If I have to go for a trip around Australia would I choose the Hilux or Ranger? personally I would choose the Hilux for peace in mind. The comparison is made based on brand new trucks, the fair and accurate comparison should be made between them @ 50,000 and 100,000 Km's then the reliability and practicality will play big factor in deciding which one is better. I used to own a wild track ranger @ 100,000 Km's all 4 shocks started leaking, all bushes gone, gearbox playing up, annoying noises in the interior and dashboard, AC fans and vents needed replacement, and much more. thus, I replaced it with Hilux Rogue 23, not because of the riding dynamics is better nor the tech's but because I wanted a reliable truck that can serve me for years to come with no headache. Love my Hilux. And I disagree about the ride quality Matt. My Hilux is a current generation single cab cab-chassis and I have no complaints about the ride. Its firm but never harsh or uncomfortable even on long trips. And I regularly average 8L/100km, and sometimes less.

Yeah I'm out! the SAME ENGINE THE SAME ENGINE for 70k.7:40 and I truely😴😔 thought there was a whole lot more.

The Hilux is more about reliability and keeps its resell value for so long but in my country there is only one dealer and they don’t provide good service. So I did choose the Mazda Bt50 for a better service and the design. Features are better than the hilux.

Thanks Matt - I drive a 2010 diesel auto SR Hilux and quite impressed with its off-road ability and reasonably comfortable on road performance - like the Rogue I enjoy the confidence of analogue dials and knobs on the infotainment system - the Ford Ranger has been highlighted in recent media stories of failing LCD panels, failed electronic parking brake and stopping immediately at 80 km per hour without warning - with the new Hilux also having a conventional handbrake instead of electronic parking break means I’m likely to always have breaking ability when stationary - I’ll always choose a Toyota ute over any other brand for reliability and build quality - not negotiable - the only elephant in the room is the fact the new Landcruiser V6 diesel burns a lot of oil which may be an issue if the next gen Hilux has it - I’d choose a basic SR Hilux and put the A$ savings towards accessories including hydraulic struts on the rear tailgate as I’ve done with my N70 Hilux - the problem with a wider track/body is narrow bush tracks will be a no go unless you’re happy to scratch the duco.

Hey Matt, how would you compare this to the Navara Pro 4X Warrior? Both are pretty old platforms but $72k drive away on the Warrior seems like good value for what you get considering for MY23 they added heated electric seats.

I’ve got a standard review of it coming soon! The car I drove had 24,000km on it. And it was holding up!

Newest spec sheet isn't always best. I've just ordered one of these over the Ranger as I cannot trust a vehicle that has so much tech and a fresh powerplant (too many unknowns). Hilux has a tried and tested platform which has had all of the bugs worked out. Ranger 5 years from now maybe. I've owned 4X4's that I couldn't trust and there is no worse feeling when you are remote.

Matt, great honest review… do you feel the Pro 4X warrior is a good Ute? I’m after an outta the box competent 4wd… I have a triton now, but has no diff lock or super select x it’s a GLX-R and I think ive reached the point in 4wd where I’ve reached the limit of the triton in standard form, so I either throw money at the triton or buy something else with better out of the factory performance. Straight and to the point Mat. I like that you have not been indoctrinated into the Toyota religion, where if you point out all the wrong doings of Toyota - nerds keep buying them and always throw up the "reliability" point card. (lets not mention the DPF ), to justify their purchase decision. I sometimes wonder if the Toyota buyer, buys on supposed reputation, rather than researching and taking an understanding of the mechanics and engineering? Don't get me wrong, they make a good product - but it is a product that is not streets ahead of anything else, segment to segment. I thought the Rogue was pitched at off-road market, but then rolls on highway treads? Guess it's a price thing.

Yeah and they know that buyers will dump the stock rubber anyway if they want to head off-road.

I would like to see a tow test on this model but include a exhaust gas temp monitor and transmission oil temp monitor then find a long hill and tow something like a box trailer full of bricks or soil for the yard

I think then new face lifted Musso will be worth checking out. At the moment I'm looking at getting a new dual cab, most likely a Musso but the Canon and Triton are in the mix. Bottom line, I'm not someone who is not going to spend much more north of $45k because I'm not that way inclined.

You cannot go wrong with the Musso , I have the ultimate lux xlv ,well under 50grand .Has every thing,heated ,cooled seats ,nappa leather,folding heated mirrors and much more a great big truck..

Would be interested in a comparison between top spec Triton and the Rouge. As I don't know squat about 4x4 Ute's I just hear about the reliability of the Mitsubishi and there gearbox set up. I'm not a brand fan so any help would be great.

Hey Brenton. I have driven both and I would much prefer to live with the Triton. If you are aiming for a 4x4 to actually take off-roading then the HiLux would be a better bet. But as far as living with it, Triton is a much more easygoing rig.

Some feedback about Triton: Engine and transmission are not that good in terms of reliability, that said as far as I know there has been very little or next to nothing said about the DPF/EGR. Mitsubishi have set the suspension up to be as soft as possible but that has the unwanted "wallow" effect, steering and brakes are fine for this class, if you like feel through the wheel then the Triton with its hydraulic power steering is for you. Interior and exterior are more function than form based but that is fine as everything works the way it should work, not flashy but functional. The best feature is Super Select II (which will be in the upcoming Nissan based Triton), this allows drivers to basically be in AWD mode at any given time at any speed any road surface and condition, the torque split is while in 4H (open centre diff) re: AWD is something like 30/70 so understeer (or pulling effect) on steering is pretty manageable via the ESP/TC system, there is a downside though with fuel usage about 5% more than being in standard 2WD mode, you of course have 4x4 High (which locks the cntre diff for full 50/50 torque split on dirt/icy roads) then 4x4 Low and if you need more there is a Rear Diff Locker that said using RDL means you lose traction control for the front wheels, it is and is not a major issue but could be. If I were in the market for this type of vehicle (and I will be in around 10 months but putting the order in start of June for the EOFYS) I would put Triton well ahead of the China options like GWM/LDV and the South Korean Musso, to me the Triton is up there with the current gen Navara (the Np300 or D23) has been a surprise since 2015 save for the saggy rear suspension if towing otherwise it is a great vehicle from Nissan and Prodrive makes its better, as for the Hilux Rouge going head to head against it? Nope.

​@@351tgv hey mate. I am curious, where did you get the info about Triton engine and transmission not being reliable? Hilux, Fortuner , dmax, mux triton all use the same Aisin transmission. They just tune it differently. The only issue with the Triton engine is the size, but it still goes well. I drive a Mr Triton glx plus. I have been in the new Hilux sr and older hiluxes. I have driven hiluxes and prados. And there is a huge difference between them in comfort and everyday drive. Off-road difference between them is definately not something that should really impact your purchasing decision.

This Rogue is the best looking ute in the market, very sleek and elegant design and far better than the boxy Ranger

I bought it for reliability, all the technology and extra comfort loose a lot of value while waiting for the towing truck 6 times in 80.000Km

manual or auto? I know many owners of Hilux that cant get anywhere near 10L per 100km with auto versions.

Test drove a Hilux a couple of years ago and was pretty shocked at how harsh the ride was, Doesn't sound like much has changed. I like the way they look.... but they seriously have to update the interior, Even the new GR sport still has the iPad tacked on.looks fricken terrible.

Im abit confused with this review, 4x4 utes are known for there off road abilities, i think alot of people who buy these utes would prioritise off road ability and reliability over how comfortable they are driving to work. I think this should be taken into account when comparing or determining what the "best" ute is. If all you plan to do is drive around your local streets then yes your review meets that buyer but for the most part i think off road ability is important. I also think re sale value should be added to your review, in 5-10yrs time having the ability to claw back some of the 70k will be handy for most people and the hilux holds there value like crazy. Not a toyota owner btw and i liked your review, but i am looking to buy a 4x4 ute and these things are what im looking for in a review cheers!

Does Toyota think people have forgotten their terrible/ notorious avoidance on warranty issues - too the point ,people were forced too sue ( DPF ) and Toyota was found guilty and now they have serious oil consumption issues with the LC300. I was a die hard Toyota customer but not anymore nor will I touch a Ford they have major transmission overheating issues. When are these companies going to stop using Australians as their own R&D mugs and stop dumping inferior quality vehicles that have huge price tags on the Australian market.For the record I defy anyone too prove what I have stated above too be incorrect.

Didn’t have an 8 speed back then.. fuel economy was always an issue and petrol cost alot more than diesel… now petrol 10-20% cheaper than diesel.. dpf and fuel injector issues nowadays also

Hey Matt nice review I’ve got one of these 23 rogues in Saturn blue (12000 kms in 3 months and it’s a dream. It drives great. The interior is dated I admit but I not one to fuss. My best mate has a 23 raptor and I’ll admit my hilux just doesn’t compete in driving dynamics and features. But throwing on a set of falken wild peaks instead of those horrible grandtrek road tyres it is just the best off-road. I just don’t like how the locking diff is only in 4 low. But to conclude if the raptor didn’t have a 2 year wait list I would have gotten one but having lived with the hilux and never stressing over reliability and haven’t regretted my choice + it’s great to live with ( I am 19 so a ride isn’t that big of an issue). An assisted tailgate would be nice tho as I use I’d a lot for work and opening and closing the tailgate while holding materials is tough. Great review would hope to see an off-road review soon

damn it's not Cinco de Mayo (re: 5th May) yet so I can't tell you about the 2.3L turbo petrol and 10-speed auto. What I can say is that Ford Australia are very short sighted for not doing customers the turbo petrol option for both Ranger & Everest.

Matt, hey I have a request: once you get your hands on the VW Amarok 2.3L Turbo petrol please put it head to head against the Ranger V6 turbo diesel. Maybe then Ford Australia will wake up and realise a very missed opportunity by not offering turbo petrol in Ranger and Everest outside of the Ranger Raptor which is not what I need. I am no fan of VW but the VW Amarok turbo petrol looks like it might be what I end up in, that said I would love for an ATLAS virions of it re: 4x4 wagon version.

@@therightcar due to the embargo I cant say much that said it will be a winner for VW, once you drive the turbo petrol version you wont be disappointed, ok maybe every time you refill fuel but its worth paying that extra amount so you don't have to deal with the drama of Euro 6 turbo diesel. I just wish that Ford Australia would wake from its slumber and offer the turbo petrol for Ranger/Everest, nah who am I kidding Ford Australia don't give a about Australian buyers.

Ford have royally screwed up by not offering the 2.3L turbo petrol i4 in Everest and Ranger, it drives so well in the Amarok that should VW decide to offer it in lower spec it will be the best seller, also steering wise VW have a faster ratio and slightly heavier on the assistance levels which makes it feel like an SUV, the rear is at best lumpy but near as good as the previous gen Amarok, the interior? MEH, no hard knobs/buttons for AIR wil hurt but you get used to it, seats are as good as Ranger/Everest, I would rate the Amarok as good as Ranger and with turbo petrol power its got non e of that garbage Euro 6 diesel worries about it, that said it is Euro 6 for petrol so does have a PPF and therefore you need minimum 95 RON.

I drove a friend’s new ‘22 Hilux dual cab about 30km and couldn’t believe how harsh the ride was. The vibration actually made me feel sick. Every Toyota I’ve driven has had hard uncomfortable seats and a ride quality id describe as agricultural. Keep buying if you believe the hype.

@@marcusjackson4063 I’ve owned a Landcruiser a Hilux and a Camry. I had to drive a Hilux for the company I worked for. Almost every other employee agreed how bad the seats are. The most comfortable Ute imho is the Amarok. I drive a 23 Everest Sport. Luxury!

my great wall gets 7.6l per 100. I've had ranger and navara before this and this car drives the best. These guys just protecting the big brands. Navara have crap rear coil suspension and fords are rust buckets from my own ownership experience.

VW have there own specific transmission shift points for the 10-speed torque converter, the engine has more then enough torque where the transmission is not downshifting to keep speed with or with out cargo / towing load, in terms of torque its similar to the sequential turbo diesel but with a wider torque curve so you can push to 4,500rpm and its pulling like a train in lets say 5th/6th gear, the downside? fuel usage, I did around 500km in the test version around Sydney metro and all the way out to Bathurst (granted we went though Bells line and not Great Western Highway (both ways) and anyone who have driven Bells Line knows what I mean by altitude changes up and down), numbers? combined was showing average of 15.7L per 100km, it started to drop down once of the M4 back to Sydney but then we hit traffic at Parramatta and that is where the fuel usage went up again (Sydney traffic is MEH so it is what is), at Bathurst we did 3 laps of Mount Panorama which was great. If you want to know anything else just ask.

just test drove a GR Sport - I couldn't believe how rubbish the ride quality was! It would be nice to see a proper GR performance off roader, but frankly I would rather see this in an SUV/wagon style body and not wasted on a ute

I don’t own them - I only test them and tell people what’s best. Some people might have issues because of the way they maintain (or don’t) their vehicles.

Toyota continues to focus on longevity and durability, but that is getting old. These very qualities have allowed Toyota to command a high resale value. On the ergonomics side they offer very little. Not to mention the exorbitant service costs and high cost of parts.

It's when you work and live in harsh environment /conditions that you can appreciate a Hilux. You can't review it while using it as a aoccer mom Volvo sedan and complain about everything being " Owkay". I live in Togo and work in forestry, I own a 2022 Hilux that handles all the abuse, mud and horrible roadtrips thrown at it daily.

You’re not the normal user case for an Australian buyer then mate. The average HiLux here spends as much time in shopping centre car parks as you spend beating your truck up.

It is nice working car but shit interior. Cant decide between ranger and hilux. For confortable i would say ranger. Much better.

Sorry, but i can't see $ 70 to $ 80 grand in any dual cab ute. Also, I can't see why anyone who's not a tradie would want one.

The Ford Wildtrak leaves all other utes in the dust. The tech in Ford far, far outshines the basic actual nothingness of all others. The Toyota has no tech.

Agreed the ride is trash - overpriced Hilux, more value in the Ranger.

Overpriced especially with all the rivals ! I drove one the other day ! Didn’t feel any different from the other various utes in our fleet !

He doesn't like Hilux coz he has a ford raptor. 🤷🫢

Seriously, I was in a Nissan Navara Warrior today, lovely Renault 2.3L bi-turbo and 6-speed manual, one of the last to have manual transmission, PREMCAR have done a great job (as I never doubted as they were the team behind the FG/FG X FPV Falcon's while they were known as PRODRIVE) with the suspension upgrade and other bits and pieces but shame they are not allowed to work on the engine, look its fine for what it is but PREMCAR should been allowed to see what they can do with that Renault engine, other then that its better then the Rouge by a long and wide margin.
