Best Bone Conduction Headphones | Aftershokz Aeropex

Ғылым және технология

Review of the Aftershokz Aeropex bone conduction headphones, the latest 2019 earphones with open-ear design to keep you aware of your environment - ideal for jogging, cycling or hitting the gym. I've been testing the Aeropex for a week now and here's my full unboxing and comparison vs last year's Aftershokz Trekz Air headphones, to see what's been upgraded and whether this new pair are worth grabbing.
Bone conduction is designed to keep your ear canals free, so cyclists, joggers and outdoor enthusiasts can stay safe. This fresh model is the best example in 2019, offering better battery life, volume and noise leakage compared with the old Air 'phones. The Aeropex definitely works well for enjoying podcasts and audio books when you're out or at home, although in noisy environments it's still a struggle to hear what's going on. Music playback isn't as strong as you'll get with proper over-ear headphones either, as you'd expect.
Are you tempted by bone conduction earphones? These are my favourites right now, so check out my full review and how they compare to the Trekz Airs.

It's most likely so that they can be ip67. It's easier to seal them if you don't have to plug a cable in. That leaves you with a magnetic charging cable, and no one seems to have standardized on that. It's the the wild west of cell phones when they were first produced with everyone having their own cable now it's down to usb-c, lightning, and micro-usb. Hopefully the next iteration has induction charging so you don't have to plug them in at all. At they at least they give you 2 cables out of the box, instead of 1 like other manufactures have in the past.

I have had my aftershocks Air Model for over a year now and I love them I can use them with my hearing aids and not have to worry about anything The biggest thing I would hate about the new model is that proprietary charging cable. If they got rid of that and went with USB C, for example, it would be an easy upgrade to recommend for me.

Im a volume head so i like to play it loud and these are loud! Great bass i would definitely keep using for a long time, not to happy about the new charger cable for the new ones due to you need to have that specific charger that isnt so popular im sure you won't find that in nearby stores if you loose or break the originals

  • @Steamrick

Interesting. I'm guessing the change in the charging cable is due to the IP67 rating. I have the Air model, but though the longer battery life, better water resistance and lesser bleed-through to the environment is tempting, I'm not having any trouble with the Airs, so I won't be switching. That said, I went from the Bluez 2 to the Air quite recently, so maybe in another one or two model iterations?

I have several versions of Aftershokz Bone Conduction Wireless Headphones - They are generally all the same - re-invented in minor ways to maintain Market - They are good and work well - I use them for cycling to keep ear on traffic while giving me a beat and being able to answer calls of importance - If they (the tech side - NOT THE MARKETING CRAP) REALLY wanted to change - make the controls better - they are SUPER clumsy for changing songs back and forth and often screw up phone commands versus music control - Other than that - Variation in color IS nice to see and I suspect I'll try them out -= Good review and overall good device!.... as for the comment on the companies true origin - Isn't EVERYTHING tied to China in some way:)

@@gonefishing744 Hi, this is my review: Do NOT buy these expecting high sound quality, not even close to it. These are best for people with specific needs. They are nice but if you increase volume level to around 70% you will feel that weird tingling sensation which can be distracting. The fit also is not exactly adjustable. I don't like the stiff neck band. I wish if they replaced it with a simple flexible cable. The microphone is average for phone calls. But, these are simply the most comfortable headset I ever used. I don't tolerate in-ear earbuds for prolonged use. But I can wear these for the whole day and I forget that I am wearing them. They are also safe while driving/biking/running because your ears will be open to hear everything. I think these also can be used for people with some external and middle ear hearing problems as a bluetooth headset that may surpass their hearing limitations. Also no need to take it off/put it on multiple time during the day. Just wear and forget. I hope in the future they can use USB Type-C charging port. I understand the physical/technical and waterproofing limitations but I believe they can do it. They just need to continue improving their products and I believe in few years they can get everything just right. Improvements needed in future models: 1- Increase sound volume without increasing the tingling sensation. 2 - Use a better more flexible, pocket-able and adjustable design. 3- Better Mic quality for phone calls. 4- Use USB Type-C for charging 5- Add the ability to connect to 3 devices at the same time. 6- Bonus: Add a sound pass-through feature, that will make it function as a hearing aid device for people with external and middle ear hearing problems. Moral of the story, I did not regret buying these but they can be better.

These sound much better with the ear plugs in if you are looking for more volume and fidelity. I have the Titanium model and love it due to my hearing loss from loud amplifiers in the early part of my music career. These are great because they don't blow the rest of my hearing out like a conventional hearing aid would. Doctor "you have hearing loss from loud volume so let me fit you with a hearing aid that will sit right next to you ear drum and amplify the sound coming in so you can hear it" lol. Do they sound like a $400 set of headphones? No. But they won't destroy your hearing either. The trade off is great for me, and they do sound quite good once you get used to "the sound in your head" rather than the sound in your ears. I love mine. I also use them for watching TV and that way I don't drive my wife crazy with the volume I would need otherwise, and still not be able to hear with the clarity these give me. I will not be upgrading to that proprietary plug though. Thanks for pointing that out. I will order another set of the Titanium's while they are still available.

According to the official specs, playback has gone from 6 to 8 hours on the newer model, which is a fairly significant improvement. I'm guessing the new proprietary charging port is because it's easier to waterproof it that way.

I find these great in pretty much every way. The sound quality for music is pretty good - even for classical music. of course over the ear noise cancelling headphones are best for that but these are better than Airpods, etc. in my experience. The only downside is that the multipoint connection doesn't seem to work. I have to re pair to a new source every time even if it's been paired before. Does anyone else have the problem. The multipoint connection has proven very useful for me since I can use for phone calls and listening to sound on my computer but if I have to manually repair every time then I end up not bothering. Is this just me or have others experienced this as well?

Sure tredding water water or dog paddling and not flip turning they should work fine, but as soon the device goes under water such as a flip turn as most competitive swimmers do it will break the music stream. AfterShokz also has another bone conducting headphones coming out soon called Xtrainers(sp?) which are designed for swimming and have 4GB built in memory but no Bluetooth. I wish AfterShokz would come out with bone conducting headphones for swimming with memory and Bluetooth for land use. The problem is that there are other companies that have both memory and Bluetooth for devices for swimming and land but there's always someone complaining why their Blue cuts out everytime the flip turn. I guess have to get AfterShokz Aeroplex and TrainerXs when they come out... Ugh @Chris Schuler
