    Regarding the bidet -- I have tried the Culo Clean and the Holey Hiker, and I like the Holey Hiker better. Better aim, better cleaning pressure, and a much smaller size. I find it to be more effective and less cumbersome than the Culo Clean. I can easily use the Holey Hiker on a regular toilet, too, making it great for not just outside use. The Culo Clean is a little large to strategically place when using an actual toilet, due to the seat's hole restricting reach.

    Important backpacking issue that should be discussed. I do bring a lot of t.p. because I am a lady nearing senior category and seem to go 3x more than anyone I am hiking with. Used my hiking pole for digging but finally got one of those trowels about a year ago and is a game changer. Also on east coast use some soft leaves behind t.p. to lessen paper amount. Especially find spice bush and white birch plentiful. Lastly always take in a separate zip top baggy flushable baby wipes. You can leave them out to dry out and then rehydrate with a splash of drinking water. This helps greatly with the cleaning effort. I have also gotten decomposing paper from a local marine store that is typically used on boat with portable toilet. Really enjoy your content John! Thanks

    I carry the main 3 that you carry but I like my TP to be the tight compact backpacking rolls hiking stores sell. I do own those Wisy Wipes but always thought they were a waste compared to cloth, but now you have given me a use for them that may allow me to stretch my TP use. Hand sanitizer is for after poo while I save soap for back at camp.

    You can’t bury toilet paper everywhere. It decomposes at different rates depending on the soil. It’s usually ok east of the Mississippi, but many places out west require it to be packed out. It’s always good to check the regulations where you’re going. I bring Dr Bronners soap. Sanitizer kills the germs, but it doesn’t necessarily remove the stuff. 😯 I want to try a bidet, and have one just like the cheap one you showed. I understand how they work for cleaning yourself, but haven’t wrapped my head around how to avoid accidentally getting your pants wet in the process. Seems like between your ankles is prime real estate for where some water could land. 🤔

    Deuce of spades (3 years, well-used, and mine still looks great too), T.P., baby wipes, a Ziploc for used T.P./wipes, and hand sanitizer. Just saw that black bidet on Garage Grown Gear website, but on my next trip am trying out a small squeeze bottle I already have on hand - so I'm not carrying a lot of extra water and have a dedicated #2 bottle. Should be interesting!

  • @Doc_Watson
    @Doc_Watson3 жыл бұрын

    Another good video. I thought you were going to include the clip of your daughter about being a real hiker when you were talking about becoming a real backpacker. I know it wasn't #2 but that was adorable. Double duty trowel - can be used in the campfire to move coals for cooking/heating food, move ashes around. Realistically, digging the hole and filling it back in, the trowel doesn't touch the 'pile' unless you accidently uncover someone else's. Even if your aim is bad and you miss the hole, you can use a stick or rock to move the matter into the hole and not 'dirty' the trowel that you will be putting back into your pack. TP - some people just use more than others. 'Natural' TP - leaves of three leave them be. ;-) I take some castile soap with me. Either a small amount of liquid or part of a solid bar. Although it's in my poop kit, it's not actually for #2 clean-up. It's just in case I get into some poison ivy. I want to be able to get the oils off me as soon as I know I've been exposed.

    I carry a repurposed lime juice bottle for washing up. It has a plastic insert at the top which converts it to a squeeze bottle. It could probably be used as a bidet. It can definitely be used to wash hands. I much prefer real handwashing with soap rather than sanitizers. One thing most people don’t consider is that water weighs more than wipes & TP. Yes, I am carrying water anyway, but my drinking water is separate from my hygiene bottle. Even if it was not, that is more water that must be carried. While a bidet is probably better for the skin and the environment, I would not switch to that solely for weight reduction.

  • @SemiMono

    @SemiMono

    5 ай бұрын

    Yes in some sense it's not a weight reduction, but in another sense, you already need a means to refill water, close to daily. If you're on a longer trip, having the whole trip's worth of TP or wipes might weigh about as much as a day or two's worth of washing water. But yeah, overall not really a weight savings, if not a slight weight gain.

    Great video JK, thanks for sharing. Started to experiment with a bidet this year as well. I’ve has good results.! The higher the pressure the better the results. For those thinking of trying, add a bidet to your normal kit and see how it goes. That’s what I did. First time used TP and Wissey Wipes. After a few times, I’m getting ready to leave TP home. Bonus: less occurrences of monkey butt after “rinsing”. Remember, more pressure better results.

I do not want my water bottle part that operation. a bidet is a bidet and it is awesome and a water bottle is a water bottle. each has it's own purpose. saving weight is not worth getting sick. I finish the job with one or two sheets of TP and then pack out that TP, it is 99% of the time clean. I used soap to wash. sanitizer does not remove fecal material. however, i do bring sanitizer as well, before meals. more is better. great videos

    I am late to the game on this video - just started watching John Kelley a month or so ago. In case anyone does peruse these comments, one thing I bring has not been mentioned here. I bring a few dark color doggy poop bags to pack out my moist wipes. When done with my business, I'll use a wipe as needed and then put into a single doggy bag. I'll tie it tight, then fold over the top and tie it again - effectively double bagging it. Then put in a small ziploc. Now I don't have to look at a soiled wipe and I can open up that disposal ziploc multiple times without having to expose my previous wipes either visually or by odor. The weight is insignificant.

    I really like your down to earth but funny way of discussing these types of subjects. I actually have a couple questions for you about proper etiquette on the trail. The experts say not to cook at your campsite, and all smelly products go in a bear bag, all to prevent bears and other animals from bothering you and seeing humans as food dispensers. But I see in AT videos people are cooking at shelters. Also, many thru hikers dont bring extra clothes, so what are they sleeping in? Not only for bear safety, but also to protect your gear, I have always been taught to NOT sleep in the same clothes you wore while cooking, as you dont want your clothes to smell like your food. You also dont want to sleep in the same clothes you hiked in as all the sweat dirt and moisture is bad for your gear (sleeping bags, hammocks, etc). I have also read you should store your toothpaste in the bear bag too. But when you brush your teeth, where do you spit all that foamy paste? Same as the cooking, it should not be near where you sleep. But what do all these people at the shelters do? or while dispersed camping around the trail? Thanks for your input.

    Trowel, bidet tip, sanitizer, and three of those same dehydrated wipes…. but only for cleaning emergencies. Once you’re used to using bidets at home using just tp is freaking gross, especially for days on trail. LNT all the way.

    Do NOT bury toilet paper. Regardless of what you use, you need to pack it out.

    I bring something to dig, toiletpaper, a can with holes and a fire steel/bic lighter. Dig a hole ;-), do your business. Wipe, clean and put the used paper in the can loosely, cover up te hole and ignite the paper. Walk away swinging the can like some catholic priest giving last rites to your dump. Smelly? Just a bit and no more than carrying it out. Why not bury? Well when teepee gets wet (so not dissolved and rain doesn't dissolve it) it dries up hard and stays there, so it doesn't break down. So never bury it. Fire hazard? No, not when you make small holes in the can. Nothing ever escapes but smoke, which does keep the stingy critters away btw. The end result is fine white ash which can be scattered when the can is cold to the touch. Bidet is better? Bidets can be more hygienic when you have enough water to use it. But more often than not I tend to have to cope with minimal amounts of water. Since I sweat a lot I need to drink 4 liter (about a gallon) of water when I,m not doing anything active. So when I hike I need to drink a lot and water is not always abundant. BTW a single wet wipe can burn away too as long as it's combined with enough toiletpaper. The can is extra volume? Yes and no, yes it outer size is bigger but you can fill it with other stuff. Can't do that with a bidet. Also I use the can as support, tiny table or a wood burner is needed.
