The first "new" marker you read...Eva Mae Dalton Whipple was married to John Whipple. John was a pharmacist in Mead, Kansas. They lived in a very small home built near the banks of a small creek on the edge of town. The barn for the house was down on flat ground by the creek. Eva's outlaw brothers and associates could approach the barn under cover, stable their horses, then enter the house via a tunnel. The site is now a museum. The tunnel, initially just a small, rough, precarious affair, was enlarged and made safe for the visiting public. It is a novel experience to be in the barn (now the visitor center and museum), enter the tunnel, and come out of a closet in the basement of the house. Well worth a trip to Mead, Kansas. I was particularly impressed with one of the museum exhibits...a horse-hair halter hand-made by Emmett Dalton while he was in prison. A final note... word of advice... don't order the chicken-fried steak at the truck stop cafe out on the highway near Mead.

I just found some vids that show the walk thru the tunnel and museum and house. Really cool, the tunnel was reinforced with stone way back in 1940 by the WPA, Id never heard of that historical site though, thanks!

Emmett Daltons life is the stuff of legend. He survived about 24Gunshot wounds, every single one deadly per se. He was a relic of another era when He died in the late 30s or esrly 40s. He tried to do good the second after that tragic gunfight was over. He is one of the most underrated characters in American History.

It seems Emmett Dalton had quite an interesting life. He was very fortunate he wasn't killed in Coffeyville like his brothers. Emmett sowed his wild oats and spent his time in prison before he was married. Once married Emmett made a living by writing tales of his outlaw days, working as a lawman and being a specialist on wild west movies. This would seem like a lifetime for most people but then Emmett and his wife moved to California and both worked as building contractors. Emmit certainly lived a colorful life and wore many hats. I like your helper you had on this tour. My wife and I raised two daughters of our own and they each have three boys. Thank you for the information about Emmett. It was very interesting that he worked as a lawman. My great grandfather wrote that many men would hop back and forth over the line. Many men did whatever they had to do to survive regardless if it was legal or not. They certainly wouldn't hire an outlaw ex-con as a lawman today.

You're right about that. In this time period there wasn't really an established law like there is now. It's interesting to see how it was built at the same time it could be really reckless being like that. Even the famed lawman Wyatt Earp got in trouble in Oklahoma stealing horses. I didn't know he was in any films, I just watched Man of the desert in which he played the good guy. Hard to imagine all that he went through, all the changes in his life. I noticed it looked like he had a little trouble walking but had no problems on the horse. Imagine being shot over 20 times then having to do 14 years in prison. That is adding insult to injury. Great video thanks for uploading it for us.

I'm sure he probably did have some issues for the rest of his life from those wounds but I never have seen anything talking about it. I can't imagine being shot that many times and being able to walk much less survive. Thank you for watching Dan!

In one way you can see how the Daltons wanted to pull something off the James-Younger Gang had not but on the other hand you would have thought they would have learned from their relatives mistakes. Another great video! I was doing a bit of research on Norman OK and thought about your channel! The first interesting fact: The first woman ever to be put on the FBI’s most-wanted list was captured in Norman. The second possible video content would be the 1918 Griffin Memorial fire. They found the mass grave of the victims and they put up a memorial with the names etc. You might have already known about these but just like to support channels I love to watch!

My grandfather George W Dalton second cousin to Emmett had 2 children, my mother Mary and Verlin. My Grandpa Dalton took his son Verlin age 35 to Emmett's funeral and later told my mother how those smooth hands of Emmett could shoot and kill people; my mother told me this store and others about the Dalton Boys many years later. Sure Bob Dalton had his reasons for turning outlaw, but its always for the wrong reasons, maybe easy money.

Rhetty- the Daltons have history in this part of California also. They lived for a time in Livingston and Turlock area. One of the brothers, Bill, is buried in cemetery in Turlock Ca.

You're right about that. Bill was shot and killed here in Oklahoma but his wife transported his remains and had him buried in there cemetery. He is or at least was in an unmarked grave. It's interesting because Emmett died in California and then was transported back to Oklahoma for burial. Thank you for watching!

@@RhettyforHistory I am really tuned in. The father of Belle Starts daughter Pearl was prolly Cole Younger. Belle real last name was Shirley, a native American name. Her birth name was Myra Maybelle Shirley. I have cousins related to her. I am related to James. The Dalton's, youngers and James are a real related mixing pot. Belle Starr had them at her Texas home when they were laying Low. Take care.

I didn't realize Shirley was Native American. I thought it was English. As far as I knew she was white but of course marries Sam Starr as her husband after Jim Reed was killed who was her previous husband. Same was Cherokee. After Sam was killed she married his adoptive brother Jim July. There is a long standing rumor on whether or not Pearl was Cole's daughter. I'm not sure we will ever know for sure. Belle has many things about her that blur between fact and fiction. Probably more so than any other figure in the old west

Fantastic video and history Rhetty, as a kid I really liked the Lucky Luke comic books, it was far later I learned the Dalton's really existed. I guess it wasn't Emmett's time to go being shot 23 times. Thank you for your video's and stories .

Great job with the photos, music, and filming! Interesting stories; I think the Mom had a small cabin so all of her kids couldn’t move back in with her. The babysitting service was ingenious and with the bars you could feed the kids peanuts 🥜. 😂

The round metal piece on the chair in the cabin goes at the top of the stove pipe (against the wall ) where it would exit the building to vent the smoke :) Very interesting video :)

I did not know Emmet did any acting, I read one of his books years ago. I'm not at all positive, but the gizmo in the chair looks to be a flu ring that would go around the pipe where it went into the chimney. I like the old two eye stove, my mother used one to can on and my aunt had one for heat until she passed away in 1983.

I had watched a documentary about the Dalton gang a few years back. I knew that Emmett done some acting but I didn't know how much. I always wondered if there older brother getting killed was what caused them to go over to the wrong side of the law.

It did somewhat. They sort of worked for their brother helping him about a little. When he died they thought they could remain on the job. They were doing the job but not getting paid and that made them mad. Their brother Frank who was killed was not sent his back pay either since he was dead. They were not going to be paid and were not allowed to stay on the job so that left them with doing some shady things. Thank you for watching!

There's a story that dates back to the 1930s after Emmett died. Supposedly he is not buried there, but instead he was cremated and his ashes were spread on the grave of his brothers Bob and Grat.

hi RHETTY. i noticed on crimes of the week, march 22nd issue. they reported that the grave of an early pioneer was decicrated.. the graveyard is called Flint Hill and is in alabama. the pioneer was called SAMUEL JONES. have you seen this report? or got any more imfomation about it. do you think this could be relic hunting, of a sort, though exstream and disgusting, or was it just plain valdalism.

How sad and despicable is that!? I had not heard about this until you mentioned it so I just now Googled it and read about it. Last year they said someone disturbed the headstone and vandalized it. This time they removed the cement slab covering the grave and then the remains. I sure hope they find those responsible for this and prosecute them as much as possible. Thank you for telling me about that news story.

That moss may look pretty but it eats away at the stone. You can use a paint stirring stick to remove it.

I'm odd but I prefer to not do any rubbing on stones because friction wears the stones down. So I'm really only for cleaning them if they are in extreme conditions and someone has permission. I'm also against shaving cream, chalk, pencil, charcoal and crayon rubbings that some people do because of the same reasons.

I do know that Bill Tilghman made his film because he saw how Emmett was going around telling his story and he was afraid of the way Hollywood was portraying how it was. Bill had trouble getting his movie to be played in theaters. They told him it needed someone well known as an actor such as Tom Mix. Bill refused to do that. Tom Mix really seemed to be interested in these old legends.

That is true. He was on the set in the background not as an actor. He did aspire to be one so he spoke to him and tried to absorb what he could.

Great video. Have you been to the Comecos Cemetery in Granite, Oklahoma. According to what I have seen, the graves are all fake.

I have but it was around 10 years ago or something. I need to go back and make a video. They are all fake and entertaining. I think that was done by a granite company there.

@@RhettyforHistory I have just seen articles and videos about it. I have not been there. I have been to boot hill in Tombstone which is a real cemetery. However, some of the markers are funny. The one that I remember says "Here lies Lester Moore, 4 slugs from a 44, no less, no more"
