Years ago my family took a road trip to the Star House, still in good shape. It was the reunion powwow of Quanah & Parker descendants! We sat on the porch enjoying the festivities, a great honor ⭐

I commend you for your outstanding dedication to the history of the past American native peoples, they lived through some really hard times and I'm glad to hear his family still live on.What was done to these people was a travesty , driven from their land and to despair. What about the horrors and cruelty they subjected to other tribes and settlers. The Comanche were savage people. thank god we subjugated them .and later civilised them.

Interesting he was very smart and ahead of his time.

He really was. Amazing how his mother had trouble adjusting back to the white culture even though she was white. Then he comes along and makes the transition happen and makes the most of it for himself, his family and his people.

There really are some nice antiques in that house. I'm sure the metal bed frame is fine but the wood items may be pretty damaged from the flood. It's sad to see the history going like that but on the other hand we would not have had it at all if it wasn't for the family saving it. Thank you for watching!

I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones that show the history of Oklahoma and the people who shaped it. I visited Geronimo's grave a few years back but didn't know about Quanah's gave when we were there. I think I need to make another trip to Ft. Sill to pay my respects to this great man. That is very interesting history on Quanah Parker. As always you did an exceptional job of researching and presenting your information. This is a period in time that is rich with historical facts. One photo you showed with Quanah Parker and President Teddy Roosevelt in the same photo was taken when Roosevelt and a party came to witness an Oklahoman named Jack Abernathy who caught wolves.Abernathy caught wolves by chasing them down on horseback, jumping off on them and running his fist down their throats so they couldn't bite. Roosevelt was so impressed with Abernathy that he made him a deputy U.S. Marshal in Oklahoma. As fascinating as Jack Abernathy is the the story of how his two young sons traveled the country alone on horseback at only 9 and 5 yrs. of age is worth checking into. Those two boys were fearless and lived a lifetime in a very short time. Another very interesting part of your story was the mention of the battle of "Adobe Walls". This was actually the second battle, but became famous because of an Army scout, buffalo hunter named William "Billy" Dixon. Dixon carried a 45-70 caliber Sharps rifle. The Comanche's were on a rise about 1500 yards above the small adobe building. Dixon was known as being an expert marksman and knew his 45-70 would not shoot the required distance. Dixon borrowed a 50-90 caliber Sharps from another buffalo hunter and took careful aim. Dixon was able to knock a brave off his horse and kill him from 1500 yards. The Comanche's realized what kind of fire power the buffalo hunters had and they could not get close enough to penetrate the thick adobe walls of the building so they left. This was one of only two shots that were documented that were over 1000 yards. The other was in SW Montana. My memory is not as good as it used to be and I would have to check some books to get his name. I saw a few years ago where people with original Sharps rifles tried to hit a target the size of a horse from 1500yards. The target from that distance was just a very small dot. There were about a dozen people shooting and they were shooting 45-70's and 50-90's. After all day shooting one young boy hit the target with a 50-90. These people didn't shoot buffalo all day long for a living and did not have to make the shot for survival like both men who are documented shooting that distance. I believe it is safe to say not too many people could make that shot.

I plan on having more on the Abernathy story this year. I wanted to cover them last year and then the Pandemic happened. One of the places I wanted to go to help tell the story had been closed when I had planned on doing it. From the father to the sons it really is quite a story all the way around. Teddy was fascinated with the Old West all of it's wild stories. He even had quite the inauguration with some chiefs from various tribes. 1500 yards is an incredible shot especially with open sites. I knew about that shot but I'm not familiar with the one in Montana. Thank you for watching James!

My great-grandfather lived many years of his life in the Lawton/Fort Sill area and he knew Quanah Parker. He was a very young man and Quanah was an old man but he was my great-grandfathers friend.

Great video, one thing though, recent research, has shown, that the buffalo were wiped out not just hunting. A bigger factor was Spanish Tick fever. They compared the locations of the Texas Cattle drives. The migration of the buffalo. The number of skins shipped. Then the volume of bones shipped. Allowed for 20% loss due to hunting for food. Their conclusion was Tick Fever, was the major cause of the the population crash

I'm sure there were some natural factors in as well. Those ticks as well as other diseases. Especially coming from cattle and horses. But there was an unbelievable amount of hunting done. Many of the famous lawmen did some Buffalo hunting. Some were also just for sport for no reason at all. Sad to think about but Oklahoma is just now recovering a little of those herds thanks to some people helping out on private herds. Thank you for watching Kirk!

It is sad to see it happen. On the other hand it would have been long gone if it wasn't for Mr. Gibson's family. I know many people think just because a structure is on the National Register of Historic Places it is saved but it is simply not true. Still takes people continuing to earn revenue to keep it up as well as hands to physically do the work.

He does look 100% Comanche by blood but he is not. But technically since his mother was a white and forced to be Comanche he is 100% whether he looks it or not. He was an extraordinary man and both he and his mother have a fascinating story that is unique. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Excellent. I read about Cynthia Ann and Quanah in HS, always been fascinated by her adaptation to Commanch life. Olive Oatman is another interesting story. Many ppl captured. Some survived and adapted, many died. I hope some way can be found to save that house.

Quanah Parker is so wonderful especially when I'm family members to him

My family and I are mostly white descendants of Quanah Parker and ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to learn more about my heritage thank you❤️

Great video regarding Quanah. The Comanche Nation was definitely a force to be reckoned with. The warriors could shoot off a dozen arrows riding on horseback at top speed before a person could reload their single-shot guns! I have the book called "Empire Of The Summer Moon" regarding the life of Quanah, his white captive mother, Cynthia Ann Parker, and the Comanche way of life.

What a fascinating story. I wish the Parker Star house could be saved. I wonder if Quanah was able to adapt to life on the reservation a little easier knowing he had a place in both the white man's world and his native world. He held out as long as he could but no game to eat and starvation makes it pretty obvious you need to adapt or die. He chose not to make do, but to be successful. It's a lesson we probably could all learn by his example. Obviously he was a special and gifted man. Thanks for telling his story.

Here at the Natinonal Ranching and Heritage in Lubbock , we have items that belonged to Quanah , Their not on display right now, and I think at one time, They looked into trying to get the 5 star house, but it was in such bad shape and they wanted way to much for it

yes they do, not sure when their gonna put them back up, Ill let u know, we had the decendants of Quanah in here before we took the items down so they could perform a ceremony, we had them in here before putting them up and before taking it down, kinda a blessing ceramony

It's a sad story on both sides. But he does have that right since it is privately owned. Some of the backstory is that his father literally died working on that property. That plays into some of the value sentimental wise. Hopefully it can be saved somehow. Thank you for watching Gwen.

Thank you for the tour and info of Quana Parker's history. He was one tough man. It runs in his family, Jim Mitchell was a great grandson of Quana, Jim his grandson was a tough man as well. Jim is a First Generation Black Belt under the first man to open a Karate studio in America in 1954, his name was Ed Parker, Not related. Jim's name is on The Ed Parker Family tree of Black Belts in Kenpo Karate along with hundreds of Champions Ed Parker promoted. Jim is with Jesus now but his Son runs the Dojo and is a 10th Degree Black Belt and Weapons Expert, go figure, lol, just like Great Granddad himself. I too am on Ed Parker's Family Tree a second Generation Black Belt since 1977, and that's how I met Quana's great grandson because of MMA. Like to see Quana's grandson in action? Let me know. Thanks again my friend.

The book and the movie "The Searchers" is suppose to be based on his mother, with artistic license of course.

Why not the Star House? Sadly it seems once again the Native Americans get the short end. At least his grave is honored . Thanks for sharing

It is sad to see it disappear but it's what happens when it is privately owned and he has every right to do as he pleases. It's wrapped up in q lot of sentimental feelings as well as blood, sweat and death. As far as the Commanche Nation we have to remember that one of Quannah's wives sold it to this family and if they hadn't then the government would have just knocked it down and would have been gone many decades ago. The Commanche nation has since expressed interest in it but they have also stated that they have better things to do with their money. The real loss here is the history for all. Not many realize that this can still happen despite having it on the National Register of Historic Places. Thank you for watching.

I'm not sure on the exactly mileage but I would guess around 5 but no more than 10. There is a firing range you can see on Ft Sill if you look at Google Satellite and that is where it was. You can also pan around and see this Star House where it is now and all the other structures around it. The army certainly would have demolished it. Thank you for watching Claudia!

I don't know the exact number on that either. He had a lot of wives and there area lot of descendants. It's a pretty large family.

@@RhettyforHistory I’m guessing that he had about 7 or 8 wives, and about 25 children, a few were adopted. Probably at least 20 biological children. I can see why women liked him, he’s extremely handsome and charismatic! Strong, smart and wise beyond his time!

I totally agree, Gates should invest and set up a company to save this piece of history and a trust to preserve this history.

I had always heard of Quanah Parker and the abduction of his mother. However I was surprised it happened when it did because I was always under the impression her abduction was much later, like right before the Civil War...only off by 20 years.

Was wondering if you ever heard of Goss cemetery in Harper County Kansas? On Find a grave it only has 2 memorials but, the photo shows many headstones? Looks like an interesting cemetery. Wish more of the memorials were listed. Is it a private spot??

Imagine inflation a house that took $ 2000.00 to build and now a $1,000,000.00 estimated restoration cost.

What happened to the Indians is another sad part of American history. When will we learn to treat each other with respect??!!! How sad that those historical houses are rotting away 😢

There are quite a few historic structures on that old amusement park. They all would have been destroyed if the family hadn't saved them. But I do wish the Star House and Frank James house could be saved. Thank you for watching!

I was surprised that a half white man would be a chief. He sure looked all Native American. This was very interesting, hope that home is saved

He was never elected by his people he was selected by the U.S. Government. I'm sure there were people upset about that. Not an unusual practice for the time period in several of the native nations. Thank you for watching Lois!

Oh it was everything. Their entire way of life, history and existence as a free people was annihilated. Sad to think about that happening. Every Native Nation has a sad and tragic story where things were taken and they were forced to be somewhere and someone else.

Thank you for the help on that. I filmed this a year ago when I went thru the apache cemeteries and they had sage in them as well. At that time I didn't realize what those were. They were in little material pouches in the Apache cemeteries versus the little branches in the Comanche burial sites.

@@RhettyforHistory -The only reason I knew, is because a Choctaw friend of mine burns sage in her house to run off bad spirits. 👍🏼👍🏼

If I had the money I would do anything to save it! I saw a video of it that was made about three months ago and it’s on its last days . The United States government should step in & work with the owner to save it! I thinks it’s the least we could do, considering all that was taken from the American Indians since our Country was formed . It’s a travesty that more hasn’t been done . :(

It is sad to see that this isn't being saved and sadly it's days are numbered. But I'm not sure I want to see the government step in and spend money to get this back up. It would cost millions. And then where do you put it? Those have all been part of the issues for it. So many structures have similar fates such as these. We also have to remember that Quannah was the last Commanche Chief but he was actually the only one. It's really not part of the culture and he was appointed by the white government to be that. So yes he is important and yes it is culture. But the Commanche are very much a vibrant nation and their are looking to the future. Many of them do not want to see their money spent on this house and would rather see it spent on their people. Those who love history no matter who you are or what nation are the ones who lose out. I know that the family descendants have an interest in it so it is certainly a loss for them as well.
