I've seen horns that intentionally had no spit valves for the alleged acoustic benefit and it's total lunacy. You'll never notice that, but you'll definitely notice all the time you waste pulling slides. In HS, I taped all the slides on my Conn 8D so I could pull them fast and replace them back where I had them. I used the 3rd valve a lot, and I had to dump it constantly. I have a ventil-fanfare with no spit valve and it's an absolute chore to dump it. Either rip out the monster tuning slide, or wait for the condensation to make the 3.5 foot trip out the leadpipe. Fortunately, it's no trouble on Rotary Flugelhorn. You just bring the horn up to play and all the condensation runs out the horn and into your mouth.

I used to sell Hans Hoyer Horns and Wagner Tuban in 79/80. Couldn't afford one then and still can't. Loved the sound. In middle school and highschool i would dump spit when ever there was a break between songs or during. Never had a problem not having a spit valve.

An important question to raise is this - from a repair/servicing point of view - are spare parts readily available? If not, and this is quite common with Chinese made instruments - then if something breaks (e.g. bent rotor etc), you will be up for a new horn or a pretty expensive repair bill...

Conspiracy theory: the only reason Trent finally finished his "All About The French Horn Part 2" video is because he knew he would be reviewing this instrument and preferred referencing that video rather than getting into the nitty-gritty of double horns and the like here.

Playing badly says Trent, promptly going on to play better than I could. I've probably played the double french horn maybe a dozen times in my 53+ years on this rock, and the rusty monstrosity I played convinced me it was a mediaeval torture instrument designed to shred your lip and make your intestines the same shape as all those wraps of tubing. Therefore it's nice to hear it handled properly, and that premium model in particular sounds as gorgeous as it looks.

I don't understand why the Alex has that huge change valve, but it's been part of the design from the start, in the 1950s. That makes it super obvious when someone copies the design, because they invariably use that huge change valve, too. I know that early Holtons had a piston change valve, and some early 20th-century British horns were all-piston valved. I still don't know why they used a tuba valve for a french horn.

It's an odd choice... I play an Alex 1103 which has the F/Bb valve on the other side to the 103, and it's a normal size (slightly smaller diameter than the other three rotors). Perhaps they were trying to make the radius through the rotor as large as possible (tight bend radii affect the tone quality)

My (old) Alex unlike the one shown has a fixed bell. On pro models (Alex, Paxman etc) It's simply an extra cost option when the original purchaser places their order, along with other choices like gold brass, nickel silver etc. Can be added later, but it's not cheap, plus you need a new case.

Yeah. Because high school kids aren’t clumsy at all. Can’t see anything bad potentially happening from having them empty water without a spit valve during a concert. Nothing at all. ROFL If this horn-shaped object came from the same factory as the “anthem” horn I tried, DO NOT BUY IT. Also, I wouldn’t argue that one’s primary concern with selecting a horn isn’t “the sound” - especially for high school students. It SHOULD be CONSISTENCY (can the horn actually be put in tune with itself? I’ve played a few that cannot) and the partials being where one expects them to be, again, especially important for high school/middle school students. If those two things are top notch, the “sound” should follow.
