Ben Elton has his say on the 'resurgence' of Liz Truss | LBC

British comedian Ben Elton joins Andrew Marr and shares his thoughts on the 'resurgence' of former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
Truss is currently on a book tour to promote her 'political memoir' titled Ten Years to Save the West.' Appearing on LBC with Iain Dale, she made a number of bold statements, including urging the Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey to resign, branding Net Zero as 'economic suicide', and claiming critics of her mini-budget are merely trying to 'smear' her.
Speaking on Truss, Elton says the ex-PM is driven by 'ego' and that he finds her attempts to return to power as 'depressing to the point where it's truly sad.'
Elton also addresses where he stands on 'cancel culture' in comedy at the moment, stressing that 'nobody is trying to close comedians down' and that 'people have the right not to be exposed to hate.'

I'm Press. Not at national or international level, but Press nonetheless. I despise Liz - truly - but the fact is, her resurgence is relevant and worth reporting on, if only to raise the alarm about someone nuttier than a KP factory busying herself trying to get in with largely but not only American Far Right extremists, which will have a knock-on impact of giving her political cachet with the kind of ageing white English voters who like the Tories' overt cruelty and corruption, but are a bit perturbed by how Brown some of the party's top brass are. Enter Liz, a resurgent great white hope for such voters, ready to say any empty, trite, airheaded thing that will curry favour with the Tory base, and sweep her back into some kind of prominent position again. That's why she's worth covering and reporting on - out of duty, and to raise the alarm, not just sit placidly by and do Nothing about her incremental inching and worming her way back into power over millions of people.

The issue lies in what James O'Brien describes quite brilliantly in his latest book. The strange symbiotic ecosystem we seem to have developed which enables politicians to lie and promote themselves as arbiters of truth. We need journalists to adhere to stricter principles of journalist rigor and hold these people to account. It is right that we stop cancelling people unless they promote hate and give hate speeches, but we shouldn't give people like Truss an hour of self promotion without challenging her substantively.

But the most important factor for populists, charlatans, influencers, etc to be ever in the public eye is the abject failure of journalists to fact-check them, expose their lies and hold them to account. That failure also includes Marr, who loves softball questions and a non-confrontational atmosphere.

There is something very sick about the Tory party in that it provides an avenue for the mentally disturbed narcissist oddities such as Truss to find a public stage to manifest their delusional picture of their perceived self-importance. While Labour and the Libs occasionally have such miscreants, the Tories have such disastrous headliners almost weekly. The other parties are far from perfect, but for anyone who cares about the future of our nation, democracy, and the progress of our globally interdependent humanity, use your vote wisely, and vote strategically to prevent and/or get rid of any tory candidate - that is the priority for the sake of us all and our shared future.

One way of improving the quality of political debate would be to make lying in parliament a serious offence with serious consequences. Elected politicians should be setting an example to the electorate, not demonstrating the political benefit of lying through ones teeth with no repercussions.

Ben Elton hasn't got any answers - this is "I hope a generation of politicians will come up that don't do this stuff" - really? How is that going to work when the last decades have proved how "this stuff" actually works, at least so far as winning power. Still, I'd rather listen to him promote his tour than Liz Truss promote her book.
