When Belle was a teenager she was held under house arrest by a Union officer at the Matthew Ritchey home in Newtonia Mo. She played piano for her captors all night. They held her to keep her from warning her brother and his solders that they had set a trap to capture them. When daylight came they thought they had held her long enough to prevent her from warning them. On her way to her horse she broke off switches before she mounted. She took a shortcut across a mountain and still got there in time to warn them. G.W. Miller of the 101 ranch also had a store there for a few years before moving to Kansas. The Ritchey home is still there.

Back in the 1930's, a man that was called Old Golddigger that used to charge people to see the grave. Back then, the way to enter the property was to the north from the dirt road. The original tomb stone was chipped away from people.

The first time I went there, you had to come in on that dirt road. The bridges were scary, to say the least. You climbed up the bank to a fence and old gate. Was a jar for donations. The local who showed it to me, said an old woman owned it. Early 1990’s.

I was hired by the owner of the property to clear some of the brush and small trees at the property a couple years ago at the home site and around the well. It’s a pretty place.

Nice video, Rhett. A couple of stories about Belle: Fort Smith was the nearest “big” town. It is about 65 miles east of Younger’s Bend. Most business was done there. Belle would commonly ride from her cabin to Fort Smith, side-saddle, IN ONE DAY. She was tough! You are correct in saying she only stole horses (maybe a little cattle), and harbored outlaws. Regardless, of this, she had quite the reputation as being dangerous. During one period of time, there was a local politician who was doing some self promotion at Belle’s expense. “That woman doesn’t belong on the street!” Or something to that order. One day, while in town, Belle chanced to meet this fellow on the street. “You’re so and so, right?” He stammered “yes.” “You’ve been spreading bad things about me, right?” “Y-y-yes.” By now, he was sure he was about to be shot. “You go around to the back of my horse.” He did. “Raise his tail.” He did. “Kiss it.” She was never bothered again! Pearl was a prostitute in Fort Smith, and later became a madame. She had a house of ill repute on “the row,” near the river. She lived in a nice neighborhood, far away from there. Tried to keep her name and occupation quiet. I believe the front window of the house had a star surrounded by a pearl necklace etched into it. The row burned many years ago, and there is one brick building standing. It was a nice steakhouse at one time, Miss Pearl’s I believe was the name.

It's too bad people cant leave graves alone. It would have been nice to see it in better shape and even her home I had heard of her so thanks for all the info. Boy what a history we have had in the old west of The U.S.A.

It's a real problem with people messing with headstones and graves of outlaws. It's really the reason Frank James was cremated and then later buried with his wife. He knew the troubles with his brother Jesse. Thank you for watching.

Wow! What a story! Belle certainly was an interesting woman, to say the least. I might look into trying to find a copy of the movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. I used to love her in the old show "Bewitched" and I'm very curious to see her performance as Belle Starr. Looks like it was a "made for TV" movie so I have no idea if it was ever released on DVD or not but I'm gonna check around! Great video, Rhetty! I'm really surprised there's no evidence left of her cabin. Judging by the size of the place in the photos you'd think something would be left of it somewhere. I bet you're right -- if you dig down deep enough, there might be old remnants hidden, perhaps even a pile of field-stones from an old, collapsed chimney and/or fireplace. Too bad it's on Private Property 'cause a little excavating would be fun! Thanks for sharing this! Good stuff!!! Take care, Valerie

I do archaeology & wouldn't I love to be in on that dig!Re Belle,I somehow pictured her as brunette,not blond.Would dearly like to see Elizabeth portray her though.And the Younger boys shown as they should be.It drives me crazy when they change their ages.The Long Riders for example,great idea but so far from the truth the elastic snapped!

I wish they could build a sturdy fence around the grave site, it would help some to keep out vandals, and such. Maybe they should charge a small fee for viewing the grave site, this would help with upkeep, and ward off unseemly people. At this rate there won't be much left of it in a few years. Loved the story, and narration you always nail it. Thank you.

Nice video, I really enjoyed that. Something you might look into - There's a cool story (true) about a Cherokee I believe that was accused of murder in Talequah, and he holed up in the hills around Talequah somewhere and they fought it out (tribal police, or us marshals) and eventually hauled a cannon up to his house to blow it up, and I think he still escaped. His whole family was killed I believe. It involved Judge Parker, and I may have my stories crossed, but something about a cherokee court house and that court house is still there just off highway 412. It's a brick building. I came across the story of this outlaw when I was doing some genealogy research. Seems like they finally caught him and killed him, and then found out he was innocent. I looked it up, Ned Christie was his name.

Yes Ned Christie is a big one and I will definitely be doing a story on him as well as some other Cherokee. I have a lot to cover out that way and I have barely scratched the surface. There really is a lot of interesting history in that area. Thank you for watching!

I have a friend that is a descendant of Ned Christie. I have been to his grave. He was killed not far from there. Research his story and you will learn of one of worst miscarriages of justice in history.

I'm actually trying to research that cabin. A lot of things involving her are difficult to research. Facts get mixed in with fiction. Some say the cabin is being used elsewhere. Some say it was pushed down the hill. Others say it was used as fencing material. If it is being used as a cabin somewhere then I will definitely do a story on it. It's not Belle's cabin. It's much more modern and larger. Her original cabin was just a few steps away from her grave. I'm not sure what the new cabin is used for.

My best friends' grandfather grew up not far from the dam. He knew Belle and said he was at a dance in Whitefield and she was there. Her last husband was the jealous type and came in there drunk wearing his gun , threatened the guy she was dancing with. She whipped him with her riding quirte and took his gun.

@@Mvlt1 Sorry I missed your first post. Yes is the answer. Her daughter was ran out of Ft. Smith by a Ladies Social Group for running a brothel. She moved out west and kept her identity secret. Raised a family and her neighbors never knew she was Belle's daughter until after her death. I knew a man that was her daughter's great grandson. He died in his forties from a heart attack.

Another great video Rhetty I was hoping that you would do a video on Belle Starr someday. I'm catching up on videos I missed out on. Was in a car accident a couple weeks ago and lost my phone so just now got out of the hospital and catching up on the videos I missed. I was wondering what exactly ended up happening to her kids? If they left Oklahoma or if they lived out the rest of their lives somewhere close by.

I'm sorry to hear about your car wreck. Sounds like you were in a bad one. I hope you are doing better now. As far as the kids. Ed becomes a lawman and gets killed at age 25 here in Oklahoma. You do such fabulous videos. Thank you for showing the path. We're debating about going out toward Arkansas and Oklahoma for next years vacation and I was looking to see how the path to the grave was to see if my wife was able to do it. I'll show her your video and see what she thinks. It may be a solo hike for me. How long do you think it would take to hike up and back?

I have a friend that owns the local Dairy shack here in S MO named Cole Younger, he is named after this Cole who is his I believe 3 or 4th cousin. The Youngers James along with the Quantrill's came through S. Mo quite often stayin a lot in caves here

There is a road in Newton County Arkansas called The Twisted Lady Trail, for Belle Starr. Don't know if she ever hung out around Jasper Ar.or not, I have been told a lot of Outlaws did.

I used to live in Siloam Springs and there are a lot of stories around that area about Belle Starr. she used to hang out around West Siloam Springs and vicinity. She also hung out around a town south of Siloam Springs by the name of Cincinnati. Also while living there I became friends with two young men that were cousins that were descended from the youngers they lived on the Illinois River it was fun to go down to their place and go swimming in the river. Also there is a story passed down in my family that my great-great uncle Thomas Crow ran with the youngers and is buried in Texas but I have not been able to find anything on that at all so whether it's true or not I doubt it cuz there's other stories in my family that could be not true. For instance my mother's grandmother is supposed to be 100% Cherokee I haven't been able to find any Cherokee blood in her at all she is always listed as white and all the census. Also she was adopted when she was a baby her. These parents found her along the trail and took her and then adopted her and they're the ones that said she was Cherokee so who knows. But if they were saying she was Cherokee then why didn't they say that in the census? They said that she was born in 1860 while they were moving to Arkansas from either Kentucky or Tennessee. thank you for posting this is very educational as you are also sir. It's tough to say on your great grandmother. There was a time when it was really shameful to be Native of any tribe. Many didn't want to list it if they could get away it. So fast forward to now there are descendants with no benefits. It's more common than you might think. As far as the outlaws that is also difficult to say. Sometimes it is hard to research those that might have tried it once and decided it wasn't for them. Or maybe they were forced to do something once. My grandfather (on my mothers side) was known for telling tales, as grandfathers often do. He had always said that we were related to Belle Star, and we all took that with a grin and just let him tell his tales. As it turns out, my brother got into the dna history a few years ago, and we are realted to Belle Star, very distantly but grandpa wasn't stringing us along on that one

What a shame graves are treated this way. It makes sense that Jim was the one who killed Belle since they seemed to have an explosive marriage. I noticed that her Easton has worn away compared to what it was like when new.. Time and elements.. Rest in Peace Belle.. Btw.. her current headstone, though worn by time appears to be the same one in the old photos in your video. Someone mentioned it was a different one..

I remember visiting visiting that grave site when I was a kid there used to be a fence around it back in the 80s I got pictures of it

Just yesterday I learned she’s my great-great-great-great-great aunt. Ever since then I’ve been very curious about her story.

It is maintained. Takes someone's money and time to make those signs and that bridge as well as the rock parking lot. We also have to realize the signs near the grave with the photos. I have no idea how many markers she has had but the one that is there is certainly not the original. You can see the difference in some of the old photos I had in the video. Some of those had bad chippings in them too. So that takes money too. I think they do a lot more for her than what other outlaws and lawmen get. Thank you for watching!

I have heard that there is a book written by Flossie, (Belle's grandchild by Pearl). If you know any info. on this please let me know. I am sure it has long been out of print, and very hard to find. Thanks for all you do.

There are several theories on how it got it's name but nobody really knows for sure. I have heard it was because some Canadians camped out on a section of it. Some say from the French, some say from two different Native tribes and others say Spanish. I don't know if we will ever know the answer. As it comes thru Oklahoma City it gets renamed to the Oklahoma River. That was a recent change and I did a little story on the man who led that idea and why. Thank you for watching Harry!

5:36. That town south east of Dallas is Balch Springs where the Shirley's moved to. It was a stage coach stop. The last person she beat the spit out of, killed her. She used a qwert, is what I've been told.

It wasn't a good legacy but she did leave one. Her life of crime whether big or small ended up biting her all thru her life.

I don't get it, you have a 11kk views, all kinds of people saying how much they appreciate you and enjoying the video, that you put up, but no thumbs up on the like button. Thank you I appreciate you watching and commenting as well. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I turned of the like and dislike buttons simply because I had some trolls. I would release a video and before it was out 30 seconds it would have 6 dislikes. I know it was discourage people from watching. Didn't hurt me. I want those as tools that I use to see what the views really think of it without being influenced by others as to what they should hit.

So basically a horse thief but a lady horse thief. Great video 👍
