Gosh. My Dad used to take us to Belle Vue in the late 70’s. I remember ‘gold top’ Willie Harrison but our favourite was always Stuart Smith 391! We met him in the pits after a race once and was a member of his fan-club. Such a nice chap. Fantastic memories 😊

Brilliant and amazingly rare footage of 60s stock car racing

Brilliant footage....I'll be in that crowd, sat on the wall at the back of the small terrace on the Hyde Road bend. I'd be 9 or 10 at the time...used to go to my aunties in Gorton and then to Belle Vue later with my dad and sister....memories.

use to go as a kid stuart smith 351 if i remenber right few years after this in the 70s priceless saturday nights and peter collins and ivan mauger friday nights speedway prob why mum was skint paying for all our enjoyments priceless

@studmarks1 This is Monday 15th April meeting 1963 , and is the British open Championship, the first race shown is heat 2 won by Alan Heap 88, the second race is probably heat 3 won by Aubrey Leighton.

Dad at 50 sec ... second row inside #233 and again being towed off (the second car) heat winner #88 Alan Heap. As Alan only won one race in 63 at B/V it makes it April 15th. The Final winner Alan Wardropper #245. The footage is from the Stockcar British Open Championship ..... I was four years old

I can vouch that the video is late 1963 or early 1964 based on my age and that of my cousins in the video, plus that is what the original tape reel is clearly marked. I agree the sound effects are a little cheesy... I was trying to avoid a silent movie but I had a limited amount of audio effects to work with. I would have preferred some generic stock car sounds if anyone wants to share some that would be great. PS My dad took this movie, and this is all there is of the Belle Vue Speedway.

Went. there in 1961/62, my wife was picked out of the spectators to present the Trophy to the winner, perhap's it was her blond hair,!!
