So I know virtually nothing of paint, other than whenever I sand plastics and metals the results end up terrible...it's a personal failing. I've also historically gotten really bad results when using masking tape to protect things. I've acquired a charcoal colored camry with a great engine and a decent body, but the paint is a disaster with completely missing paint spots on the hood and trunk and clear coat missing on the roof... looks of it don't bother me (call me mr. utilitarian), but there are already some of those missing paint spots getting some rust in them and I want to protect this thing from rusting for the next 10 to 15 years in the cheapest, least sanding way possible (I live in a mostly dry climate with no salted roads, but fog december - january). Do you think if I just did some terrible sanding job of the rusty spots and then applied some kind of anti-rust product to the metal and then spray and wipe this ceramic coat over it, it would prevent rusting?

Please just sand and paint it if your going to do color than clear, use 600 grit sandpaper, 220 the rust spots and use bondo to fill over it then sand the bondo down with 320, then glaze it, then 600 it and prime it then sand the primer with 600 and 600 the whole area and paint it

Also for tape use yellow painters tape and don't leave it on longer than a few days

Also while 600 grit sanding the whole area do it with wet/dry paper and do it wet and keep it wet
