Please also advocate for all the Malinois in shelters or rescues! Four months ago I adopted Maxi, a 14-month-old Belgian Malinois from a local shelter. So far she's incredibly intelligent, loves to work and learn, we work hard but always end exercises on a positive, she also loves to nap with me as I watch a movie or read and loves my other dog. She has some fear aggression but that is slowly passing as she builds trust in me, interacts with people using a strict protocol and learns more exercises that build confidence. She's also shown interest in bite work. While high prey drive is indicative of the Malinois, there are Malinois that are bite work flunkies and end up in shelters because they're couch potatoes with a low drive, not suited for police work, dog sports or Ring sports. Everyday pet quality Malinois absolutely do exist, some of these lower drive dogs just want to nap next to you while you read or watch TV. There are a more medium drive Malinois, these dogs are often better suited to scent work activities or other sports like dock diving, agility etc. You might still need to keep the dog mentally stimulated and work them with physical exercises it's just that they are not the high drive over the top working line prey drive type that are typical of the breed. This is why if a person can't handle a Malinois exhibiting a high prey drive then please adopt an adult from a Malinois rescue, they will match the dog's personality to the human and with an adult dog, you will know what your dog's personality will be.

Agreed. I just got an emergency call on a 14mnth old Mali who spent her entire life in a crate & they only got her out long enough to beat the crap out of her because they were going to make a 'guard dog' . I took her on the spot. The first 2days were long & a little rough & she has no reason to trust a human. She has been with me a month now & were doing long line work, playing agility, obedience & hiking. she's still a bit of a spook but a totally different pup. The past 2 nights she has curled up on the bed with me with her head ever so gently touching mine. I understand this level of work with this level of pup is not for everyone & we have a ways to go, but I adore this girl & wouldn't give her up for anything.

@@thomasd9237 Well done!! Your message was a bright spot in my day. I just found out my mom just passed away. My advice is to move your hands slow around her until she realizes the hand isa good thing. Andy Krueger, and Michael Ellis are two of the best Malinois trainers. Look through Miracle K9 Training with David Tirpak, I have learned so much from these three trainers.

The first dog I got after leaving home was from pet store (not something I would recommend), but not something I ever regretted. My puppy loved everyone and everything. I worked for a horse trainer and my baby was leading horses in to the barn when she was only a few months old. I would just drop the horse's lead and she would grab it and lead the horse into the barn. All the horses would just drop their head and follow wherever my pup led them, no matter how high strung the horse was (we had a couple x-racehorses around). When I had kids, they were her babies. I never had to worry about her smothering them, but I knew that no one would ever harm my kids. I worked nights so I would sleep in most days. My son was always up before me and wanting to head out of the apartment to go and see grandma (who lived across the hall). My pupper always slept on the mat in front of the door. I would get up to see my son sleeping on my dog and she wouldn't move until I picked him up off her ... no matter how much she had to go outside. The best dog I ever had ... she was a shepherd/border collie cross (I know, not a Mal, but still awesome) ... kind of think there was a bit of malamute in there somewhere though (back talked like no one's business). My dream is to have Malinios ... but my lifestyle has to seriously change for that to happen. Great video.

I'm 5th generation malinois owner and 3th generation belgian ring trainer. The most important selection part is missing. 1st decide what you want to do with your dog 2nd look for bloodlines that do this work 3th within these lines look for a male and female that do the work the way you like it. 4th check the performances of their ancestors. 5th test their sound sentivity and the way they recuperate 6th if you have done your homework it comes down to personal preference while choosing the pup. My 2 criteria - the one that comes out sleepy bites my trousers and fals asleep while still holding on - the smallest of the litter. Tey heve never let me down

Thank you! Another great addition to your three part series. Before watching this video, I don’t think I would have been able to identify the subtle differences in “drive”. I see this benefits for both, the perspective new owner and the pup, as it allows you to fine tune your needs with the pups unique personality. I’m sure not everyone that has a Malinois is wanting the full blown protection working dog version (although much is common across the breed), I much prefer my Mal’s moderately high, less “intense” personality. She fits perfectly into our active lifestyle without being obnoxious. Thanks for bringing us along on this informative and interesting journey. Can’t wait for next week.

Thank you for your amazing video's! I'm going to pick a malinois pup at november 6th, so can't wait! My dad has trained malinois as k9 policedogs for over 40 yrs and I grew up with this great breed. Now that my kids are 6 and 9, I'm going for a lovely malinois male, not as police dog, but as a sportive companion of the family. I am going to do some sports with him, like agility or some sort. So nice to see what to look for in the pup, as we normally always chose the pup with the highest drives.

Gorgeous dogs! I love their obedience, as they look up at the trainer. When our Shepkita did this, I said, “Quit looking at me, watch where you’re going.” My husband, the trainer…🙄 I allowed Maximillion to lolly gag, just like me. 💙 I’m pretty sure I, being the omega, would never have an awesome Malinois, my husband loved them. I’m on my own, and I’d like a dog that will give the presence of authority and protect me from Bear, Coyotes, and people with nefarious intentions. Thanks for the video! irrEgardless, of what dog I get, picking a good puppy is stellar.

My dog (working line GSD) was one of the chill pups in the litter, she's a great family pet for an active home. We do obedience and fun gundog classes with her, but I don't think she'd excel at bitesports or anything serious. Her sister however spent our entire meeting biting my boyfriend, she's a full time search and rescue dog now. So, so important to get the right dog for the right home.

I'm trying to choose a puppy from a litter currently and was wondering if low drive means low for everything or just low prey drive. Would a dog like that still have just as much motivation for activities such as obedience and agility or nosework if you just don't want one for bitework but want a motivated dog for those other purposes? Also, if a puppy is not engaging with it's littermates as much as the others does that indicate shyness or just more of a calm temperament?

Personally I would be looking for a SD type of drive dog while my bf is looking for the guard/ protection aspect of it. In short a low and high drive dog since SD’s can’t show any signs of agressive forms or tendencies to bite while on duty obviously off is another matter for play 😂 while a protector/ guard a good bite hold would be needed and that high drive desired for sure. In short both would be working dogs but for diffrent fields of work. Thankfully we both are also very active so exercise I don’t see being an issue between the two of us

Thank you for saying there's no shame in asking for a companion mal. They DO exist even in working lines. Dogs are biological beings, not copycat products off of a conveyor belt. THat doesn't mean it's going to be a lab in a Mal costume either; just maybe not the pup that hangs off of your pants 24/7 (although come to think of it some labs will do that too if you let them).
