Best Hunting Rifle For Deer
One of our Patreon Members requested information on what rifle they should get for deer season. So, I pulled together this video with information on different styles of rifles and cartridges to help new hunters get started.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

@timm.6391

@@Mustafa-dm5co Not to bad unless you get the short mag, those are costly to shoot, and not a big benefit....270 already a loud rifle.... the short mag with more loud crack in the shot, more recoil... doesn't give a whole lot of extra help for the extra cons.... if course more ex I expensive. I love the flat trajectory of the standard 270... but they are a loud rifle. And actually for most areas in the states, a 223/5.56 is just fine for typical game, still a bit loud for size, but again has a pretty flat trajectory for accuracy.... and good energy for the size.
The 1914 Enfield in 30-06 was actually more plentiful on the battlefield for American troops in WW1 than the Springfield. Arguably the better rifle, too.
Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzread.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.
My dad swore by his Model 94 30/30. He brought home literally dozens of elk and deer over the years, and even a black bear.
At 70 yrs. old I really enjoy your approach to explaining rifle choices. Very very interesting and your voice is a keeper. Thanks for a great channel and great topics.
The best deer gun is the one you own, are comfortable with, and shoot well. Chambering isn't that important as long as it's adequate for deer sized game.

Last year I had a great one-shot stop on a big Deere with my Henry lever-action. The problems only started after the farmer climbed out of it.
The .300 Savage model 99 is the best woods gun for whitetail. It is the .30-30 with a rotary magazine so it uses spitzer bullets. Flatter shooting cartridges may be better for farms and plains.
Geez Ron, You covered allot information...I am impressed with the running dialogue without slips of the tongue or video editing, for those of us with KZread channels...Thanks for including the AR/MSR platforms.
Well, in the 2020 season I used my old Rem 700 ADL in 7mm Mag. Been carrying it for 44 years. I fired 4 shots and put 4 deer, 2 bucks and 2 does, into the freezer. I guess I'll stick with it.

yeah, especially when you can get one any day of the week that looks like it's hardly been fired, already has a great sling and scope that just needs a little tweaking to fit you all for $700
You may have touched on the subject but the carbine lever action rifle chamberd in 357 or 44 magnum or even 45 long colt can also fill the freezer and not cause you to buy another type of ammo if you already shoot revolvers. And by the way some hunters like to carry both a revolver and a rifle without having to carry two different cartridges. Best video I've seen on the subject.👍

Grandpas 300 savage,Sears roebuck,1921I believe she was 30 dollars ,full months pay for gramps. Dad got her when he was 12,,as did I.over 3 generations she has taken hundreds of whitetails with probably less than 20 rounds ever wasted as we've always been too poor to waste ammo, plus by tradition you got your shirtail cut off if you missed a buck in deer camp. Things were different then.
Guess I'm showin my age -- but my go to's are Win 70s Ruger 77's -- polished blue steel & walnut. IF I get caught in weather-- at the end of the hunt / break down the rifle- dry it out and oil em up. All an enjoyable labor of LOVE ! part of the experience 😊
Mr. Spomer. If anyone should watch any video before purchasing a gun for North America, they should watch this one!
I absolutely love Ron Spomer.. lays the facts out for you. One hell of a hunter and conservationist.
Right now, the T/C Compass is going for $249 with a $50 mail in rebate. It is a basic rifle that I have had a great time with.
Okay, I have to pause the video to say that dog is adorable. English Setters are always pretty and yours in no exception.
I lean toward my faithful old Savage Model 99 in .250-3000 for those times when a .243 or .270 would make other folks happy and my newer Savage Model 99 in .308 for those longer shots. To be honest though, I have seen, handled, and fired, a couple of bolt action rifles I could be talked into that were chambered in .30-06 and 7mm Magnum. But then all my centerfire hunting rifles are lever guns. I think I'll stick with what I got.
Love this Ron! Thanks for shooting this!

Thanks Ron! That's some great info !👍
Thank you Ron . Excellent info
For someone whose gonna have just 1 rifle, it's hard to beat a 30-06. You can use 150 grain for deer or pronghorn, and get plenty of range, but keep the recoil down some, or go with a 180 grain for Elk, and then go 220 grain for Moose or bear, or even African game. It's just a good ole all-arounder. Plenty of good other cartridges out there, but the ole 30-06 is hard to beat.
In Kentucky, we don't have the wide open plains like they do in Montana or other western states. If I'm hunting in brushy areas, I still use the old faithful 30-30 lever gun. My (circa 1980) Marlin 336C has put a lot of meat in the freezer. But if I'm out of the bush, in more open areas, a good Remington 700 in the 308 flavor works tremendously. Either way, I'm a sucker for blued metal and wood. I enjoyed the video. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.👍
As always Ron summarizes the subject at hand excellent!

One of the best deer rifle recommendation pieces I've ever seen/read...and I've seen a lot since I began reading every hunting magazine I could get my hands on back in 1975.
The 6MM Remington is the 7X57 necked down to 6MM or .243. I have a 6mm Reminton, and a .257 Roberts Ackley Improved. I also have a 7X57 Mauser, too.

I've been looking for this video since I first started looking into hunting a few months ago when meat was scarce. This was brilliant! Thank you so much for putting all this info in one place. 10/10!
Thanks Ron! I subscribed right away. I love all the information and details with a very nice presentation. Luckily I got some great advice on my first deer gun more than 30 years ago. It’s a stainless Browning 30-06 A-Bolt rifle and it’s been a very good gun and very much like what you are suggesting here. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos soon.
Great overview, Ron, and great advice.
That was an excellent overview. I learned a lot. Thank you.
Great long-form video Ron. Even though I've been shooting for years this was enjoyable. All reasonable advice too.
Thank You Ron for the GREAT video. It is the most informative video I have watched all year long. I learned a lot.
For me, the biggest con with most of these deer rifles is that I miss.
Outstanding video! 10 out of 10 my friend! Passing knowledge on down the line. Nice rifles! Keep'em coming!
Gotta say, Spomer, this is the best video of yours I’ve seen. Pretty much covered it all, and no drifting off into the weeds like so many do now. A+++
I guess I will stick with my Savage model 99 in .300 Savage. I have carried this rifle with me for a while now. It was my grandpas gun he got it in 1941. I have been using it since I was 16 and I am 68 now. Have put many deer down with it and it has never failed me yet. May have to go with one of my scoped guns, maybe .350 legend in the AR platform because my eyes aren’t the same as they used to be and the 99 doesn’t have a scope.
Great video to narrow down options for the first time buyer! Appreciate the specific recommendations.
30-06 still the best cartridge 🙃🤣

30-06 can easily get it done. I wouldn’t want to shoot anything much smaller then a 70lb deer with it though. I don’t have the biggest selection with a .270, .243 and the near parallel .308 plus rim fire stuff and lever guns so my go to would be .243 because the gun not particularly the caliber, (I “feels” right and carries well) but if they are big deer, (I’m in the Pacific NW so we have tiny deer plus some pretty big Mules as well) I’d grab the .308 so basically yup, 30-06 essentially.

Listening to an expert talk about something as nuanced and diverse as firearms is really fascinating. This video is packed with data backed up with real world and back country experience that I really appreciate. Really happy I stumbled across this channel. Hopefully will get my hands on a bolt-action .308 one of these days.
You are wonderfully clear and well-organized, and yet thorough too. Thanks.
I came in here expecting some inaccuracies and mistakes like most people make. So far, you’re nailing it! You speak from a wide and deep knowledge base without needing notes, which is very refreshing. You also don’t say, “Uh, uh, and, and, uh...” Very well-spoken and informed shooter/hunter. My grandpa loved the .257 Roberts, re-barreled an Arisaka in it, sporterized. For bolt guns, the SAKO Vixen-type actions like the Howa Mini or the CZ527 chambered in 6.5 Grendel really offer an excellent low-recoil, lightweight, minimal muzzle blast option. Another lesser-known option with the AR-15 is the WSSM line of cartridges. A few companies build AR-15s chambered in .243 WSSM and .25 WSSM, but you really can’t go wrong with 6.5 Grendel as mentioned. I’ve been shooting 6.5 Grendel since 2009 now, and it grew on me fast.
Great content.

Very well done. Thanks.
First time that I have tuned in to your channel and I must say that you are quite knowledgeable about hunting and guns.
Ron, as a long time rifle fan, I say this primmer on deer rifles is the best I have heard in years. We all know your experiences and I appreciate your opinion on getting somebody started afield. New hunters really need to focus on woodsmanship. Get one of these rifles recommended here, good waterproof boots, and sometime shooting your new rifle and you would be good to go. New people in the woods should be assured of operating their weapon with confidence and safety. Practice being safe so it’s not new to you early Saturday morning of your hunt.
Where I'm at, we have a lot of Moose and Black Bear so having something with a little extra power and being able to Shoot through some light brush is good. The 444 Marlin is hugely underrated and like the Leveraction you showed it can reach out quite a ways. The 265 gr Leverevoution loads from Hornady is excellent. They are the only pointed bullets that can be used safely in a tubular mag. But I also love my 450 Bushmaster and 243 Win. All about where I'm at and what I want to carry
