    I always find the hardest part of zombie apocalypses is the part where every military is totally wiped out by enemies with no armor no tactics and no range.

    It's more realistic than you think, given how few modern armies can operate without complex and delicate supply lines. A zombie outbreak in a major city, especially one that spreads rapidly and takes effect quickly, could easily disrupt the military enough to render it ineffective. The US military is more tech-dependent than many of our rivals, and so in some ways is _more_ vulnerable than others.

    Yeah but complex logistics are needed for mechanized armies with planes and tanks and all other stuff like radars and jet fuel. You don't really need all that against zombies, you just need some vehicles and infantry which really only need fuel which you can get almost anywhere, since it's diesel or gasoline.

  • @bcfb21

    WhiteKnight Leo I feel like you’re underselling most militaries. They wouldn’t run into a situation where they get swarmed. For starters supply lines would not be in danger as zombies can’t target them directly. Secondly zombies likely cant do a thing against an armored suv other than get ran over and killed. Lastly even if a zombie outbreak did happen and supply lines were in jeopardy a great deal of supplies can be airdropped in. Also helicopters with very large guns make short work of hordes.

    Whiteknightleo Fighting zombies is actually incredibly easy. Forget tanks, APCs, drones, attack helicopters. That's overkill. Just get common construction vehicles like bulldozers, weld steel bars over windows/windshields and then start mowing down the zombies. Its especially easy because they're attracted to noise and literally attack you with nothing but their decomposing bodies.

    Now imagine that same guy after about 30 seconds of obliterating zombies... spam in the can. Humans can only handle approximately 42 pounds of added weight (ie. armor, weapons, gear) before becoming encumbered and building toxic levels of lactic acid. This weight encumberance fact has been known since before the Peloponnesian War and continues to be taken into account in modern days. Also, with the ridiculous size and weight of all this extra useless metal, your medieval knight would be slower than death (see what I did there?) making him an overburdened, overheated non-moving tv dinner waiting to happen. As for me, give me a good pair of lightweight hiking boots, plenty of fresh-ish water, a lightweight ironwood club and a good sharp kilij and I will outlive a hundred of your knights, easily.

    there's one big weakness for the zombie in medieval time: the total population. the scary things about zombies are the fact it is dead and tend to be in extremely dense and numorous pack of individual. but in medieval time there were way less people per cities compared to knights who have to fight them. so yea it would probablies be easier to survive a zombie apocalipse in the medieval time and heck you may not enven know there's one because of the lack of propagation.

    I think this is an interesting argument that lower populations would make zombies irrelevant, however I don’t this this would always be the case. If we look at real world disease outbreaks, the Bubonic Plague killed tens of millions of people, due to an egregious lack of sanitation and far reaching commerce. Similarly, the Plague of Athens devastated the city of Athens due to the influx of refugees and people from the country side who sought shelter from the ongoing Peloponnesian War. In both these cases the population was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than it is today, but the diseases were able to kill scores of people due to a combination of external factors that played in favor of the diseases’ growth. I think it really depends if the Zombie Outbreak can spread through conventional means (e.g. airborne transmission, physical symptoms, livestock, etc.), because ultimately we know all too well how an ill prepared disease response will inevitably lead to large loss of life.

    I'm not well-versed in shotguns so forgive me here while I make a case against them. Certainly a slug and buck shot has some stopping power on humans and large animals and some to spare (and maybe bird shot as well at close range) but would this matter a ton for zombies that have a much lower density/are already in stages of rot? If the skin is tearing or even falling away already, doesn't that drastically reduce the stopping power compared to a dense and intact human body? Also I imagine, since muscle mass isnt that important to the zombie, if that slug/shot misses the upper spine or brain, you're still screwed when it's charging at you.

    James Bearden depends on what part of the brain needs to be destroyed though. A .22 LR CAN penetrate a skull, but that doesn't mean it would be able to consistently and effectively damage, say, the brain stem. Which, unlike the Walking Dead would tell you, should be the only necessary part of the brain for "undead" aka "fantasy zombies". Now, if we're talking about more of the 28 Days Later/L4D infected sort of zombies aka "sci-fi zombies" then that's a slightly different story. I could also get into the etymology of the word zombie itself and how the original meaning doesn't really make sense but Shad has covered that topic in a different video.

    ARX 351 The information I failed to include is that I have a bad back. While strong, I wouldn't be able to carry a whole lot of equipment. The crowbar is more for consolidation purposes (I'd add a leather grip). So the .22s would be powerful enough to do the job, light enough to reduce risk of throwing my back out and writhing on the ground while the zombies om nom my body. Plus, the bullets are tiny, so you can carry HUNDREDS of the things! Finally, .22s are much more common, and therefore so are the bullets. TLDR: I can't carry much. .22's are lighter.

"He was a good man." "How'd he die?" "Killed by a zombie." Entire bar breaks out in a fit of laughter, calling him a loser for going out that way. A group of warriors about to go into battle against a giant horde of zombies. "Hey Bill, look at that group over there. There's your abusive drunk father, your mother in law, those guys that dumped that debt on you, those shopkeepers that kept overcharging you, and those villagers that kept hassling you." "Dear lord, I thank you for this glorious opportunity to send those horrible people back to hell in pieces where they belong. A-men." Runs off to attack 50 zombies at once. "Should we help him?" "Nah, he can handle twice as many with ease, and he'll get mad if we interfere." "Yeah, besides there's more than enough to go around." "Hey, I got two half zombies on my back, trying to chew through my armour and I'm having a hard time getting them off. Can you help me out?" "Sure." Kills the zombies with ease. "Thank you." "No problem."

    No tanks are more like siege towers armed with ranged siege weapons, that are protected from all sides and move without exposing anyone to the zombies outside. Modern castles are forts, prisons and military bases. Straight flat High walls, electric chain link fences with spikes or razor wire on top. They are also often stocked with supplies like food, water and medical equipment and back up power supplies.

    It was enough ppl to spread the black death, multiple times in Eurasia - killing at least one-third (some say it might be two-thirds) of all people! In numbers that's 75 to 200 million (the estimated world pop is 450-500million ppl) A zombie outbreak would be much more devastating, considering there'd be almost no warning on how to handle one.

  • @Sleepy.Time.

    @Janice - True, I just think its the concept of modern cities full of zombies that makes it seem impossible to win against. As Shad said knights on armored horses could pretty easily clear village to village. A walled city full of zombies would become their own prison once the entrances are blocked from the outside.

  • @PauloGarcia-sp5ws

    @PauloGarcia-sp5ws

    6 жыл бұрын

    JaniceHope, that was mostly fleas though, not people spreading it. The black death was also eventually spread through the air, so no, I don't think zombies would be as bad as the black death, because the moment anyone realized something like that was going on they would kill the fuck out of it without thinking about it. And if that failed, they could simply hide in their castles. Not to mention, zombies spreading by sea is almost an impossible idea, especially because that's how the black death actually got into most of Europe in the first place. Also, depending on when the zombie plague started in the medieval period most people would probably have swords, or at least some type of close range weapon, like a bludgeon.

  • @kangirigungi

    @kangirigungi

    It depends on where you live. If you live in the USA, or somewhere near wilderness, you'd probably have easy access to a shotgun, which would probably the best small arms weapon against a zombie. But most parts of the world, acquiring firearms is not so easy. If you live in the countryside, you probably already have a woodcutting axe at home (contrary to fiction, chainsaws wouldn't be very effective against zombies), but in the city, the best you could do is a kitchen knife or maybe a prybar. In the medieval period, people weren't generally better armed than today, but as a higher portion of people lived in the countryside, more of them could have access to weaponizable farming implements such as a woodcutting axe or a scythe. Also, military presence was higher back then. Today, police has handguns which are practically useless against zombies, while a medieval city guard carried swords, which would probably be more useful in this case. There were also castles which could become safe havens in case of a zombie attack, and today we have none of these. Shad talked about cavalry charge. Which would be useful in open field, but not in an urban environment. Today, the same effect could be achieved with a few armored vehicles. But in an urban environment, things are much different. What makes the modern world more vulnerable is that, again, a higher portion of the people live in urban rnvironments. A modern army specifically trained for fighting zombies could probably be more effective than a medieval one, because things like grenades or heavy machine guns are able to dispatch zombies from a distance. But if they tried to fight them like other people, trying to shoot them with assault rifles, that may not be as effective as they think. On the other hand, a typical medieval soldier with a sword could be as effective against zombies as possible.

    Mathias Fraenkel, whilst medieval castles would need to be rebuilt, a castle is essentiely a fortified, military residence, often acting as a hub of political power. This doesn't need to be medieval, any modern building where the windows and doors on the bottom levels have been barricaded could act as a fairly functional, yet improvised castle.

Stopping power and overall damage. While your typical 9mm will zip right through a zombie no problem being rather ineffective other munitions like the 45 or a .357 will not only literally stop and drop the zombie but shatter limbs, joins, torso, ect. It's like a small cannon really.

    Great work as always Shad! I do think you missed a great ancient weapon that has range AND the stopping power to take out a zombie. The sling. While it takes a LOT of skill to use well, if you know what you’re doing you have a weapon that can crush a zombie skull at 100 feet and never really runs out of ammo. It’s also super lightweight and fairly easy to make if you have leather or cordage. Definitely one of my first picks for zombies!

    I watched a video (different channel) a bit ago after watching another Shadiversity vid on some kind of poleaxe or something and it was about a likely well used weapon that was not remembered or iconic and therefore only vaguely known in obscure documents. It was essentially a large butcher's knife on a long handle (looking like a long handled falchion or maybe a long bladed glaive?) which would perform much of the same kind of work as the Nodatchi or other horse cleaver would. Feel like that would also very much work as it's job was just to cleave through flesh and this video made me think of that.

    As Matt ScholarGladiatoria had said, a falchion is a weapon for "chopping up peasants" - so yes, I suppose it would be good against zombies.

    (22:00 , where you talked about medieval quarantines) It’s sad that quarantines where more respected in medieval times where people didn’t know about viruses than now, ducking plague doctors had very little knowledge about the plague but they wore (uncomfortable) masks and gloves, although for the bad reasons, they DID and instead of complaining, they thanked god for not being sick!

    Hey great video!!! I would be interesting to review the fight scene from the latest season of "the walking dead" where the characters are on a beach and use "tacktics" to fight the zombies with bows ,shields and spears. They form a shield wall to fight zombies.... and the immediately proceed to break up their formation :(
