I absolutely loved this short 3 part series. Its still a few years till i get my first mal. At 50 and a bunch of training now under my belt i finally think i am ready to get the dog i have wanted for 20 years but was not willing to get until my skills and situation were up to the challenge. Really appreciate all the info you put out

I researched the breed for like a year before getting my dog. Back then I was still ignorant on reputable breeding, health tests, titling, etc. My pup (profile pic) is actually a Mal/GSD. Medium to high energy with a beautiful shut off switch😊. Single mom, full time military on a shift schedule. I actually took 15 days off work to dedicate to him and it made a world of difference. My son helped lots as well.

You helped me so much (a little over a year ago) when we first adopted our "German Shepherd Mix." She looks like a Belgian Malinois so I was so happy when I found your videos. The night we brought her home I was so worried and had left you a comment on one of your videos. You commented back and helped me so much!!! Thank you again--a year later. With that being said, this is such a great video to help realize the demands and what to expect your first 24 hours. So many will benefit from this information. A year ago, you answered my comment in 24 hours and helped calm my nerves--and, to this day, I appreciate that kind message/comment. Your videos over the past year have helped us learn so much. Because of you, we definitely learned that training is so important! We have a professional trainer--- still a year later---thanks to your videos--- and will continue to keep a trainer because it has made all the difference in the world. This video is wonderful! The first 24 hours with a new dog/puppy is definitely a lot of work but your video is so informative of what to expect and how to manage it. Love your videos! Thanks again!

I have a Aussie puppy that I think isn't to far off from the neediness of a malinois. So far the only dog that will put up with her rough play has been a husky. Yeah most people should get a Labrador or Golden Retriever, it's exhausting. But hey, after my Aussie I think I can probably handle a border collie or a malinois now.

I love this video. There are so many "Sunshine Videos" that just don't tell the whole truth. I don't want to know how many Belgian Shepherds are abandoned or even die each year for not telling people the truth. Videos like this are likely to save the lives of many Malinois.

@Jeff K A Malinois IS a Belgian Shepherd. The behavior and need of my working line Tervueren ist the same as the behavior and the need of a Malinois. Why? Because a Tervueren is nothing other than a long coated Malinois. However, a distinction has to be made between working line and show line and because of there are more working line Malinois, while there are more show line dogs in the three other variants of the Belgian Shepherd, it often looks as if they are different dogs. But the truth is that, as far as bahavior and needs are concerned, there exists only a difference between the working line and the show line. Here is a video from Robert Cabral : kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWh5uNqcgti2l5s.html

Sadly, I only agree with about 30% of what you suggest. I have 2 mals going on 10 years who have never been in a crate and rarely are on a leash. Yes training is all about consistency and my dogs only want to please me so that is why they have so much freedom. I have a unique lifestyle that allows them to be with me all of the time. I don't think you should own a Malinois unless this is the case or something similar. Robert Cabral preaches that no one should own 2 which is the pot calling the kettle black so take his advice with a grain of salt. He also has said he has to pick his female up to avoid her starting a fight if a strange dog runs up so there are 2 reasons I don't watch him anymore. My female went off on a couple of dogs when she was a jealous puppy and I corrected that behavior so it only happened twice. I also saw a little old lady walk up to my car and my 80lb male was hanging halfway out the window going nuts but when she stuck her hand out she started petting him it made me smile. A well trained dog can sense a threat if they are well trained and socialized.

I’m a long time subscriber and I love Maligator Mom’s content and videos, but the comment about not getting a puppy if you work full time kind of rubbed me the wrong way a little. Most people, myself included, are not lucky enough to be able to be home all day and do need to work a typical 8 hour job. I don’t think only wealthy people should be able to experience the joy of having dogs. I really hope this was only directed towards extreme high-drive working dogs like Mals! I have a working German Shepherd puppy and a collie, and my partner and I usually take turns coming home at lunch to take them out so they don’t end up going too long without potty breaks. A lot of us ‘only have a few hours to spend’ with our dogs in the evenings…ours seem happy and we take them with us whenever we can and go on lots of adventures. It is doable if you’re dedicated.

I deleted my original comment since I do agree that Malinois MUST have someone with them throughout the day as puppies. Mine have plenty of acreage, but as puppies, I had them each with a daily caretaker if I was unavailable. The purchase price is just the beginning when it comes to costs associated with owning high drive dogs, but quality time is the most costly input to Mal ownership. They own you.

  • @Venessialato

    @Venessialato

    2 жыл бұрын

@@PowderedMunchkins How long did you have the caretaker for? That's actually a really great idea for people who work outside of home. We don't have acreage as we live in a major city, but we're in the PNW so we hike 30 miles pretty much every weekend and are very active in our off hours during the week too. We don't have kids and don't plan to, so have a good bit of free time. Usually our dog is konked out at the end of the day, but she isn't a Mal, either. Another thing that is interesting to me is that there's so much gatekeeping with the Malinois breed but I don't hear it as much (or at all, or the elitism really) with the Dutchie. Working line GSDs are no joke either but you don't see as much of the 'You cannot have a life of any sort outside of your dog! Nor can you leave the house, ever! And forget having a job!' (Not saying that Maligator Mom implied this, at all. In fact I think I've seen her rant about people who do) Would you recommend the Dutchie over the Mal? Mals are my dream dog but I'm paranoid that I might not be able to give one the best life since I'm not home all the time and don't live in a huge space. We do participate in bite club and dog sports, though.

Also, to emphasize your point on being the right person for this breed... I know a trainer who rescued a malinois from a family who left the dog in a crate for 10 hours a day and the dog broke all its teeth trying to bust out of the crate. They didn't want to pay for the medical bills so this trainer rescued the dog and paid for the dental work which unfortunately meant removing all the teeth. Now he gives mouth hugs, all gum. But he has a purpose working and being stimulated as a demo dog for her business.

Hi! What's your opinion about introducing the puppy to an existing dog? I have a Jack Russell Terrier, and I'm gonna get a Malinois puppy. My JRT is very easy going, she's a really sweet dog, no aggression or bad behavior of any way, she's energic, but not when she know is not play time, so I'm very confident that they will get along great. Should I introduce on to another and let them do their things toghether, or should I limit their time, and have the Malinois puppy spend their awake time with me instead of me and the JRT? Thanks!

I have been very curious on your puppy feeding technique. You say you hand feed them while they are puppies so you can do many things like making them aware you are the source of food, training etc. My question is two fold.. 1. How many cups are you feeding them and are you just giving them little bit a food several times a day? at certain times? 2. What food are you using for your puppy and hold long would you stick to puppy food until you change to adult? let me know and I will use your codes to:)

Do you have the funds to invest in boarding? Can you take time off to bond with pup? I took 15 days off when I first got my dog. Then I enlisted the help of a friend (neighbor) to take him out several times a day while I was at work. Best dog I ever had but I invested the time in quality training. Very demanding first year but I’m reaping the benefits now.

There are a lot of other good dog breeds to choose from who might fit into your lifestyle. Every breed has different needs. My brother would have never bought his Malinois if he was still working. He is retired, but financially he has invested more time, effort, and money than in his previous dogs which include Dobermans, an Akita, and a Mastiff breed. He has done reasonably well in training his dog but now he has a professional trainer because he is not sure he is meeting all of his dog's needs. He would have never taken on this responsibility if he was still working. Watching other people with their trained dogs is a lot different than doing the actual work. They do not like being alone for long hours. They are really attached to their owners and they do not like being separated from them. I watch my brother's dog for him sometimes and he is constantly looking for him. He has nine acres for the dog to run on and his trainer is helping him build an obstacle course for him. He is not crated except at night but he can get out of the crate. His dog has slept in his crate since he was a puppy and he puts himself into the crate. I love his dog and dog-sit for him all the time but I could never own one.

Hard to tell if you're tired through all the make up :/ many good points. But I found that with my Mal she needed to pee every hour. So crating was not happening because I had to get her outside often. In fact I haven't crated her until 6 months and she was just fine. with 3 days she was going in the crate with out trouble. She is high drive and if left bored she will find something to chew whether its her toys or not. otherwise I agree with you. raising a Mal puppy is not for hte feint of heart or the overly busy person who ignores their dog until they're ready to play or whatever.

She's a pretty lady, should skip the lip botox though-it just looks silly. I've never seen a lip fill that made the person look better than before and I've always wondered if these people actually look at themselves as a whole or just that they have thinning lips etc and hyper focus on fixing that. We don't crate during the day at all usually but we're outside working 12-15 hours a day on our homestead so we have her with us working all day. She takes naps every couple hours, but they are short and she's back up with fire in her @ss lol. This is our first Mal and I will honestly say, I don't think people with jobs that take them away for more than a couple hours at a time can be good owners without a ton of help coming in from someone. This is the most physically and Intellectually demanding dog, I can't imagine trying to keep her happy if we were just an average family in a city. Our homestead is 50 acres in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains and this is definitely the right life for this breed. They're amazing if you are the right person in the right situation but I personally think they're not the breed for most people just wanting a pet and thinking 'I can probably provide enough activity to keep it happy'. We are insanely active and our girl could still run circles around us, you're right, they're not for the feint of heart lol.

My biggest concern with how you crate your digs and the new puppies is that it not good to keep water from any dog for long times and I have heared you say that you keep them in crates for two hours and overnight they have to have a source of water even if it is ice cubes you cannot judge how much water your dogs take in before you crate them you may think you know but unless you measure each time they drink you cannot tell me you know
