i’m really scared i was taking tylenol pm like 3-5 times a week to help my insomnia it contains diphenhydramine which is basically benadryl. now when i take any medication my body reacts to it negatively i feel faint, difficulty focusing, chest discomfort. i have finally realized what the problem is & i stopped taking it completely. just hope my body goes back to normal.

I was addicted to diphenhydramine for 5 years. For the most part I took 300mg 3 times a day. So many things happen that were bad. My eyesight got blurry while on it. I eventually needed to get glasses. I enjoyed the sedative feeling. I rarely took enough to hallucinate but when I did it was mostly thinking I saw a spider. I didn't make me fall asleep at that dose but sometimes I would sleep 15 hours. I would get itchy all over my body. Its taken me to years of working a 12 step program to get off it. Also memory was affected. I could barely follow the thread of conversations. I've got 1 month clean now. I want back and fourth with it once getting 3 months. Just don't misuse or abuse this drug is my advice.

I didn’t read all the comments here but I’ll share my experiences with it just incase. I’ve done dph about 6 times total. 300, 360, 600, 900, 900, 800 mg. below 600 doesn’t do that much in my experience but especially once you get to 900, shit gets awful. There is so many nightmare effects. You will hear, see, feel, smell, things that are not there. I was yelling at a picture on my tv because I thought it was a person in my room who wasn’t supposed to be here. I saw my dead bunny in my arms even tho there was nothing, I had full conversations with people who weren’t there like outside my room or outside my window. There is much more side effects than that at high doses and none are pleasurable. I had to stop because the people I live with were worried I had schizophrenia because I was yelling at nothing all night long. It’s not fun or healthy to be on.

Yes I started using it to sleep for shift work. I didn't have medical insurance and I knew something was wrong long before shift work made everything much much worse. But I had bills to pay and it helped me cope with some serious personal problems. 20 years and the Benadryl hangover basically exists every single day I just rarely notice or care that much anymore. Long term side effects I suffer are: Renal damage Heart damage Memory loss (this is probably the most noticable) Tremors Loss of Balance Panic/Anxiety Dental damage

I took 200 milligrams of diphenhydramine every day for 6 months. I found that after I developed a tolerance to the diphenhydramine it would still work really well if I mixed it with 15 milligrams of melatonin. The only negative effect it had on me is that diphenhydramine doesn't have any effect on me now. Even after years of not taking it if I took 200 milligrams it wouldn't have any effect on me whereas before that would've knocked me out for 10+ hours.

I've been taking doxylamine (similar to Benardryl - sedating antihistamine) for a few years for sleep/night anxiety. Because you develop tolerance, I end up taking around 4 x Kirkland Sleep Aids (100mg). Naughty, I know. I have reduced to 0-1 per night this week with the view to stopping now. Sleep has definitely been patchier, but I wake up a lot fresher and more alert. I advise anyone to not be scared and just cut them down (then out). It might mean less sleep but there are definitely immediate up sides in the morning --- and as for dementia --- yikes, not worth it.

Within a couple of days I noticed I had increasing urinary difficulties accompanied by mild edema (swelling of feet, ankles and lower thighs). ❤ As an adult over 70. I had been using 1/2 Ibuprofen PM as a sleep aid. Recently, I tried it as a sinus drying out agent in Benadryl. The Diphenhydramine gave me some intensely weird, nightmarish dreams and my balance was WAY off 18 hours later. It is scary stuff. Almost a high but not like a high quality blended indigo. // In the future, from this video and others, I never plan on using Diphenhydramine in any manner, except for awful travel situations …. such as a downtown New York hotel in the winter or someplace in Ohio in most seasons.

Thanks for the sub! Diphenhydramine if used for longer periods of time have side effects and like I said not recommended for long term use in Insomnia.Treatment for eczema is 1) Know what the triggers are ( eg cold or dry environments, sweating, exposure to detergents, stress, anxiety) 2)keep you skin hydrated such as using emollients.Apply an emollient immediately after bathing or showering to prevent your skin from drying out as a result of water evaporation. 3) Hot baths or showers usually lasting longer than 10-15 minutes can dry the skin 4)wet dressings can help sooth the itching 4) there are safer antihistamine to use and you can discuss that with your provider 5) your provider might a short course of a local steroid to help relieve symptoms.Having said this the most important points are points 1 and 2.

I used to "hear people whispering" when I first started taking it when I worked in Retail when I had to close the mall store I worked at then had to wake up early to open up the store. Sometimes when the 10 gelcaps dont make me sleepy, I take an extra 5 of them just to feel sleepy.

  • @ThinkYourHealth

    @ThinkYourHealth

Zyrtec is a less sedating anti-histamine and preferred compared to Benadryl. Zyrtec is a second generation anti-histamine meaning a " newer model".Sleepiness can be still a side effect, however milder than Benadryl. It works well for allergies and hives. The only 3rd Generation anti-histamine OTC is Allegra, however, although supposedly less sedating, Zyrtec appears more effective than Allegra for hives and allergies. The other question to ask is why you broke out in hives. You can use the anti-histamine to help with you symptoms and it should help.If you do have repeated episodes of hives without a known cause ( such as poison ivy) you can always get skin tested by an Allergist to figure out what you are exactly allergic to.

The effects of Benadryl last for about 4-6 hours. As repeated doses of a drug are administered its plasma concentration builds up and reaches what is known as a steady state. This is when the amount of drug in the plasma has built up to a concentration level that is therapeutically effective and as long as regular doses are administered to balance the amount of drug being cleared the drug will continue to be active. The time taken to reach the steady state is about five times the half life of a drug. Drugs like Benadryl have a half life of about 7-12 hours.Once you have stopped regular use of the drug, the drug would be out within a couple of days.

Allegra and Claritin are considered newer antihistamines. One benefit of using a newer antihistamine is that they're less likely to cause drowsiness than older antihistamines.Safer than Benadryl. Most common side effect for Allegra is headache in 5-11% of cases, drowsiness only reported in 1-3 % of cases.Just to clarify, Benadryl can be used for Parkinson-like symptoms. There are many drugs which can cause Parkinson-like symptoms such as tremor, stiffness. Typically, these are anti=psychotic drugs, but even an anti-nausea drug such as Metoclopromide can Parkinson-like symptoms, as a side effect.

It's an anticholinergic, it essentially inhibits your body's reactionary reflexes, such as allergic response, motion sickness, pyramidal side effects due to other medications, lots of stuff that you really don't want to experience, however there are reactionary responses you really need, such as memory retention. If your popping those little pink pills every 4 to 6 hours for... ever. You've completely inhibited your ability to interpret information and your long term retention of new information is seriously compromised. An occasional dose for a seriously uncomfortable situation IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOU BRAIN DEAD. It's going to make your brain unaware?/Not care about any problems THAT DAY. It's when the next day there's a problem, and again, into habitual usage that will make your subconscious nonobservant of...everything. Just doesn't matter. As a treatment for an urgent situation, its a God send. Nobody's daily life is THAT urgent.

I took iv Benadryl 3 times a week during my dialysis treatments for 4yrs. I haven’t taken it since my renal transplant which was 10 yrs ago. Is the damage Benadryl did to my body in that time reversed or reversible ?? I had no clue Benadryl was so dangerous to take long term. No drs or nurses tell you that it can cause cognitive problems and such. Now I am freaking out.

I have been taking Benadryl for 20 years (averaging 250 mg to sleep) and I wished I had NEVER started doing this because it's basically the hardest drug I've even tried to quit (I mean I was able to quit opioids after years of addiction but Benadryl... no.) I have renal damage, heart damage, and my serotonin production will never recover.

Reign, thank you for sharing your experience, especially for people who are using this drug as a sleeping aid.Like I said in this video and anyone reading this comment it SHOULD NOT BE USED S A SLEEPING AID, especially in older adults. Please do seek the help from an addiction specialist so that you can be titrated off the medication.

@@ThinkYourHealth I have tried to get an effective treatment plan worked out with doctors and therapist. But the problem is I have SPS. When you put Benadryl addiction next to a neuromuscular disorder, people don't seem to really take it all that seriously. We've done all the prescribed sleep aids and they only make the SPS worst and they don't actually make me all that sleepy. I have to maintain a sleep schedule to prevent the SPS fatigue spasms. Doctors get to the point that they can't actually give me any other options. This is way more complicated than people think. I've had people laugh at me when they find out about it... People just don't understand OTCs are addictive especially if you have and underlying condition that you can't afford treatment for. I hate this part of my life, literally hate it.

@@reigndelacore2060 I’ve been taking it for about 20 years as well for anxiety and as a sleep aid. Anytime I tried to stop taking it, I became really sick (withdrawal pains and vomiting). I don’t regularly see a doctor because I have no other health problems. I’m embarrassed and not sure where to turn.

The Beers Criteria is a leading source of expert information about potentially inappropriate medications in older adults. Older adults per WHO definition are usually defined as above the age of 60 .Certain medications can have they can have adverse effects in older adults.Providers can easily overlook misuse of these drugs, as many are readily available to patients who purchase over the counter (OTC). As an example, Beers criteria identifies first-generation antihistamines’ ability to block receptors and increase the risks of dementia in older adults. Having Benadryl in a household is relatively common-yet, its long-term effects are not usually a consideration.
