I would think anyone who cares about the accuracy of their captions would be so glad to have someone who cares to do it well, and knows how.

  • @FreelanceMVP

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Christopher Thank you SO much for subscribing - love that you're here! We have a few videos on the channel so far, just building out our content so we can start to cover more of the bases - short answer: WE'RE WORKING ON IT! ❤️ Here's a little taster in the meantime... Dominating your niche is where the fun really starts. You start to get more invites, more clients come your way, you get to raise your rates with no issue, and money flows like a rushing river... That's the dream, right? In my case, it actually was a dream. It wasn't that easy to get there. In fact, it took me kind of a lot of time grinding to really nail what REALLY was working. Here's what I would say are some of the most important things to realize, that will probably help you get there in a fraction of the time that it took me: 1. NO DRAMA. This is a MAJOR rule. Actively eliminate all headaches from your life. It's like strategically pressing the Unsubscribe button. On the Upwork side of things, that means specifically avoiding any and all projects that could become a headache. 2. See RULE #1! 3. YOUR GUT IS ALWAYS RIGHT. If you've been doing this full-time for a year or have done at least enough projects, you probably know most of the red flags, but pay close attention to the YELLOW FLAGS. Never ignore your what your gut tells you, because it is ALWAYS right. If you have even the tiniest suspicion that this isn't a perfect client / perfect-fit job, then just pass on it. Better to wait for the perfect one, than to spin your wheels, waste time and have a headache that could end in a bad review that slows you down for months. You do your best work (and high-volume stress is FAR MORE manageable) when you're happy, have only great clients, and are enjoying every second of what you do. 4. EMBRACE THE HEADACHE TAX. If you DO take on a headache, make sure it's at least an expensive one, and time-limited. There are few things worse than an imperfect-fit job that drags on and on, that you took because you just wanted some extra cash. Just go in with totally-open eyes, make the conscious decision and say to yourself, "I KNOW that this is going to be a headache - so I better add the headache tax. Am I certain as to when this headache will be over, though?" 5. LOVE SAYING NO. Be extremely comfortable saying No to a LOT. If you have a dry spell, make it a game of "How Many Times Can I Say No Thanks In a Row?" because positivity is infectious, and you'll win projects before you know it. 6. CHANGE IT UP. Always try new things. If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll always get the same results. 7. UP YOUR GAME. In your downtime, you should always be learning. The moment you start to think you're pretty good at what you do, is the moment you plateau and stop growing. 8. CREATE YOUR MOST PRODUCTIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT. Create your ideal work environment, because you will quickly realize that hourly is NOT the way to go. There's only so many hours you can track. Tracking 40 hours / week is a debilitating grind, and the work involved in building a business requires productivity, peace and quiet. Noise-cancelling headphones are your best friend. I like the Airpod Pro + Sony WH1000 MX4 even though those are pretty big, they last all day. 9. TAKE TIME TO JUST CHILL. Take frequent breaks to do things you love. It's like in Indiana Jones where he can't figure out how to get out of the castle, and the father leans back in the chair and says, "I find that when I just sit down and think... the solution presents itself." Chill out and have fun frequently. 10. BE 20% WEIRD. If you worked for someone else before, then you stopped having to be somebody else the moment you left the job. You are now your own person - and that person is probably pretty weird but produces EXCELLENT work. Embrace the weird (20% of the time), because it's awesome. Should I do an actual video about this? Lots of work, but it's worth it.

    @@FreelanceMVP Thank you I appreciate your time, you hit on some great points that are a confirmation for me. I think the process of niching is worth tackling as I'm struggling to find the content that resonates with me. To give some context I've been doing really well for myself recently on Upwork as a UI/UX Designer and built some great relationships along the way. Going from a scarcity mindset to being in-demand has shifted how I want to position myself in the market. Such as transitioning from a generalist to a specialist. I've almost tripled my rate from when I started and have been bombarded with invites from qualified leads. I'm only one person so I can only work so many hours... Things are moving so fast that it's hard to keep the needle moving. Now I'm looking to grow by hiring a freelancer under me or start an agency. Maybe another topic you can explore. I'd be happy to have a chat about it.

  • @FreelanceMVP

    @FreelanceMVP

    @@christopher1152 Great job on doing so well on Upwork! I know what you mean about the “transition” - it’s really not easy and the hourly grind can really wear you down. I remember weeks when I tracked 42, 45, even 55 hours of work. To anyone who’s never used Upwork time tracker, they hear that and think “Oh, that’s a normal workweek…” but you and I both know those are two totally different levels of “active work” that maybe compare if you double the number of hours we’re tracking 😅 Specializing is really helpful. Understand that by specializing, you’re going from “a good one, of many” to “the best, in your small corner of the world.” Only recently did I realize that there were multiple goals beyond that, that start with not just the best, but the ONLY one who does X (something special and different). This is definitely a topic that is going in the Advanced course 😆 but overall, there’s a number of strategies to implement that will help you get there. Headlines include: Niching down to your core deliverables / industries Productizing & packaging your work Going from hourly, to fixed price only… the RIGHT fixed price, though! $$$$ Building your team, and thinking less like a freelancer, more like a business owner Maximizing your production efficiency Focusing on your highest-value work by eliminating, automating and delegating That’s a lot of what I had to go through - does it sounds like part of what you’re starting to experience?

    @Prajwal Sharma Great question! I think one really important thing that I keep hearing from successful freelancers (that I agree with) is this... Your work on Upwork is not freelancing. You are building a BUSINESS. When you think about everything you do as a part of the BUSINESS you're building, then you look at things a totally different way. You take a lot more care with everything you do, you are far more careful with the work you do and the clients you work with - the world just takes on a whole different color when you assume that today, you might be a one-man business, but tomorrow you might have a team of 10 people. You start looking for opportunities to drastically raise your rates (by way of QUALITY) to the point that you can grow your business extraordinarily fast. When you stop thinking in terms of "trading hours for money" and start thinking about "the product that you are selling" then you'll start seeing how to build from there. Is this helpful to you? #freelancevideos

    Thanks @Mary, I really appreciate you (especially since I just spent about 4 hours editing the upcoming video 🥰)! In changing Upwork contract titles, you have to ask the client to make the change - generally you would do that when you present your Scope of Work (before they send you the offer). Does that make sense?

    Yep - the more CONSISTENCY you can bring to your Upwork reviews and track record that show up on your Upwork profile, the better you'll do and the more you'll consistently earn. It's a small detail, but an important one in my opinion (even if it is a bit more "Advanced Mode").

    Hi Evan, I'm struggling to get JSS on Upwork, despite earning more than $10K on the platform and having multiple 5-star reviews. Any strategy to sort this out?

  • @FreelanceMVP

    @FreelanceMVP

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Ask Jamal thanks for joining us! Great question! My thoughts... Great earnings, but how many projects have you completed with 5-star feedback? If the jobs you're working on are large (meaning, one project makes up $9.99k of the $10k) and it's not closed yet, then that can hold you back from getting your JSS and getting Top Rated. Smaller projects will build your feedback in the beginning, so for example if there's one large project you're going to work on, see if the client is OK with ending the contract / giving feedback after you reach a certain milestone (for example at the $2k mark). You lock in the 5-star feedback then propose a new contract (the "..." button after the contract is ended). Break projects apart like that and you'll have a greater NUMBER of feedback scores to feed into your JSS. Here's what Upwork says about when your JSS is calculated: "Not all projects and clients are equal, so the time it takes to get a JSS varies. In order to get a JSS, you need to complete: A. Projects with 2 (or more) different clients B. 4 (or more) different contracts within 24 months More than 90% of freelancers have a score after 5 projects, and nearly all freelancers have scores after completing 8 projects. We exclude clients whose freelancers report a history of unreasonable feedback so that their scores won't count against you, but that may mean it takes longer to accumulate enough reviews to receive your initial score." So, you need at least 2 different Upwork clients, and 4+ contracts within 24 months. The contracts part is the harder of the two criteria typically - thus my suggestion on breaking jobs apart into smaller "sub-jobs" Is that helpful to you?

    @Daffa Prayoga thank you so much for joining us! Great question! If you're just starting out, I would say go Upwork TO START, all day. On Upwork, it's kind of "the sky is the limit." If you're experienced in the field & have some hard skills like the ones that Toptal is looking for, I would check them out too though. If it's a fit, then sign up, it doesn't really hurt. Their jobs are often bigger-ticket, but it comes with a whole host of other things to think about, so I'd only suggest that if you've got free time and are willing to pass a test to get on their platform. What is your niche?

  • @FreelanceMVP

    @FreelanceMVP

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Daffa Prayoga 😻 Really great approach. If you're considering going full-time freelance, I would say consider doing both. Toptal does have a high bar of entry, but as I understand, they have a ton of jobs in the UX UI space. If you're going to apply, make sure that you do an AWESOME job across the entire interview process - everything extremely professional, well-written, you've carefully read and understood ALL of the information they give you, etc. Toptal can definitely be done as second job, you really choose your own level of involvement & availability. I would suggest for consistency though, Upwork is likely better - you have more control over how much work you take on, and how hard you want to work on it. Both platforms do require a substantial amount of time to "really start earning significant money" though, so if it's going to be one or the other, then I'd recommend focusing on Upwork, get that really working, and then get set up on Toptal later on if it's relevant for you. Does that help?

    @Iroshan de Zilva great question, thanks for asking! I would suggest: all of the above! Even though you would want them to, not every client will check out the work examples most relevant to them in your profile, not everyone will click a link on your profile, and not everyone will open an attachment. Your goal should be to point them to the most relevant work examples that will be helpful for them to understand the level of work you do, so having multiple options does help in my experience. Just don’t overload people with 7 different examples - in 99% of cases, 2 specific examples will do the job. You can also “bundle” work examples - for example, rather than sending 8 individual wireframes, you might include one hi-res version with all 8 wireframes on a single image or PDF on an attachment, and on another attachment include a flowchart diagram for functionalities from invision/ figma. Really great question, I hope that is helpful! Have you been on Upwork for long?
