    I’ve been fishing out of a Revo 13 for the last three years and you are so right about your same distance less effort theory. Also, I prefer standard fins over turbo fins. With the standard fins you can cruise in the 2 to 3mph range all day long. I definitely notice the additional effort required to generate speed with longer turbo fins. To me any speed advantage with turbo fins on the Revo 13 is outweighed by the extra effort required to use them. 🎣😃

  • @MooMooOutdoors

    @MooMooOutdoors

    Turbo fins are a must for me. I have had many occasions where the wind (20+ mph) and current drifts me 3+ mph. Not only pedal against to get off the water but to continue to fish until it's absolutely unfishable 😆😆.

    Good explanation regarding speed and stability. Another influence on stability is seating position. Narrow yak's that have low seating positions, and therefore a low centre of gravity, can feel quite stable. Another good point you mentioned is do not lean your head over the edge of your Yak as that is sure to make you flip.

    As a long time canoeing enthusiast, I appreciate the concepts of primary and secondary stability. My limited experience in surf with my old Ocean Kayak Scupper Pro is that you better not get parallel with the waves regardless of what kayak you're paddling! The Scupper was considered to have reasonable secondary stability but I never survived 5 seconds in the breakers if I let that boat get parallel with the waves! I've ordered an Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 as 99% of my fishing will be in lakes and coastal bays/marshes. And it was $650 cheaper than the Revo!!! Anyway MooMoo, keep up the good work. I've found your videos to be technically accurate and address the right points!

    @@kdstoffel7574 Hobies in general, have had cracking issues in the scupper areas, the seating areas, and the drive well areas. Some models more prone than others, over the years. I do hear about cracking in general less with the Hobie Revo, so that's why I sprung for a lightly used one. I really don't think you have much to worry about. I commented because if Hobie did convert their lineup to thermoform, I feel they'd have their quality control considerably more consistent.. I'd say search around the internet about which year Revos are the good ones.. I think it's the newer ones rather than the older ones...

  • @MooMooOutdoors

    @MooMooOutdoors

    4 жыл бұрын

    You don't really have to worry about cracking on the newer models. As far as I know, cracking of drive well area is older model issue. Scupper hole crack happens when you use a scupper cart on 2012? and older models that does not have scupper hole reinforcement. I haven't heard about the seating area though. The truth is all brand and models can crack. It is a plastic after all. However, I hear much less of cracking issues with Hobie compare to other brands.

    Well said. Another con to the Revo 13 is ability to store fish when offshore fishing. When I'm offshore fishing I'm mainly fishing for kingfish. Average size I'd say is 42". A 48" long fish bag will barely fit in the rear tankwell and if I was to load the fish bag down with fish the back of the kayak rides really low in the water.

And, no listing for a Revo 16 appears on Hobie.Com. I wonder if the 16 has been discontinued? Agreed, though, that the 13 is likely easier to transport and store, still long enough for all the on-the-water attributes that make it a great fishing kayak.

    $2.8k translates to $3.2k after taxes. Honestly, if I could have afforded the revo I would have bought one. The price tag was just to steep without all the things I felt I would need. For me that included a fish finder, fish finder mount, transducer mount, battery & box, rod holder & mount, paddle, VHF/UHF radio & kayak cart. It’s crazy how fast the costs stack up after the purchase. Easily an additional $500-600 on top of the purchase price bringing the total cost to almost $4k. A steep & unnecessary cost I simply couldn’t justify for myself or to my family. I believe Hobie to have superior products across the kayak fishing spectrum while at the same time sporting price tags that limit its customer base. Love the content Moo!

    Hobie discontinued Revo 16 starting this year 😢😢. Revo 16 is 1 inch narrower. A few people say it feels unstable but most of the people I know who has 16 says it's stable enough. Yes 16 is quite faster than 13 but less portable. I really think that 13 hits the sweet spot where is portable and efficient.

    This is very common dilemma, Outback or Revo. This really depends on personal needs and preferences. In rough conditions, I think, Revo 13 is better suited if you are comfortable with not having to rely on primary stability and comfortable utilize secondary stability. How much do you weigh?

  • @mrb401

    Hey Moo, What are your thoughts comparing the Revo to the Compass, particularly the speed and agility. Just some background, I have a lot of experience with both the 11 and 13 so I’m very familiar. I also have had some time with the OB. 0 time on the compass. It intrigues me due to its simplicity & light weight. A couple of the same reasons why I love the Revos. I suspect the compass is a little slower and less agile? And better initial stability..The lack of the side handles on the compass is a con, though I suppose one could add them. As a side note, yes the 16 has been discontinued for this production yr. A Hobie dealer rep informed me of the news. Agreed, it is a shame. I demo’d one and it amazed me how easy it was to go FAST.

  • @MooMooOutdoors

    @MooMooOutdoors

    Compass feels very similar to Outback. I want to say equal amount of primary stability and the speed is pretty much the same. Outback is a bit longer but compass being lighter makes up for it, I think. I personally like compass more than Outback because of the portability and simplicity. However, I heard Compass plastic is thinner and that's why it's so much lighter.

    You endure hair raising adventures on the often mean ocean, dealing with wind, killer waves, hungry whales feeding nearby while sharing your prime fishing waters, sea lions harassing you so close to your kayak you could touch them, and the ever present possibility, albeit slim, that you may become rent money when landlord Mr. Great While decides its time to collect. You mean to tell me that after all that adventurous drama on which you and your kayak thrive, you have the guts to tell us that you carry your diehard fishing companion through your quiet, orderly, and pristine home via the front door, living room, dining room, den, etc. then outside again en route to the Kayak hotel? But when I think about it, you have to be tough to fish Big Blue in a kayak, and perhaps equally as tough to saunter through the house while carrying your hardcore fishing buddy to its stall.😎

    The Revo 13 has a number of drawbacks you left out. It may be one of the lightest pedal kayaks, but a 13-foot kayak that weighs 70 pounds (without the seat or drive) is not light. My 16-foot Kaskazi Marlin weighs 48 pounds. That is light. To avoid hull cracking they made the plastic in this kayak very soft and flexible so it scratches and cuts much easier than most plastic kayaks. It handles extremely poorly without the rudder. You have to battle to keep it going in a straight line. And you can't use the hand-controlled rudder when you are paddling. That means it paddles very poorly. The hatches leak like crazy. Although most kayak hatches leak a little the Hobie is the worst I have ever seen. The warranty is one of the worst of any kayak even though the price is extremely high. Be warned.

    How much you can carry is a personal opinion. There is just no reason for a 13-foot kayak to weigh 70 pounds. And you need to add in the weight of the seat, drive and rudder. It is way heavier than it should be.
