The thing about the Flip Grip is that it's just a $12 plastic shell that doesn't have the connectors necessary to allow wired joycon. I personally use flip grip with the animal crossing-colored Binbok controllers (link below) which are wireless like the 1st party joycons. The dpad is a slight bit more spongy than the hori, but I find it accurate at least. I have seen people mod the Binbok dpad too. Oh and be aware there are at least two Binbok models out there. I use the fatter ones. I've heard the dpads function a bit differently among models Regarding the split pad pro vs the single hori dpad joycon, I would recommend to everyone to just buy the split pad pro first, then consider the single joycon if the split pad feels too big to comfortably reach the dpad like you mentioned. My hands are bigger so the dpad placement feels just right for myself, while the single joycon is decent but has the same poor ergonomics as original joycons and cramp my hands. So ymmv. Also, I see a person or two mentioning the small screen on Mushi in TATE. They need to be made aware to adjust the screen zoom to 150% in the in-game options under Screen. actually got my first 1cc ever on mushi on the switch just yesterday (on novice mode hehe). i played with the joycon analog and i thought it worked kinda nice? it has a very small travel distance so i thought it worked ok, better than a regular analog stick on the pro-controller for example. I could get fairly precise diagonal movement which i find kinda hard to get when I play with a d-pad. maybe that's just a lack of practice? as for the buttons, I mapped the focus shot to the ZL button so my right hand wouldn't get too cramped

Thank you for the video and putting your hands and eyes through such perils for us, the people! I'm thinking about getting the L Hori joycon suggested because I handheld so much, but the thought struck me, aren't analog sticks better than d pads for shmups? I know you're an arcade stick guy through and through, but why go for a better dpad than a better analog on the left? The right joycon is a must buy. I play 15 minutes of Musha and holding two Switch buttons down at the same time is like tossing and turning on a bed of nails.

Nice vid! I have the Flip Grip, Hori Zelda joycon and split pad, and modded original joycon with d-pad, but rarely use any of them lol. I normally just leave my Switch docked and hooked up to a PC monitor that’s rotatable for tate mode while using an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro or the official Nintendo snes Bluetooth pad.

I was really hyped for the flip grip. Bought the left Hori pad and was ready to play some shmups in Tate. When I realized you can’t use the Hori pad I was so disappointed. The flip grip is basically useless without proper controls! Now I only play horizontal shmups in handheld.

i love the little lever on your dpad hahah, for the switch i use a padhacked hitbox to play on docked mode, im waiting to get a flipgrip to try it handheld

So happy I've came to the same conclusion as you. I bought a flip grip but still to this day there aren't any aftermarket joycons that have a battery and have a dpad that can compete with the hori L side dpad. So I say this video still holds up very well.

What's your opinion on the dpad and buttons on the COIORVIS joycons? They have Bluetooth capability, but I'm hesitant about the pad and buttons as well as the Bluetooth lag.

Flip grip also forces the joycons to be in bluetooth mode which has more input lag then when they arw actually connected to the switch.

I play all my schmup games on Steam and other genres generally on my x-box. Which is the best controller with a usb plug I can use on my laptop. Joysticks are a bit big cos I play late at night in bed quite often.

It is separate from the console, but I find having the screen in a stand on a table in tate mode, while uskng a Nintendo Online SNES controller works best for me.

What I was just doing with my Chinese handheld running Final Burn was playing in Tate mode using the right analog stick as the dpad and that actually works pretty well. I think the same thing would be fine with the Switch if games left you configure it that way.

I was literally looking into this then you drop this video Lmao. Recently got Mushi on switch and getting Espgaluda 2 as well :).

ha yeah, i actually have a trick of zooming in a bit on the mushi port, where the bomb display and player points are mostly cut off, but gives you a tiny bit extra size

Great video. I’ll be finally grabbing my first Nintendo Switch ( OLED). Unfortunately the flip grip isn’t compatible so I purchased this 3D printed vertical controller mount for my 8Bitdo Pro 2. I also purchased the Hori play stand. Hope that will suffice for now lol.

I got a Flip Grip along with a Dpad Case mod. Turns out I barely use both. I SWITCH around playing non-tate games frequently and the dpad on the case mod is a bit too flat. That Hori Dpad-Con may feel mushy but has been amazing for any genre. Best of all it hasn't drifted.

exactly! and I don't mind a little give in my dpads tbh, the really clicky stiff ones don't have as much feel, at least for me.

So, I gave the Hori/SPP config a try awhile ago. I just can't get comfortable with it. I feel like I don't have nearly enough grip on the left side, and the dpad feels off a bit. That could just be my unit though. I vastly prefer the dpad on the left SPP controller. But my Shmup setup is propping the Switch Tablet up on a tablet holder in TATE and connecting an 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2. Extremely comfortable and responsive Dpad, great buttons and triggers, all configurable. You lost a bit of the handheld aspect, although it's still quite portable. Much more comfortable than the alternatives though, in my opinion.

yeah playing propped up opens up a lot of great options (like wireless arcade stick). For me though I end up finding that I just need a really strong pick up and play handheld solution because if I am able to play propped up then I usually can just go all the way and play on my CRT console/pc setup ha.

The combo left Hori joy con and Satisfye grip may be a slight improvement on your suggested setup. It is a very tight fit but it works!

Mark the Esywen joycon sold on Amazon works with the flipgrip and has Bluetooth and turbo macros. The thumbsticks are larger than OEM, and the controller in general is a good bit larger than stock, not as large as Hori though. Play shmups that way on my Switch. I don't notice any lag, but ymmv.

I have not tried it yet but there are super cheap mounts to put on your Switch Pro-controller and some of them feature tate mode too.

A couple of thoughts since I'm actually really interested in this topic: - There are actually a bunch of third party joycons that work wirelessly, and are ergonomically-shaped as compared to the Nintendo ones. One that comes to mind is the Binbok joycon sold on Amazon, but there are certainly more that I've seen reviewed by Spawnwave and others. However, I haven't used them personally, and reviews of them specifically call out the d-pads as mediocre, so I've hesitated in investing in them. Might be worth investigating with your Patreon bucks though, perhaps? ;) - There's a Sega Saturn d-pad mod out there that I've seen that I've wanted to try out for a while now. The Saturn's d-pad uses an inner smaller d-pad that actually matches up with the Switch's button microswitches. The only downsides are that you'd need to cannibalize a Saturn controller for the d-pad (or maybe one of the Retrobit replicas, although I have issues with those personally) and a OEM joycon, and optionally a third party shell if you don't want to dremel a hole through the OEM shell. I'm curious how the travel with the d-pad would feel, since that's my main complaint with those shell mods that you pointed out in your video. Maybe a big, beefy floating dpad would help? - Taken together, I'm curious how mixing a Saturn d-pad modded joycon with one of the third-party wireless joycons on the right with the Flip Grip would hold up. Would theoretically allow ergonomic grip similar to the Split Pad Pro on the right, with an awesome d-pad on the left.

The Saturn dpad sounds like a cool idea but the mod might have an issue where there needs to be a deep pivot point for the pad which is not on the board. Maybe you drill one in or something? This does sound interesting I ll look into it :-)

Yeah, there's like an endless sea of chinese joycons on amazon and whatnot. Personally I'm really happy with the Kinvoca C25; it's more ergonomic than the OEM joycons, and the dpad is quite serviceable. It's stiff and clicky like a 3ds dpad, with a strong pivot to prevent you from pushing in the whole thing at once. Don't bother with the binbok, the dpad is hot garbage.

So for flip grip I don’t use normal joycons I use tutuo joycons on Amazon. They have normal analog sticks so if you play anything aside from shmups that’s good and a d pad. Now I like the dpad but I can see people not liking it’s tactile like feel. They’re wireless so maybe you’ll enjoy it using flip grip? Just keep in mind since it’s not a 1 to 1 joycon it’s a little loose on the flip grip it’s not locking onto it, but I’ve played on the flip grip using them so much I rarely ever drop the switch or whatever using it, only if I like jump out of rage from dying at a boss I did do that.

i use them too for the normal analog. Pretty smooth and quick back to neutral that i like. Actually they have convinced me so much i took 3 pairs of them, so much better than OG joycons.

I feel like the Binbok, which is very comparable to the Hori Split Pad Pro and a flip grip (or 3D printed alternative) seems like an ideal solution

The switch is pretty great for horizontal shmups. Unfortunately, I'm like you and play 99% of the time in handheld and my favorite shmup style is vertical. Shmupping for ants.

Thought of another way! The NES controller attached to the switch rotated the d pad so you could technically put that on the left and a normal joycon on the right. Doesn’t quite work for flip grip but the d pad is higher up with flipped nes controller. They’re on sale and bought a pair, only reason I’m commenting now lol

I literally have the Zelda left joy con for the Dpad, and the hori split for the extra grip, but never mixed them🤔. I'd recently been using a knockoff brand (Binbok or something) that has the added grips for comfort, with the FlipGrip, but of course the Dpad on those is super stiff, so I just end up using the analog stick anyway. I can't win lol!

@@TheElectricUnderground it feels good to me, though I've never tried the japanese one, so unfortunately I don't have the frame of reference to say it's as good. Like you mentioned, it doesn't work with the FlipGrip so I end up using it horizontal with a grip case. These companies are making bank off me with all these accessories, lol.

I have Hori Zelda D-Pad, euro version and I am satisfied with it. They are the same whaever the region I guess.

Great video dude, I'm curious to try out the Hori Pro pad now. I have the Hori Dpad Joycon and find it quite good except for the cheaper feeling materials over all. But I do find it uncomfortable to use. The Dpad is just too low, and when also trying to hold up the switch I cant seem to rest my thumb on it in a way that feels right. Also, if your playing a game that needs the shoulder buttons aswell, you have to use a sort of claw grip. I dont understand why Hori's "D-Pad controller" doesnt have the Dpad in the primary control position where the left analog stick is. Really, this controller should not even have an analog stick. Interestingly the 3DS uses the same control layout with the dpad below the analog slider, but because the 3DS is quite a bit smaller, and the console rests flat in your hands because the top screen tilts towards your face, it doesnt feel uncomfortable to me. Just some random ramblings. Why cant things be made perfectly to fit my tastes??? XD

Yeah the d pad is a little low for sure. One nice thing about pairing it with the split pad on the right is that you can use the split pad to hold the switch and take most of the weight

Very very difficult, you d need to build some sort of proprietary plug and then figure a way to connect the plug to your Joycon while they are on the flip grip

@@TheElectricUnderground Yea, if the flip grip stops you plugging in a joycon then I can see it being hard. if you could plug in an expendable joycon it would just be a case of wiring one to the other. ..Maybe just wire up some joycons and make your own flip grip out of sticky tape?

I use the Hori D-Pad Joycon (L) and the Satisfye grip. I have a much better experience now

I have a Lite and it’s really not bad handheld, especially hori. For tate I put the switch on a cell phone stand vertically and use the arcade stick or controller. Or just play on pc 😆

Was about to buy a FlipGrip, but damn I didn't realize that you could only get the default Switch joycons (or "shitcons", as I and many others like to call them) to work on them. That is a massive dealbreaker for me. I'm gonna hold off on a purchase until they come up with a modified version that allows non-official Switch joycons (like the Hori Split Pad Pro) to be attached to them.

I'm fairly new to trying to do better with Shmups and i always play HH myself. I use a split pad pro - which i love to use while i learn. I can sometimes 1cc Dodonpachi Resurrection on Novice so slowly building my chops. There are cases you can get if you want to take it out with these cons. I may well look into getting a good entry level stick soon just to give me a chance to go for that next level. Thanks Mark. ♥️

Pintendo (look on Etsy) is a heavier duty flip-grip that works better with the OLED switch and with the addition of the Nyxi (Hyperion) joycon setup = much more pleasurable tate setup for me.

The switch lite has a much better dpad and better buttons overall than the dockable switch. Greatly prefer using my lite since I play almost only in handheld mode but I know that really isn't an option for people who want the option to record footage on a tv. Just a better build overall since it doesn't have that slight disconnect on both sides that the slide on/off joycons can have.

@@TheElectricUnderground It's only about 30 mins more than the original launch switch so it doesn't quite compare to those newer ones with the better battery. If you get a chance to try one in person It's worth testing out the controls for sure.

I love my flip grip but I would kill for a first party DPAD!! Why is it so hard for Nintendo to make a left side joy con with a damn DPAD on it??!! I have the Hori but I’d like one I can use on the FLIP GRIP!!! Edit: I wrote this before I heard you say the same thing. Damnit Nintendo. We need a REAL DPAD JOYCON.

You just need to use the in-game zoom on mushi and keep the aspect ratio intact. It should definitely be much much larger than playing in landscape

@@TheElectricUnderground yeah it you print something like that switch hack thingy that might be oké for the contacts. But you will still need a rail for the joycon to attach. If you could find a broken switch, then you might be able to remove it from that. But yeah quite some work and mad soldering skills required 😋

ah I dont think the thumbsticks are that bad. If u bind the shot and focus to the triggers and the bomb to a or something ur hands wont cramp up as much using the flip grip

The best for me was picking up a screen to pro controller grip mount. Play it in widescreen, play in tate, 20ish bucks and no messing around swapping out joycons. Only downside is it’s not very portable and the couple lost frames.

@@TheElectricUnderground Def doesnt have the best dpad for sure. Stick guy myself. Unfortunately I don’t think they make a clip mount to fit the fight commander. They make them for most if not all the first party controllers, but not so much for third party ones.

I'm a simple person. I use an 8Bitdo Zero 2 and set my Switch on a Compact Stand when out and about. I'm also a masochist, but I repeat myself.

What a shame Hori did not use their better dpad on the Split Pad Pro. That's a really stupid issue.

The other problem with the flip grip is that joycons are noticably more laggy when playing disconnected from the switch than when they are connected. #SplitPadProGang
