For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. kzread.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.

For the home owner with relatively normal sized lawns you can’t go wrong with the new battery powered tools. Even the snow blowers are fantastic. So glad Toro has entered this market. Ego needs competition to keep them on their toes. I Truly believe Ego redesigned their single stage snow blower because of Toro’s awesome entry to the field.

That was a great video! Really liked the load test you did with the bucket of water. I suppose I’m not the typical homeowner because I have 5 acres with thicker-stalk plants and brush. It can still be cut with a line trimmer, but I definitely need something with torque and I think that EGO string trimmer fits the bill. I’m currently running a Husqvarna gas trimmer, but it’s getting long in the tooth and I’ve been thinking about an electric one. I was already looking at the EGO anyway because I have an their hedge trimmer and this really seals the deal.

Great testing on these trimmers. What goes through my purchasing decisions is if you already have “x” brand ( I have an EGo blower) I’d prefer to use the same battery on the next tool I get. Having two batteries now helps with having one charged and ready all the time. My hand power tool line is Ryobi and I have three batteries. Often I go to the second and sometimes the third battery on a project. After watching this review I’d lean to to Toro. Thank you!

Replaced the old B&D string trimmer with the EGO from HDepot. The EGO absolutely blew the old one away in terms of power and performance and battery duration. Like night and day. Have 3 acres, takes around 1.5 hours to go all the edging. The EGO battery won't last that long, so I split the job into 2 days and charge overnight. Too cheap to buy a spare battery. Oh, and replacing the string is easier than on the old B&D. I can recommend EGO, but you'll need a gas trimmer for constant use.

Lithium Ion batteries really solved a lot of the problems that older battery operated tool had. You don't need to fully discharge them and it is not rare now to see battery rated to last well over 1000 charge cycles. Ego battery have a 10 years shelf life, 3 years warranty (tool is 5) for residential applications. Their batteries are quite smart. They will heat themself first (pulse) if they detect they are cold. They will auto dischsrge after 30 days of not being used to 30% capacity which will extend their life.

Some points regarding Ego (which I own): 1. All ego batteries are interchangeable. (You can take your lawn mower battery and put in in your string trimmer and vice versa. Of course if you put your string trimmer battery in your snow blower you won't get much runtime at all and your trimmer can become heavy if you put a 7.5ah battery in it.) Toro has a 40V and 60V line up. So you won't be able to swap your chainsaw battery in your trimmer. 2. Not sure for the 2.5ah, but my 5ah batteries are charged up in 40min only and is ventillated while charging which cools it down. 3. you can get a backpack attachment to put a big battery on it, and the bavkpack plug into the tool. That will reduce the weight you have to hold if you do this long time. 4. If you are lucky you can find that exact same trimmer but with the older battery model. The only difference is the power gauge on the old batteries is just green or red (red means under 15%). The rest is the same. Overall I find the Ego ecosystem to be very user friendly and they apoear to care about maintaining a good backward compatibility. The newer batteries are still compatible with older systems.

Can you test the Ego's lowest rpm it will go? I dislike my Milwaukee trimmer because I cant slow it's rpm's enough to go around chain link fences without breaking the string. I need a trimmer that I can slow down before it cuts power off or at least a trimmer that will go slower than my Milwaukee. If you notice they advertise thay have a variable peed trigger fro 0-4600 but that not true they will not go that low of rpm's. I have a gas timmer and I can get the head to barely spin but not a battery operated one. Thats their weak point I believe.

I think the only comparison you're missing here is the battery charge time on both. I feel like speed of charging is really important when selecting battery powered tools. I have a junky black and decker trimmer (free is for me), but it really does no good because it takes 9 hours to charge. If I run out, a 30 minute trim becomes a 2 day job. Can you let us know the charge times?

Good point! The EGO battery takes 50 minutes to charge and the Toro is 60 minutes

I have the Toro 51830 model shown in this video. The included head unit doesn't work as well as I'd hoped, the string keeps getting locked up intermittently. Want to replace the head unit with the Echo Speed feed 400, but I can't figure out how to get this Toro's head unit off....have searched the internets for instructions on this, but haven't been able to find the specifics of this unit's "trick" to unscrewing the head unit. Anyone know how to do this?

If $ was not a factor and you used your trimmer for about 30 minutes, once a week, would you choose gas or battery? This is normal edge trimming, no heavy weed cutting. I have a Red Max gas trimmer that has given me years of trouble-free service that may need replacing soon. I respect your opinion and enjoy your channel.

I had lots of gas edgers/trimmers. I will never go back again. I love being able to grab it edge a little, stop start. etc. Love the low noise. The only gas non-mowing tool I still use is a very large Stihl backpack gas blower for big cleanups or if I am doing the whole place. I use battery blowers all wekk long, I clean out my truck bed, get the leaves off the deck, pine needles, the battery blower is perfect for all those jobs

Homeowner here, I would go with battery all the way. I own a gas 2 cycle, a Ryobi gas 4 cycle, (rarely use) an old plug in, and 2 battery ones, a 20 volt Black & Decker and a 24 volt Toro. I go back to the days when the they had the big heavy lead acid batteries. I also have a Ryobi 40 Volt which I use mostly for the hedge trimmer attachment, don't really like the way it lags while starting up. I like the smaller battery ones for their lightness. Great thing about the battery ones is that you can just turn them every which way without worrying about carb gas starvation or getting burned, lay them down & take a break w/out shutting down & starting up again etc. Great thing about ones he just tested is that at least for the Toro, I looked it up and it uses either .80 or .95 line, whereas most smaller battery ones use .65 which is more prone to breakage, most gas use .95. Hope this helps.

Both the Ego and Toro are exceptional products however I would have to give the nod to EGO simply because of two things: #1 the warranty. The ego has a 5 year tool and 3 year battery warranty. The Toro is a 3yr tool and battery warranty. #2 The Ego has a higher amp hour battery. 2.5 vs 2.0 for the Toro which can be used in other ego products. Runtime is subjective to real life load conditions. The price is the same for both products so why not get more for your money???
