The Art Of Singing & Drumming | Josh Dion
Singing and drumming simultaneously is a topic that isn't often covered in the drum education realm. One person taking care of both the melody and rhythm isn't something that's usually done.
Thankfully Josh Dion, one of the best in the business at doing just this, came to Drumeo to share his wisdom on the topic. Josh is the definition of a "one man band". He plays drums, sings, AND plays keyboard all at the same time. Talk about killer independence.
In this lesson, Josh will teach you how to develop the skills to sing and drum at the same time with greater ease.

Totally unrecognized talent here. Josh proves that you don't have to have overly intricate chops to be a great musician and songwriter. He brings a complete bag; Groove pocket, catchy licks, and a great voice. Powerhouse.

It's definitely hard especially at first. I'm a drummer and I'm trying to learn to play and song "come down" by anderson paak. At first the singing threw the drums off but after a while it seems to help me stay on beat and know where the song is going next, cuz I use the vocals as a cue all the time, now I'm my own cue.
His drums sound so pure and rich!! what a great mix. that snare just hits you in the chest!

I just bought a SECOND PA because it doesn't need subs on drums. I do both singing and drumming
Really cool. The emotion in the singing can match exactly to the emotion in the drumming like this. This can’t be done with a separate drummer and singer!

Euphegenia That’s actually a great point. I’m a drummer, and when I was needed to start singing at the same time, it was like learning the drums all over again. So much respect for this guy and what he can do.

Sure, it can. Points: A, you need a sober singer who LISTENS and B You need a sober drummer. That REALLY listens. C, you'll never find both, lol. Almost all the time, someone is beyond just slightly buzzed to where they are getting incapacitated. And NOBODY listens. This is why most covers SUCK. AND I prefer them because I like getting paid.

Pretty much true. Bernard Purdie told me this is why Phil Collins always has another drummer w him. He drops time when singing. Nobody mentions Karen Carpenter :(
What a talent. His original stuff is totally original too, blends a bunch of genres. Truly one of kind.
Wow! Words cannot explain the respect..... Fabulous talent!

One of our favorites!
I’ve played drums for decades and just started singing lead. It takes me a good amount of effort to get the mechanics, especially when the lyrics don’t fall on the beat, but it’s so rewarding on a personal level. I’ve not heard of this man but he’s on a completely different level. Like Rainman.
best Drumeo Lesson in my opinion.. Just love the guy!
I love Paris Monster! So happy you got Josh on drumeo!!!

This is the next level stuff, singing, drumming, keyboarding and flair.
So cool. Another good exercise, sing the bass line or guitar riff to a song while you play the drum part.
Very inspiring. Used to do backing vocals and this video encourages me to try it again :')
Love wide open kick sound too. Drums sounds killer. Great singing & key tones too

Modern day one man band. His voice reminds me a bit of very early Steven Tyler, among others. It's like he had a band, kicked everyone out and said he was going to do it all by himself, and actually did it and the band said they agree to just leave. Great grooves, great voice. And such a fantastic music lesson, very helpful. It's a game changer for a drummer once you sing along, if not the whole thing, key parts of a song.
This guy is amazing. super talented
I saw Josh at Ronnie Scott's with John Scofield. The highlight was Josh singing Black Muddy River. Made me cry. Amazing drummer/singer/musician
OMG about video end's performance ! If every humans on earth could give only 10% from the love of music this guy is giving to his song, on humanity, No more war for sure ! I love you Josh :)

This was a very interesting and informative lesson. Never heard him til now, definitely checking him out. I came away with a few things I’m going to focus in on my practice time,
YES - love this guy
I've found that hearing all the different parts clearly is half the battle. As Gavin Harrison talked about in his Drumeo episode, it's really important to open your ears and hear the whole band when you're playing and not just focusing on your own playing. It's kinda the same thing when you're playing with all four limbs and singing at the same time, then you have five voices you have to be able to hear clearly just coming from yourself. The New Breed books by Gary Chester have really helped me with this, as well as taking every opportunity to sing backup vocals with bands I'm in, no matter how way out of my comfort zone it is :)
Been hoping for a feature/lesson with this guy!...Thanks!
I have waited for this for so long!
i totally feel this 100% i LOVE the drums its been my main instrument since day 1 but i also have recently learned to love singing specifically songs like what incubus and simaler bands are putting out. to do both at the same time is hard but IF and when you can do it it is the most organic form of music making i can think of.
I love creativity, I've been doin diff stuff for 40 years w mixing instruments
Just played with this guy last night @ The Thirsty Hippo in Hattiesburg, MS! Cool dude, and Paris Monster is a sick band!
Yamaha and Evans omg what an amazing combo that everyone needs to try... Just missing those Zildjians =P
A TRUE ARTIST.... HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR HIM. 🤘🏻
Josh must be seen live. Just saw him on tour with The Darkness. He creates such an infectious vibe.
Some people got iT all !! Josh for sure !
Thanks for the reply. I mentioned Phil Collins as he is my personal inspiration. He really had the lead singer position put on him as a result of having such a great voice to replace Peter G, I have seen him live and did not notice any tempo issues while playing. Perhaps Chester took over drum duty for visual appeal as Phil had medical issues which effected, now ended his drumming. There are many great singing drummers, I remember the Dave Clark Five in the early sixties and Levon Helm and Karen Carpenter ,both were sensational. I must say Rodger Taylor must score an honorable mention because he sings such great harmonies. Playing drums and singing harmonies is like threading a needle in the trenches in World War 1 during an all out attack ! Hey ,nearly forgot Buddy Miles and another personal favorite Richie Haywood with Little Feat. I will stop before I remember another .
His tune A Vision Complete, as well as the others, reminds me of a Stevie Wonder type of vibe. Man this dude is talented. Love his music.

Josh should DEFINITELY write a book about the concept he was talking about at 26:40 (he said it hymself). I think working on this can take us a long way on improving our time and ability to express in the instrument, on having better things to offer as musicians and ultimately: getting gigs..
Real talent
This guy is incredible. Love his version of Neil Young's "Ride My Llama" from this.
I’ve always loved that he plays with his sticks backwards. I do that too but I do it with 2B oaks so they wont break so fast. I wonder if he resorted to playing backwards due to sticks breaking a lot.
This is great!
Saw these guys live. Much respect!

Awesome kick-drumming!
Very good.
that's raw talent right there
I can only recommend you to try it, even if you don't wanna do it on stage. But for practice it will totally link new synapses in your brain if you play and sing along, e. g. to songs you like. Try System of a Down for starters, it's a lot of fun!
Difficult to explain from time to time. Even more difficult to do. This guy knocks it out of the park tho! Makes a lot of sense what he talked about. I’m fairly decent at playing and singing at the same time. He done threw in a keyboard...... MIND BLOWN!

I love his approach to playing, a lot of times drummers try to explain improvisation etc. by squeezing general ideas into small boxes(exercises etc), which sometimes destroys the concept of playing freely(but sometimes works well, don't get me wrong). Josh just picks rythms from his imaginations, which demonstrates what improvisation and personality in music is all about!
