The worst thing about living through this experience was definitely the uncertainty. I didn’t know if it was a plane bombing, a gas line exploding, and earth quake and if there was going to be another. Fortunately I was lucky and survived un-injured but a lot weren’t as lucky as me. I pray for the victims and their families.

Fun(ish) fact: this explosion is estimated to have an explosion yield of 1.1 kilotons (1,100 tons) of TNT. For reference, the largest conventional bomb the MOAB yielded 11 tons of TNT, and the nuke dropped on Hiroshima yielded 15 kilotons (15,000 tons). So the Beirut explosion is actually hugely. I would’ve shit my pants if I saw that, so props to the father who thought about his family first.

Every time I see a video of the explosion, I'm so thankful that my aunt, uncle and cousin were out of the country at the time. Their flat, only a few blocks from the port was severely damaged but nobody was hurt.

They are on Beirut new Sea-Side Park and Cornish...they were not in harms was of anything other than the shockwave and even much of that would have been blocked by the small buildings between them and the blast as they were far enough away.

They were probably fine, however that blast definitely left their ears ringing and probably knocked them from their bikes. Hopefully the children had some trauma counseling, but kids are pretty hardy when it comes to physical trauma.

They were unless someone hit their head on the pavement from the shockwave. They were not as close as you think. they are on Beirut new Sea-Side Park and Cornish if you want to look the street up. its close to a mile away and those white buildings would have protected them from much of the remaining shockwave.

How desensitized we have become... Something explodes and is obviously pretty big, so you grab the phone and start recording while walking towards whatever blew up.

I've approximately geolocated the place where this family was at when the big explosion took place at about 33.9071, 35.5049 -- near the water and near the Beirut New Seaside Park and Cornish which, if I'm right, is about 1.3km from the blast so the family should have been OK. Scary though...

Don't mean to be a downer but the shockwave could travel much further than that for the amount of explosives involved in that critical detonation and it in itself is a significant killer.

@@Beanzz231 -- Yeah, the shockwave would likely travel much further than the distance to the family -- but the intensity of it would be low enough to be non lethal. At that distance the power of the shockwave would be low enough to be easily survivable. There would likely be windows broken at that distance, but the effect on people standing in the open would be unlikely to harm anyone unless they were in marginal health.

Incredible how many angles there are and how many people where filming at that moment.

There was a clip of people right on the dock of where the explosion was, which is a lot closer

@@bucky822 clearly thay are not very far, if you see how the fireball size. Other coments claim the distance is 1.3 km or 0.8 miles

I worked at a plant that used ammonium nitrate. I had no idea it was this dangerous. But still, I’ve learned it takes a flame, AN and fuel to ignite. Where did the large amounts of fuel come from?

It wasn't a plant that blew up, it was a storage facility used by the government. I believe all the fertilizer they were storing was confiscated from a ship (or ships). They were already warned by people that they were putting too much of it in the same spot and that this type of scenario might happen. Government officials, like most in all countries, couldn't give 2 shits about it and so when a small fire broke out, everything fucking blew up.

As another commentor said the fireworks led to the explosion. The fireworks were ignited by sparks from a worker doing some welding.

I think he meant the fuel as in the mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil is a powerful explosive, but AN alone just burns. But in this case she blew.

I cant find anything to say it had been mixed into ANFO. Everyone just says the AN had not been stored properly. Maybe gas in the smoke or something. I dont know

People in comments be like : "How dare he run away from that explosion and save his and his two kids life?! Dayum man, I was having such a great time watching this from my sofa sipping coffee"

I literally can't imagine the terror. I've had dreams about seeing mushroom clouds in the distance and feeling the panic of "omg it really just happened, after all these years of being told about nuclear war etc." Obviously, this wasn't on that scale but you gotta think the terror and uncertainty of what could come next (as you're with your children riding bikes nonetheless) must have been similar. I thank my lucky stars that I got blessed with my particular geographic position in life, and I empathize as much as I can with people less fortunate.

ive had that dream too... Seeing devastation in the distance and calling my wife and kids... I would say Ill see you on the other side and I know we will find each other because I wont ever stop looking.

My uncle was a medical doctor who also an armed force. When he came back from United Nation peace keeper duty he bring us lot of delicious chocolate from Libanon ❤

At first thought they were far, but then realize they're so close... 😮

I thought the first plume was the explosion, wasn't prepared for the end. they were much closer than I expected!

As a father he did the right thing to stop recording and take his kids to safety.
