BELTED KINGFISHER In The UK Megaceryle alcyon

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Native to North America, only 4 Belted Kingfishers have EVER been recorded in the UK and 3 of them were on the Isle of Scilly and not mainland UK. You can imagine the amount of excitement it generated when this stunning male was reported in Lancashire, England, UK ! 👀 For almost every UK birder, this was a lifer... a 'once in a lifetime' chance to see this stunning bird.
It finally settled along the River Darwen at Roach Bridge, near Salmesbury in Lancashire, UK. Unfortunately, you had to use around 150 metres of a farmers field to get to where you could stand to try and catch a glimpse of it. I say unfortunately, because the farmer was a greedy guy who charged each person £10 per visit. I heard from one guy that it took him 11 visits before he saw the Kingfisher and the farmer got him for his £10 - 10 times! I even heard a story where 3 guys paid in the morning and didn't see it, so they went elsewhere for a few hours and when they returned, they were asked for another £10. The Kingfisher stayed in the area for around seven weeks and the word is that over 10,000 birders went to try and see it! (most 3 or 4 times)
I was lucky (but determined) in that it only cost me £10 to capture the footage. I was there at 6.20am and there were already 20 or so birders there. At least 120 birders came and went that day and the bird finally showed up at 6.20pm and there were only a few of us left.
If anyone who went to see the bird at Roach Bridge reads this, it would be interesting to hear if the farmer 'got you' too ?

Hi Dave, I hope you and Sue are having a great season and are fit and well. I was so determined that if the bird showed, I'd be there to see it and hopefully capture some video. I'm glad i stayed through till dark too. Most of the pictures taken by hordes of birders had branches in the way as the Kingfisher was well up the riverside with no access and sat into the tree, fishing from the other side of branches. It was a real treat to see it fly towards me and calling really loudly. (sadly I didn't get that on film... I had to hurredly move a few feet, lol) But it settled on a branch with a decent view of it and there were only a few late birders there at this point. The farmer was a right one, appearing from over a hill unexpectedly a few times a day to collect his £10's, grrr. It was funny to see a few birders hiding and trying to dodge him, lol. Thank you as always for watching, my good friends. 👍◕‿◕

Hello Anita, thank you for your continued support and always nice comments. The word is that the farmer made a massive £60,000. Somebody reported him to the tax man and the farmer said he gave most of it to his favorite charities, but he could not show evidence of this and would not name the so called charities. I do not believe him at all myself. Have a lovely weekend my dear friend. 👍◕‿◕

Hello again Don, yes, the farmer did very well, the greedy sod. I could do with something equally as rare landing in my garden, lol. (I would never charge a fee tbh). Lythan St. Annes is a lovely place to stay a few days, or even live. mostly nice and relaxing with lots of the on street cafes etc, as I'm sure you found out. That was something, to see such a rare bird. You had great stamina to wait all day to see it! Great capture in the end. Hello my friend, indeed the farmer was a right one and a big argumentative guy too! Nobody knows, or hasn't mentioned what happened to the bird. @@LivinginTheNewForest Hello again, thanks for the link to the live webcam. I've had a look and seen the size of the chicks. We finally found the woodland a Goshawk is using and I was wondering how big the chicks might be. I was hoping to perhaps see the adults hunting around the woodland or returning with food to it... it is very small and their food source won't all be in there. Thanks again my friend. 👍◕‿◕

Hello my friend, Kingfishers are almost always on rivers, canals, ponds etc and if you are seldom in places with these, and perhaps sat for a while, you may never see one. Hi Stuart, I heard of a few guys who fell down a steep banking and one who smashed his camera when he fell... that was the few weeks it was around the River Ribble, up from Brockholes. So I didn't fancy that with a tripod and camera to carry. I put location because the bird dissappeared 9 months ago! I never give out a location unless the bird is well gone and highly unlikely to ever return. And with the Osprey, I was actually there on the day he was sadly killed. There were only a handful of birders there at the time and none of them were trying to get too close for a picture. Everyone stayed down by the River. It was actually one person who tried to get close to take a picture on his phone. He was not a birder at all. Those below shouted at him to stop but he didn't. :( I actually filmed the Osprey dive, catch and eat his last meal that day. If you want to watch that... and read a little more, here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n66XuJeQdrbfY8Y.html I absolutely agree with you that locations of birds should be kept quiet until they are well gone, or not at all if it is their nesting site. 👍◕‿◕
