#Kitcherie #khichdi #kichadi #kichadirecipe #kitchri
Kitcherie is the caribbean cousin, a descendant, a derivative of kichadi, the ayurvedic dish that detoxifies, heals, rejuvenates, improves immunity and energy It’s a recipe that was brought to Trinidad bythe indentured laborers who came to work in the sugar cane fields in the 1800’s. It has been adapted and has evolved based on the local ingredients and infused with Caribbean flavors. If you are used to the Traditional Indian version, I hope you enjoy this variation. This simple, protein packed one pot meal is not only healthy but delicious and hearty. My sister and I have personally struggled to make a kitcherie just like my mom’s so this video tutorial is for us as much as it is for you all. If you’d like to learn more, join me and my family in the kitchen as we learn mummy’s secret to making the best kitcherie we have ever eaten.
Moon dal has been replaced by split peas and spinach, high in vit a, c k1, iron and antioxidants has been added to make it more nutritious and filling.
I urge you to only use good quality olive oil in this recipe which is not traditional but much better for you than canola and vegetable oil.

Love kitcherie. My mom used to put sliced green plantains in it also. Delicious eaten with ghee and fried onions on top or butter. It is a very versatile dish, some people add dried hoori fish... wonderful. Great cooking from your Mom.

Oh gosh ladies..I love kitchree. I also drop in various things like bhaji..1 or 2 ochroes..pumpkin and particularly like to chunkay with whole geera at the end. When my father was alive I used to make a huge pot of plain kitchree with just split peas and white rice with a big bowl of roasted tomato choka..best food 👌👌🥰🥰
Aunty Jang! 😍😙
Love your pot where can I get one to buy
Oh my pumpkin rice!! Please do that one as well. Does it also have spinach?
Look ma making it, that is Bess.
It is very delicious with coconut milk
thank you ria (and your mom)for doing this recipe; I've always wanted to make but didn't knw how (sadly my granma never showed me her recipe)

Thanks for bringing back fun memories of my grandma’s cooking 🥘
I grew up eating so much of this dish that I hated it as an adult. However, one day I made it for my husband and it was one off my biggest mistakes cause he loves kitcherie now and I still hate it. I have to make this often now🤦♀️🤦♀️
I was brought up the same way I couldnt talk broken English either but now that my mom is elderly she speaks broken English. Go figure my brother an use to get in trouble for speaking it. Anyhow thank you for sharing this cause I only heard my dad talking about this b4 he passed away an I never knew how to make it. Now I can make it for mom. It looks delicious.

How sad your family weren't allowed to use the Trini vernacular. Love, love, love kitcharie. Never had it with spinach but it looks good.

I LOVE KHITCHERIE WITH COCONUT CHUTNEY OR TOMATOES CHOKA WITH SOME SHREDDED SALTFISH IN THE CHOKA I LOVE THE UNITY OF FAMILY.
The Spinach Kitchri looks Divinely Delicious, I normally make Kitchri just with Dal and the Rice, and then temper with Onions, red dried chillies, Cinnamon stick, Soamp (Fennel),Jeera, Bay Leaves in a mixture of oil and butter and add this, I serve it with a Yogurt gravy ( Khuri),Aloo Fry,Chili Braised Spinach, Chili Braised Pumpkin, Lemon Achar ( pickles), Papaar ( Papad/Papadom,and Bajia ( pakora) , lots of Love from South Africa., My Grandfather's were brought to South Africa in 1860 from India as Indentured Labourers... A Salute to our Forefathers that Toiled and Struggled to make a Better Life for us🇿🇦❤️🌹
Ria do a video on murtani
Thank you for all your beautiful dishes n it's so beautiful seeing you n your family cook... your floats, pholourie n now I'm going to try this... 1. Can we use brown rice instead jasmine 2. Do we have to soak the peas overnight to cook it
@CookingWithRia
2 жыл бұрын
Brown rice may require lots more water and longer cooking time-- and split peas does not require soaking. Thanks.
Wow that looks delicious 😋 love your beautiful voice your mom is great cook enjoy be safe 😊👍🤎🇨🇦
Simple means very peaceful
Hi this looks good. But while you were talking to someone your mom or aunt poured a first cup of water in and I don't think you saw. It looked kind of yellowish so I was wondering if it was the split peas water and not regular water d first time around?
Hi What kind of pot is that, that the kitcherie is cooked in Where can it be bought, online because I'm in trini dont know if I can get it here By the way, your voice is like a tv or radio person, lovely, thankyou
Mmmmm dats u way in kitcherie for who dont know to cook this. But not d real kitcherie.
Hello, is that Indra? Oh my gosh!!!! I hope so. If so, Indra it’s Winona!!! From Sloan-Kettering. Yes Indra, hi!! We have to connect.
Love Aunty Jang! amen! 🌹🙏🏼
Oa Indian dish Khichdi
A lot of Caribbean parents are like that..no broken English.. you better do it in secret 🤫
Thank you very much indeed for sharing such well kept secrets. I always put the tumeric powder after I add the water. I never use Cummin. Now I have the right recipe. I am very grateful and thankful for this video.
Aldoh many might say its Trinidad dishes. It's still kinda strange to see Indian Christians making these dishes bc of the cultural differences in our hindu and Christian religion, bc Indian food and wear and dance etc..the whole culture is based on the hindu belief of our forefathers. Nevertheless I enjoyed this vlog. Kitcherie looks great and the lime I enjoyed watching u all together..I always wondered how ria spoke deep English, now I know..I like our broken trini English doh..is we ting and I tink a bowling alley might not do well in Trinidad bc it's not we thing, our culture different but then again trini's love to follow everything the states does,so it might do well..
Please put a power tap button because this is soooooooooo healthy.
Hey you forgot to put in the coconut cream in the written recipe 😋

The kitree looks delicious, but that’s not the normal way to make it, that’s more like a bagie rice not kitchree!
