First time owners with aggressive breeds are the WORST. They make bad neighbors but they're also bad for their own dog. Thank you for this PSA.

I wouldn't have thought there was actually a difference in dogs til I got a mixed "extreme" breed. A whole new world of dog! And she's precious and has a lot of human friends. A big eye opener, though.

I wouldn't say that there are "aggressive" breeds. Harder to train ones, yes, but aggressive depends on the owner and training received

@@kimbrolyy Animals have instinctive behaviors or what ethologists call "fixed action patterns". Baby deer are born knowing how to coordinate their legs well-enough to walk. The people who sell ant farms don't hold training sessions for the ants to make sure they know how to dig tunnels. Try watching some wolf behavior videos. They're definitely more wild than domesticated dogs. ...and some breeds of dogs are more domesticated than others.

My mother had a Great Dane who thought it was a lap dog ( not at 200 lbs). Extremely deep bark, but friendly as hell. One night, my parents got into an argument, and my father pointed at her and said, " And I'll tell you....!" He never finished the sentence because the dog had his whole shoulder in his mouth pulling him away. They never argued in front of him again.

Our first family dog when I was a little kid was a big German shepherd. Any noise out in the garden or a knock at the door she would bark super loud and sound mad scary but sit at the end of the hall when who was at the door is let in to see them, wouldn't hurt a fly. I honestly think if anyone was ever out there looking to break in and she heard them before us they would have turned back in an instant and she made me feel very safe growing up. She lived to 12 years old before cancer did what it usually does. Rest in peace to my best childhood friend. I cherish every moment I spent growing up with you (:

@@Allanwify you were lucky. Rotties are known to be hyperactive dogs that are pretty difficult to train. My mum used to have bull terriers when I was a kid, when we moved out she got a rottie for her English to play with and it was hard, she had to get a trainer in and she was great with dogs, had them for decades and had harder dogs to train, including a few rescues, I never thought about it before but I realised then the rottie owners I knew weren’t training their dogs, they just had extremely hyper children they thought they were in control of be cause they sat on command. They aren’t great dogs for first time owners,, you got lucky and most assume they’ve done what they haven’t done and it’s a shame for the dog.

@@astridmaack4516 they aren’t great at all for first time owners. Some people just get lucky and others think they have a trained dog because they sit. I’ve not seen many trained rotties, just super hyper dogs that people enable. You get a lot of struggles with training them toilet wise because of this as well, when my mum was having hers trained properly the trainer said this is because people don’t train the giddiness out of them so they can’t handle themselves as well. He hit the nail on the head though. A girl will be a little easier but they’re not first dogs. It’s not fair on the dogs, they deserve better than someone who believes they can handle it.

For example a soft temperament Rottie is a lot scarier looking than a working line Giant Schnauzer, but they are also much more suitable as a family pet

THANK YOU for this post. I also can't say enough good things about all black dogs that aren't intimidating but have a big bark! My black Lab barks deeply on cue and we may even be doing protection sports. She's the friendliest thing ever, but, she is VERY TRAINABLE and knows to bark (in her mind, for fun) when people come to the door, or when I ask her to! Many people are scared of black dogs that are displaying intimidating behaviors, even if they're friendly breeds/dogs. Labs are VERY TRAINABLE and are likely to not develop reactivity just because they're taught to bark at strangers on property! My girl sees it as a game and has never had aggression issues. ❤

I have a chihuahua sheltie mix, very small dog, and my god, he has a deeper bark than a lot of bigger dogs, and of course he's very vocal and barky, and also super territorial (though not actually all that aggressive). So of course we never get any burglars even though we are definitely in a very dangerous part of town where burglaries are super common, because as soon as he hears a minor knock, sees a stranger on our porch, hears someone talking outside a window or door, he goes apeshit and starts barking up a storm. The funniest thing is when someone that knows him knocks on the door, in response to his barking they start baby talking at him, which makes him excited and start barking even MORE.

Our chocolate Labrador was like a big brown bear and had an amazing deep thunderous bark. Leave the hall door open and he would run and bound up to the door, hitting the door with a thud, barking at whoever had knocked at the door. Scary as hell, but if you put your hand through the letter box, he would lick your fingers 😂

My grandmother has a black lab crossed with a rottweiler called prince. He looks just like small Labrador and has a lovely soft temperament but whenever there's someone coming down her driveway he barks like a much larger dog. He's perfect for her. He only ever barks when someone is outside other than that he's quite happy sitting quietly all day. You wouldn't be able to tell he had any rottweiler in him until he barks except for maybe a slightly thicker neck than most labs but he's actually a little smaller than most Labradors. My favourite breed is probably Labrador and then german shepherd. I had both and I'd say the German shepherd is an excellent guard dog but they're not the easiest dog and they're very intelligent so mine used to play tricks on me sometimes and test you, not a problem I've ever had with labs. I'd stay away from bulldogs in general if you aren't experienced just because they can do a lot of damage. I'd feel far more comfortable with a German shepherd around kids than any kind of bully but even labradors can be dangerous if you don't train them properly.

All farms here around me have Jack Russels as a first warning and something bigger for the second line of ‘defense’. Our Swiss white shepherd does a great job too. She alerts us and just stands there like a white ghost and at every window you’ll get greeted by this stare and look; what are you doing here? And her bark sounds like she’s a 120 pounds, so that helps. No burglar in their right mind would come in.

We had a rescue chow chow lab mix. BEST family dog. The lab gave her an even, docile temperament but the chow in her made her reserved, observant, and a feirce guardian. She would never bite or hurt a fly but could put on a show to scare anybody. Once the mailman walked into the yard and she did tight circles around him, hackles raised, barking, teeth out. But the mailman had so much experience he knew she wouldnt bite and would calmly carry on. She never ever touched him but tried to guard the yard all the same if she was out when he came. Rip BB.

The type of guarding is important. My family has had labradors and Doberman pinschers for the last 40 years (I know, its a weird pairing). Labs can be intimidating when they have high bark and prey drive. Dobermans are terrible if you want to stop someone from getting into the house. They'll let just about anyone into the house or yard, no problem. They might even open the door for them if they were particularly raptor-like. But once that person is in the house, they will not get out.

She also is a barker, and if someone unknown is at the door she won't stop barking even though we say "Sofie stop". She isn't a biter though, she just has a powerful bark that is very intimidating. Ultimately though, she is just a little cuddle bug that is very territorial and protective.

We used to live in the thick of a forest in France. This area attracted a lot of burglars because there were small châteaux scattered just about everywhere there. We had a Newfoundland that would circle visitors’cars, not barking, just « looking « … Strangers either waited for us to come and tell Sonate it was ok, or if they had no real business being on our property just drove away. I never felt the urge to lock my door. I have now lived in town for the past 6 years. My little house feels very exposed, but I haven’t been burgled yet. I guess I can thank my chihuahua pack. Passers-by can hear their hysterical barking behind the door. What is one of the things burglars hate? Noise.
