Ben Wallace Defense on Kevin Garnett - 2008 ECSF Game 7

Спорт

Even past his prime, Big Ben had a huge impact on defense. Ben does great D on KG in Game 7, but the Cavs fall short in spite of his great defense.

Ben wasn't fully appreciated when he played and has certainly not gotten his correct due as an all time great defender. He HAS to be top 10 post defender of all time during prime stretch.....and my favorite of all....he did it without tactics, he didn't need to give cheap hits or fake tough talk. He just had one thing on his mind....OUT WORK YOU

Yeah howard had a couple good years in Orlando but he was NEVER a better defender than Big Ben Wallace. Not even on his best day.

Before acquiring Ben Wallace - the 2008 Cavs allowed 98.2 ppg through 55 games - this would be ranked 11th in the league In the 22 regular season games that Ben Wallace played with the Cavs - the 2008 Cavs allowed 91.6 ppg - this would be ranked 4th in the league In the 2008 playoffs, with Ben Wallace starting every game - the 2008 Cavs allowed 87.8 ppg - this was the lowest ppg allowed by any team in the playoffs Ben Wallace at age 33 singlehandedly turned around the 2008 Cavs from a solid, but not great defense to the best defense in ppg allowed during the playoffs

Li Qin These are the 2008 league standings at the time of the Cavs' 55th game - the last game before acquiring Ben Wallace. www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/index.cgi?month=2&day=22&year=2008 You will see that the Cavs allowed 98.2 ppg at that time under the PA/G column. To compare how this would rank with the league averages at the season's end, you can go to this link www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2008.html and scroll down to "opponent stats" and check the PTS/G column. These are the team stats from the 2008 Playoffs www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/NBA_2008.html You will see that the 2008 Cavs were number 1 in points allowed amongst all playoff teams at at 87.8 ppg Another good fact to remember is that the Cavs' only 2 double-digit losses in the 2008 Playoffs came in the 2 games that Ben Wallace played his least amount of minutes for those playoffs Game 3 vs Wizards Game 2 vs Celtics Unfortunately I don't know of any shortcut to find these following stats In the 22 regular season games that Ben Wallace played with the Cavs - the 2008 Cavs allowed 91.6 ppg - this would be ranked 4th in the league What I did was go to Ben Wallace's 2008 game log www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/wallabe01/gamelog/2008/ and click the date of every game he played with the Cavs. Then I added up the combined points of the 2008 Cavs opponents in the 22 games that Ben played, and divided them by 22 you should get 2015 total points which is 91.59 or 91.6 ppg allowed when divided by 22

Some of the most skilled players in NBA history, play now. Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul, Lebron James. Although I agree, the big men are not as skilled, but the game has changed, there's more emphasis on the three ball, I what that has done is diminish the importance of a back-to-basket centers. However guard play on average has improved and has made the game more exciting, the pace is faster. Believe me as a Knicks fan, nothing worse than Knicks vs Pacers and Heat matchups, ugly games. Detroit bad boys too. I think it is important to be fair, rather than just nostalgic, the quality of basketball is good. The standard of what it takes to be a pro basketball player now is so much higher than in the past. I forgot to mention Kwahi Leonard, very skilled player.

XGames you cant play 100% on defense and offense as a starter. Not enough energy to do it. He was a defensive and rebounding specialist that used most of his energy doing those 2 things. Most as in 70%+. If he was more active on offense he would have been more worn out and would have not played as good defense. MJ is said to be a great defender but watch the games and Pippen or somebody else was usually guarding the top scorer. Coach Jackson did not want MJ to get worn out on defense. Thats why teams have defensive specialists like Ben Wallace, Michael Cooper, Rodman, Bowen and etc. Very few players can be all over guys on defense and be top scorer and even 2 scorer. Jerry West could do it. Even if it was his greatest PG rival Oscar Robertson. You can more easily do it of course if the player you guard is just a shooter. But if he is a all around scorer or fast guy it uses up way more energy to keep up. The Rodmans, Horace Grants of basketball free up top 2 scorers on the teams somewhat.

Man! On D, Wallace was a giant amongst men. He was 6'8 tops, but defended like he was 7 ft tall. That's the thing about KG, ,if you get in his chest he becomes just an above average player. Chris Bosh should have taken notes.

People over estimate the height advantage thing. The advantage of being 7ft 0 vs a 6ft 9 guy is very little. Also it does not account for arm length. I'm 6ft 3 with 6ft 6 man standing reach. Its because of my arm length. I have Zion Williamson standing reach and 5ft 10 guys have blocked me sometimes. Also a 5ft 6 guy completely shut me down before. Even with the standing reach advantage it does not account for mental smarts. I can guard 6ft 9 guys with 9ft standing reaches and shut them down inside by using my head. I held a 6ft 9 and 250ish man to 4 points in 2 gamss to 15. The guy before me in the game before got 9 points all 1s dropped on him as if he was not there. Im not great defender and not even very good too.

Also it does not account for vertical jump too. Just ask Patrick Ewing that was 7ft 0 that was blocked by 5ft 3 Muggsie Bogues. Their measurements are what they told the NBA.

At rebounding he was crap after Pistons. Defense was still there. He was not the A version of Ben Wallace anymore. He was the C version and his rebounding was gone and his scoring dropped more. He was basically a defensive specialist and not a defensive and rebounding specialist anymore. Best place to put him would be bench player and play him about 20 minutes to degrade offense. But as a starter at this time he hurts your team more than helps it because his rebounding is not there and Kevin Garnett outrebounded him as if Ben Wallace was a average rebounder.

He has all kinds of records defensivley but the most impressive is how little fouling he actually did considering him going after every offensive play! In my opinion he's up there with the best defenders/rebounders of all time(Russell, Chamberlain, Rodman, Mutombo)
