Facts....ive been a fan of Steve O since I was like 5 years old lol....when he got sober I felt happy for him. It honestly helped me with my own choices in life. Wasn't Steve-o deep but I always told myself if a guy like Steve-o can quit I definitely have to if I know it's an issue

Speaking from someone who's has been dealing with addiction for half my life, and made it to the other side. When someone who's been to the depths expresses concern bc they care it pays to listen. Although it is not easy.

What I've loved about Steve-O sober, is that he hasn't lost his branding. He also isn't ashamed of his past. So open about his past. Bert speaks about his past, and his drinking, his parties, his experiences. That won't change and go away. Just don't be ashamed of the past, or the changes moving forward.

Steveo was different because he didn't tie his entire personality and his whole funny was not drinking or drugs, he just did that also. He was a prank and stuntman.

You can be a college student and drink 3x a week and not be one. Abuse is not how much or its effect but the mentality of the user and the reason behind using. What you mention is called physical dependence. There is also mental dependence aka situational dependence. These terms are separate from abuse and addiction.

@Wordsmith 430 lots of definitions of alcoholism. I personally was an everyday drinker but I know people that totally function and don’t drink as often but when they do there are bad repercussions. I’m not judging or trying to give you or him shit but I hope if he needs help he gets it. But to forgo health/living your best life because of “branding” is so dumb to me. Again though, not in his shoes. Hope he does what’s right for him.

If you do something every day and stop and withdrawal or find a mental or physical need for the substance you are addicted then. No one in history drank once a year and was diagnosed as a alcoholic. @@wiggitywhitefox you don't seem to understand the mentally of someone who abuses. There isn't a precise definition of alcoholism but one could agree that it's abuse, overuse or misuse. Tho you might define it as "physical dependency on gaba through fermented carbohydrates" (compared to the exact same affliction based on Xanax or gabapentin) I can speek from own experience than any ammount of alcohol that enters my body does so in misuse or abuse. Even tho I only drink once or twice a year. Abuse is a state of mentality. You can abuse work, relationships, sex and training. Alcoholism is loosely defined as any alcohol consumption that causes harm. Its not defined how much or physical dependency. Alcoholism is not the same as addiction. But they are very often correlated. Question: would you call me an alcoholic after a week at Sweden rock festival and having lucid dreams and shakes for 4 days after ?

I’m not sure that Bert realizes that making desperate excuses for his alcoholism is far worse for his brand than cleaning up his life would be.

I had to quit it was not a sustainable way of life. I've had two uncles and one aunt die in their early fifties cause they wouldn't stop drinking. One of those uncles got a liver transplant and still wouldn't quit. Don't wait till its too late Bert.

I was a bartender for 5 years and that industry consumed me and I made that my full identity. I was afraid to quit drinking thought I wouldn’t have as much fun or be as much fun with out it. Did the hardest thing and tried getting sober and did. Drinking fueled all that fear and anxiety. Once you get past all that cloudiness in your addiction I think you start to discover who you actually are and I’m sure you’ll like who you see. Feels great! Cheers y’all.

I quit 7 years ago in a similar situation as a functional drinker and still find I'm not as fun to be around as I was before, have you noticed that also? I enjoy how i physically feel and my brain feels way clearer, but i feel significantly quieter, calmer, and less funny. I don't mind so much but i did always enjoy making people laugh easier.

If I don't drink, everything I like will be irrelevant and I'll need to start from scratch, like sports, bars, lots of women. I feel like I would just be into making money all the time, which probably wouldn't be bad I guess.

I did the same thing, saying that I could see myself not drinking anymore (after about 20 years) and my friends would laugh, but it eventually just came true. I didn't need to stop, nor did I set a plan in stone to stop. I just started going out less and less until it eventually just came to an end. Sorry for rambling on, but Bert will be fine.

I'm 9 months sober. Woke up one day and quit everything cold turkey that morning. No more smokes, no more weed, no more drinking, no more pills. I still had smokes in my pocket, pills in a bottle, joints in the garage, and beer in the fridge. 20 years of intoxication. "Fukk it, I'm done" You're absolutely right, 'One day, you just realize it's time'. Honestly, it was WAY easier than I thought it would be. Didn't faze me one bit. When it's time, it's easy.

@@mftoeless1687 Weed is generally, for most people, A LOT less destructive than alcohol. Though weed addiction is real and can significantly damage peoples lives. Mainly relying on weed for any happiness and just being fine watching tv all day, basically being allowed to feel ok whilst stagnating = leads to future regrets. Also, it can lead to worsened mental health for some people, though better mental health for others, so it is all personal really. Joey Diaz smokes weed a lot after quitting, I think it is fine for most people but just be wary of its negatives. A lot of weed smokers are in a cult really who think it is amazing for everyone and has no negatives, but it can. Oh and I guess be careful that weed does not lead you to alcohol I guess, it probably wouldn't right but that just came to mind in case. You'll work it out bro! All the best.

@@mftoeless1687 I smoked a lot of weed every day for about 15 years. I was convinced it helped with creativity and improved my life in general. I quit 2 years ago due to financial reasons and my life has improved in every aspect since then. Creativity actually comes to me more naturally now. Weed can be very deceptive, as it doesn't completely destroy your life like a lot of other drugs, but it blinds you from seeing how much it is holding you back in many ways. I don't know anyone who has quit weed and have not had their life improve because of it.

There is always this massive symbolic double edged sword in most alcoholics lives. For me and most others, it would probably be that alcohol causes anxiety, but if you don't drink it, you also achieve anxiety. Bert definitely gets this also, but his fate is much more tragic because his entire career is built around being this shirtless party guy. The worst thing a comedian can do is typecast themselves and he is so deep into that character, that he will always be more tempted to go back to drinking than you or I. His character bought him a beautiful life and he probably feels like it would be selfish for his families financial success to quit drinking. He is that deep.

@@chrishandsome4267 weed makes you lazy and groggy over time. If you smoke all the time, you are limiting yourself because you are constantly in an altered state. There is absolutely no reason to smoke daily or very regularly. In the end it’s escapism from the true self. Weed is a value changing drug, a low key version of psychedelics, but daily smoking is not good. I’ve done lots of substances, LOTS.

The hardest thing about quitting alcohol is that you may have to get a new social circle and that means having no friends for a while which can be very depressing and lonely for a period of time but if you stick with it long enough you will find other things that do not involve alcohol and better meaningful relationships, it's so much better but i get why it is so hard for people at first. For me, i had to get comfortable with just being by myself for several years until i found other things to obsess on that were giving me a major payoff in return and better friendships too.

Bert has a huge circle of rich and famous friends who love him and will be sober around him and spend time with him. Stop making bs excuses that don't apply to him. None of his fans are friends. His stand up sucks. He could actually become a good comedian if he got sober.

I will be 6 years sober from alcohol next month. There’s nothing wrong with admitting you have a problem. If you can handle an occasional drink, that’s okay too. I don’t know much about Bert, but this interview gives me the vibe that he would greatly benefit from some sober time. Best wishes, guys!

It's cool to see Bert talk to an actual recovered addict, all his friends and family just enable him. Props to Steve O, such an inspiration and I wish him all the best in everything he does, you can see in his face how fast he doesn't fall for the same old excuses and stories. ofc he made it about cancel culture too.

Seriously man I've listened to hours of various podcasts with Burt, the man's an alcoholic and needs to clean up. He even claims to black out often and use sleeping pills. It's all about drinking with him and in a huge fan and I want him to get clean please.

I’m currently an alcoholic, 12 deep at 6am cause I woke up at 1pm and decided to wait a bit before getting one on today. The comments are 100% right at least for my experience. I tell myself I’m gonna quit every day and end up waking up and grabbing a beer two hours after I open my eyes. I hope he gets better, don’t wanna see Bert go down the same rode as hedberg but just with a different substance

Do it slowly. And talk to someone about the shit that's hurting you.. Be real not with the person listening to you, but be real to yourself, the person listening is just there to reflect. If it's over some drinks, cool, just don't drink your feelings & getting wasted where you are incoherent in talking about your feelings but use it if you have to, to get that shit that's buried deep in you that can't get out when you're sober, and go from there

I respect steve-o not backing down. He heard the addictive behavior as did I and instead of enabling Bert he stood fast and hard. I'm very happy to see steve-o taking his life seriously while still having a blast with life.

I love him so so much and wouldn't think any less if he quit drinking.id probably like him more.but I am an addict though

berts gonna realize soon that getting old, your body doesn’t support the party life. its not sustainable. but I understand, I got sober at 36. its hard to let go of that person you felt the most comfortable being. but it just causes more problems the longer you keep going. 1 year and 1 month sober, and ive been the most productive and happy person yet!

Chis Farley said similar things. I remember seeing this in a documentary.

Spent most of my 20s drinking (3 nights a week?). Never had a problem with it, just social partying ....etc. When my son came along at 28 I just stopped partying so much and I don't drink alone (wife doesn't drink) so I don't drink. Just showing that even though I was getting smashed out drunk 3 times a week it was only ever social. I never suffered any physical long term withdrawals (not counting hangovers - there were plenty of those) or mental ones. Lets not say "you can have a drinking problem without being an alcoholic" because all you are doing there is softening the language. If you are unable to resist drinking - you are an alcoholic. Be it physical or mental dependency - it is still a dependency on a substance.

I don’t think this is fully acurate you can absolutely have a drinking problem and not be a alcoholic I don’t drink often but I absolutely have a drinking problem anytime I drink I drink until I pass out or black out I only drink socially but I stopped beacuse of that I can stop myself of any substances without any real problem except for alcohol and coke

Bert is so not ready. You can feel it. It's kinda like me w/ weed. You don't even realize how much of your life you've wasted to that drug/bottle. It kills you slowly so you don't realize how bad it really is. Watching and learning from Steve-O in 2022 will hopefully turn the tide for both Bert and I!

Well a brand and an identity are two different things. An identity is for yourself and a brand is for everyone else.

What Bert isn’t telling you is that he has a script to Xanax. That’s how he gets through Sober October on the Rogan show. Benzos has a similar effect as alcohol in the blood. They also drastically cut down all of the negative effects of alcohol withdrawals. Steve O’ hit it on the head about Bert is scared of losing his identity if he quits alcohol.

Steve-O in my process of getting sober these podcasts are extremely helpful. The no bullshit approach to sobriety is appreciated.

If you’ve ever listened to Bert he says he deserves a “treat” anytime he does anything so he’ll never stop being a toddler. Watching him die of alcoholism in front of us is kinda crazy

Having this conversation with Steve O tells you what a narcissist Bert is. Steve O is literally killing it since getting sober. People love him even more now.

I have thought Bert to be a depressing figure for a really long time, but this is just crushing. You gotta know when to stop.

I think the longest I've gone without a drink in 9 yrs is maybe a month. The longest stretch of getting drunk pretty much everyday is about a month. Been to points over the years of borrowing money to drink. Planning days around drinking. Avoiding activities to drink. Then there's this feeling or sense (false sense maybe) that I honestly could stop making it apart of my life, that it's not "controlling" me compared to what I believea to be "true" alcoholics. I want to stop for the health benefits then again at times, I don't.

I'm just coming up 3 months sober, as well as cigarette free after drinking so heavily for years I ended up in hospital. Lying on a hospital bed with wires sticking out of you, and people rushing around puts things into perspective, very fucking quickly. The change to my life in this time has been night and day. I found a job I actually enjoy, I'm reconnecting with friends, I've returned to making music and playing guitar, and met the most wonderful woman. When you're drunk all the time you will make any excuse to validate what you're doing, but the real person you're kidding, and punishing is yourself. Stopping is hard, and the weeks after fucking sucks, but almost 3 months later, my life is fantastic, and I have no interest in returning to drinking or smoking. Don't let it get to a point where its a trip to the hospital that makes the decision for you.

Bert is making an excuse bc he's scared to face his problem. Nobody would give Bert ANY shit if he stopped drinking, everyone would be PROUD he got his shit together.
