of the best in the business at doing just this, came to Drumeo to share his wisdom on the topic. Josh is the definition of a "one man band". He plays drums, sings, AND plays keyboard all at the same time. Talk about killer independence.
In this lesson, Josh will teach you how to develop the skills to sing and drum at the same time with greater ease.

Totally unrecognized talent here. Josh proves that you don't have to have overly intricate chops to be a great musician and songwriter. He brings a complete bag; Groove pocket, catchy licks, and a great voice. Powerhouse.

It's definitely hard especially at first. I'm a drummer and I'm trying to learn to play and song "come down" by anderson paak. At first the singing threw the drums off but after a while it seems to help me stay on beat and know where the song is going next, cuz I use the vocals as a cue all the time, now I'm my own cue.

Really cool. The emotion in the singing can match exactly to the emotion in the drumming like this. This can’t be done with a separate drummer and singer!

Sure, it can. Points: A, you need a sober singer who LISTENS and B You need a sober drummer. That REALLY listens. C, you'll never find both, lol. Almost all the time, someone is beyond just slightly buzzed to where they are getting incapacitated. And NOBODY listens. This is why most covers SUCK. AND I prefer them because I like getting paid.

I’ve played drums for decades and just started singing lead. It takes me a good amount of effort to get the mechanics, especially when the lyrics don’t fall on the beat, but it’s so rewarding on a personal level. I’ve not heard of this man but he’s on a completely different level. Like Rainman.

Modern day one man band. His voice reminds me a bit of very early Steven Tyler, among others. It's like he had a band, kicked everyone out and said he was going to do it all by himself, and actually did it and the band said they agree to just leave. Great grooves, great voice. And such a fantastic music lesson, very helpful. It's a game changer for a drummer once you sing along, if not the whole thing, key parts of a song.

I've found that hearing all the different parts clearly is half the battle. As Gavin Harrison talked about in his Drumeo episode, it's really important to open your ears and hear the whole band when you're playing and not just focusing on your own playing. It's kinda the same thing when you're playing with all four limbs and singing at the same time, then you have five voices you have to be able to hear clearly just coming from yourself. The New Breed books by Gary Chester have really helped me with this, as well as taking every opportunity to sing backup vocals with bands I'm in, no matter how way out of my comfort zone it is :)

Thanks for the reply. I mentioned Phil Collins as he is my personal inspiration. He really had the lead singer position put on him as a result of having such a great voice to replace Peter G, I have seen him live and did not notice any tempo issues while playing. Perhaps Chester took over drum duty for visual appeal as Phil had medical issues which effected, now ended his drumming. There are many great singing drummers, I remember the Dave Clark Five in the early sixties and Levon Helm and Karen Carpenter ,both were sensational. I must say Rodger Taylor must score an honorable mention because he sings such great harmonies. Playing drums and singing harmonies is like threading a needle in the trenches in World War 1 during an all out attack ! Hey ,nearly forgot Buddy Miles and another personal favorite Richie Haywood with Little Feat. I will stop before I remember another .

I love his approach to playing, a lot of times drummers try to explain improvisation etc. by squeezing general ideas into small boxes(exercises etc), which sometimes destroys the concept of playing freely(but sometimes works well, don't get me wrong). Josh just picks rythms from his imaginations, which demonstrates what improvisation and personality in music is all about!
