    Hello, your videos are some of the best on KZread. Very well done. Thank you. I use your gang hook idea along with an egg loop to catch surf perch it off the coast of northern California. It really works great to hold the shrimp on. Plus the extra hook helps bring them in through the surf.

    That made me want to go fishing - right now ! One tip i picked up - can’t remember where is to pump nippers on the first 1/3 of the rising tide , theory is that as the tide drops the nippers go deep and their burrow closes up but as it starts to rise they come up to clear out the entrance to their burrow . I never got around to checking if it is true or one of the many old wives tales that Fishing is renowned for ! Mustad used to make a size 14 long shank and they were the best hook for poddy mullet and garfish as you could grab the shank of the hook and shake the mullet or garfish off into a bucket without touching them , unfortunately they are no longer made 😭 Thanks for the video Roger - wish i was self isolating down there on the south coast !

    Thanks for sharing, this is really helpful. Could you show the best way to set hook on GID squid lure?

  • @RogerOsborneFishing

    @RogerOsborneFishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi William, when a squid grabs a squid lure you gently maintain constant pressure as you wind it in. The way the spikes are designed on a squid jig, as a squid tries to escape and pull away it keeps itself impaled on the lure. The retrieve for using a squid lure is - allow the lure to sink almost to the bottom, lift up a couple of meters, wind up the slack and then repeat.

    Great vid Roger. The keeper hook doesn't seem to be used all that much this side of the Tasman but I've used it for years and it['s truly amazing the number of fish caught by the keeper and not the main hook. This puzzled me for years because I couldn't work out why. That was until I ended up at Kalbarri and visited a sort of aquarium come all sorts of shop. These fish tanks were big and they had big fish in them . Feeding time was interesting because in the fish feeding frenzy you could actually watch what the fish does when feeding. These fish were around the three kilo mark and when they took a chunk of fish they held it in their mouths for a few seconds then spat it out and then went back and swallowed it. I think they first took it into their mouth and tasted it. If it tasted ok they then went back and had another go. The point to this is that is where I think the keeper works. It hooks the fish on the way out before the baited hook gets them. Could be wrong but I don't know any other way.

    Hi John, the tide doesn't really matter. I go anytime. The main difference is that at high tide you will need to use a sieve just like in my video where I was getting Yabbies at high tide. At low tide you just pump the holes near the waters edge up onto the bank, Roger

    Hi Roger , just found your channel and really like it. As a complete amateur fishermen just curious about your Pilchards as bait. So when you buy a frozen pack from the local servo of fish shop what do you do next? Do you treat the pilchards in any way such as salt them. Do you break off a chunk to go fishing with and leave the rest of the block frozen and in the fridge for another time. Thanks Roger you have been a great help.

    Hi Roger. Love you video's. I live in Perth and people tell me there are no beach worms here, would this be true? I would love to catch some myself. Keep up the good work mate.

    Hi Roger, very informative video. I'm having trouble keeping my bait, the small fishes eat quickly and I have to keep putting bait on the hook. What's the trick to keep the bait away from small fishes?

    Hi Wanda, it depends on the bait. Some baits are softer than others and need replacing after a couple of bites if you don't hook the fish, there's not much you can do about that. Tougher baits are Squid and pieces of fish fillet that have the skin attached. You can salt many baits which makes them firmer. Just buy the home brand salt from the supermarket.

    You find Yabbies(nippers) in Salt Water Estuaries, that is Rivers and Lakes on the sand flats at low tide. You have to look and see if there are any there.

    Hi Roger, for the half pilly what size hook are you using? I was told 1/0 but it doesn’t have good hook exposure.

    Hi Christian, I usually use a 4/0 hook, either that or a 3/0 otherwise you definitely would not get any hook exposure. Roger

    Hi, due to your beach experience, lately I have been getting smoked and unsure what kind of fish. Will take a double Snell rig with slab fillet but unlike most fish I’ve caught so far it runs as fast and directly out to sea from the beach, different locations in the last couple weeks so far broken hooks and broken line due to trying to stop them before getting spooled on 50lb leader 30pound braid mainline, 8000 baitrunner, I’ve caught 12kg Jew. And smaller sharks but these lately have been non stop run no head shakes? Would it be tuna? Or big shark? South east qld

    Hi Brendan, I think most likely large sharks. Have you been bitten off on any of those trips?

    @@RogerOsborneFishing hi roger thanks dot the reply, have not been bitten off yet only snapped leaders from me putting the drag on and snapped hooks. There is a lot of birds and long tail tuna working further off the beach. My thoughts were a large sharks just mouth hooked but I’ve never caught one over 1.5mtrs so unsure if they did a non stop run straight offshore or not. Each fish has gone non stop run straight offshore each time. Love the videos still learn alot each time thank you
