Being Single in India

For years and years, the institution of marriage has been very important in Indian society. But in recent years, there’s a different trend that is being noticed- there has been a rise in the number of people who are opting to remain single. The reasons are many- some like the freedom that comes with it, some have decided to wait until they find the right person, no matter how long it takes and some have decided to stay single after a bad experience with a partner/spouse.
But Being single in India Sucks!
Singles are being discriminated against in all spheres- “Bachelors/Spinsters are not allowed” is something we very commonly see in housing societies
In this video, we discuss these forms of discrimination faced by single people and try to understand what drives the society to discriminate against them in this way.

The bad behavior is not limited to only singles. When I lived in mumbai, the married couple living in the flat below ours fought almost everyday. Their screaming and yelling would always be audible to us from balconies and bathroom vents. Not only that, they would occasionally smoke in the bathrooms which would bother our family all the time. It really depends on what kind of person you are rather than your relationship status.

When confronted her parents, it was found that she showed severe schizophrenic tendencies after she had my brother. Her condition became worse in the family. Marriage is not the key to solve anything in fact it destroys you a lot of times as it is India & it is especially demanding from couples & the whole marriage system here is just... shit. So yeah it does depend on what kind of person you are. Single or married, if you behave like sh*t then you are a sh*t

Majority of unmarried men in India don't have a gf. Because, of gender segregation it's difficult for them to approach girls. They become nervous and fear rejection. They too want to get into a relationship, but don't have guts to express their feelings. So, they end up being single. Its not like girls approach boys. @@gargeebasak9648

Being a girl and single at 32, I stopped going out just because I don't want to answer "why am being single at this age". Why can't the society understand that life is not just about getting married and having kids. When I say that am not interested in marriage, people keep asking me "who will take care of you when you're old?". Doesnt that mean people are having kids, only because they want someone to take care of them when they are old. Isn't selfish to have kids and asking them to take care of us in our old-age? They must have other things to do. Why bother them with our problems at that point. It's better to have some sort of savings and depend on oneself rather asking others to take care of ourselves. If India had health care system like NHS or social security pensions like developed countries, then most people wouldn't be worried about all these issues of marriage and old age care.

Finally someone not only acknowledged our existence but also shared our problems in a respectful way. Thanks. This is my experience too. I did remember when I was trying to find a flat in Gurgaon, the owner blatantly asked me "do you have a boyfriend? If you do then don't search for property in this area, this is family area" I was shocked. Not because he said this, I am kind of used to these questions while searching property. I was more shocked because that whole area was full of PGs with single people, I literally found a flat just 3 houses away from his house in that cute "Family area". And this was just one of the struggles of being single. The society pressure thing is a whole another level of insanity. When you are single in your 30s, the only thing that comes to everyone's mind is that either we are hiding our relationship status or we have some kind of illness. My male colleagues also face the same judgements but it is more hard for women because society always associates it with your character (I mean they don't leave married women too, it is easy to declare someone's character wrong when you have big mouth) it is sooooo annoying. First of all I am not hiding anything. And second, if someone is in that situation, it is none of your business. They always say "you are getting old, marry soon otherwise you won't get the right partner". As we have a lack of people in this country to find the one. The family pressure, constant pokes from friends makes it hard to hang out with them. The relatives who I see maybe twice a year also poke daily saying "who will take care of you when you will get old", well NOT YOU for sure. Wow so much care! Where are these relatives when you need them? Probably busy in poking someone else's family I guess. My point is there is nothing wrong in keeping our mental peace as a priority. Maybe we are still figuring things out, maybe someone wants to focus just on their career, maybe they have family or financial problems, maybe they are still deciding, maybe they will marry in future or maybe they won't. Maybe someone doesn't have their shit together to take on new responsibility or maybe someone doesn't have any of these problems and still wants to be single. Who knows. You found your balance in marriage, I found my balance in being single. As simple as that.

I understand both the spectrum as i am both single and a landlord. My flat is valued at close to 1 cr. When it came to renting out i felt i can't risk my fully furnished apartment and i wished for responsible tenants. A married couple, especially the ones with children, can be considered as highly probable of being responsible. In my 20s, i was single, not that mature and responsible, and if i were a tenant, i would not have likely rented the flat to myself 😂😂. But it doesn't mean all singles are irresponsible. Mohak said it right, its all a game of probability, and landlords don't want to take risks.

Bachelors do play loud music. Host parties! Invite a lot of people. I agree with Anubhav Bassi actually. "4 single ladko ko kuch sath me krna hi nahi chahiye!" I have lived in societies where bachelors were living and the amount of nuisance is unbearable! Indians have a nasty habit of staring. The sight of four guys staring gives me chills. I would be much more comfortable with a group which has people of all genders. Also, not getting married is a sign of commitment phobia, a non-adjusting attitude. These are FACTS! A lot of people don't realise that, after you crossed the 30 year old mark, the parents and relatives don't ask you about getting married. But this time, the friends you had start getting distanced since they have their own set of friends who are married. So the married people hangout with other married people. And at that time you basically start loosing friends or lost friends already. But you need to actively look for friendship by joining different activities and groups. Or you will more likely to end up becoming depressed.

We maintained the house pretty well, paid all the rents in time and even our landlord said that he did not expect such a clean home after it was handed to a tenant. However the society pressurized our owner so that he asks us to go because we had friends coming over during weekends. It was said that many shoes were scattered outside our apartment and that was not aesthetic. That was the only reason. 😝 Moreover, we had some surprise visits from other apartment owners who would barge inside our house to check if someone is smoking or consuming any other objectionable material. Nothing was found ever but still we had to vacate.

I have a video suggestion. Many companies don't allow female employees to add their parents to office health insurance, if they do then an extra premium is charged. According to the policy a female employee can only add her husband and kids to the policy at no extra cost, whereas as a male employee can choose to add either his parents or his wife and kids. I say this is discriminatory. I have seen this happen at TCS. A video would be appreciated.

As an owner of a house given for rent as well as neighbour to single people on rent. I can understand when tenants prefer only married couple and avoid single men/women. Single people have less responsibility and they have the mindset of "we are doing you a favour by renting your house". They are reckless ,keeps the house dirty most of the time and fight with other tenants frequently. This causes the other tenants who are a family to avoid our house because of bachelor's living in other floors. Worst happens when the tenants fails to pay their rent on time or absconds without paying rent, electricity bill and water bill. Single people also fall in the trap of debt, drinking and other activites which not only affects them but the neighbours as well. My neighbouring tenant throw their beer bottles into our bin in front of our house which caused our bin to break and nobody is willing to take responsibility of the same. The owner of my neighbouring house swore on his life that he would keep each house empty if need be but will never give it to a bachelor again due to repeated problems as mentioned above. What needs to change is not the "family only" trend but the mindset of single people who need to act responsibly. This is why owner take an interview to asses them.

It makes no difference to your body if it is by the roadside or being given a state funeral. It makes no difference to you whether people remember you or forget you because you don't exist anymore. All these emotional connections you make about dying surrounded by loved ones or being remembered after death....all these are pointless attachments. They matter only in your imagination. The lack of domestic skills is a major problem that in my opinion, could be made worse because of the way our families are set up these days. My theory is that, for the longest time, while growing up we are not expected to do any household chores because 'mummy is there' and you just focus on your studies. we may end up not lifting a finger in our formative years in our rather self centred bubbles of studies & career which, though important is not the only aspect of life. (Not trying to generalise here, but this is just a theory based on what I've observed. I have also seen some lovely bachelor homes so I 'm not saying these are facts) We are not taught to cook and clean, do our laundry, manage finances & time, making the house look presentable etc. Then suddenly we graduate college, and move away for jobs and we don't know how to do basic housekeeping, nor have the money in our early career to afford a housekeeper. We aren't taught at schools, because we're all being pushed to get the best marks, because the competition and pressure is so high. After school also we come back home and study or run from class to class right from 6th / 7th for that extra high level JEE class, or just tuition classes for what is already taught in school. And being in India I think this problem is worse if you're a boy.. You are not expected to do much household chores growing up, and if you move out you're left with no basic life skills and could end up falling sick because of bad eating habits or unclean living conditions, therefore affecting your work also.

This condition was not even put before we moved in, but alas we cant do much. I talked to the president of the society, and he said that the people in association have a problem with it. Dude its my life, my room, my fucking apartment. I pay the rent, I should be able to do whatever i want, who are they to tell us what and what not to do. I've been a single renter and I've been a home owner who considered renting a well. As you said, it's a game of probability for me. With bachelors, the biggest issue is accountability. If they make some issues, and have to be kicked out, they'll find it much easier to move out, compared to a family. This reinforces the belief that they're more likely to cause issues, as accountability is low. Family person have more restrictions, as they have to worry about kids, parents, and other norms. So, they're unlikely to cause issues compared to bachelors. Not saying that bachelors cause issues always. I was one. I was quite model person, who didn't drink, didn't have parties, and mostly helpful to neighbors and good with apartment. But, I know many of my friends who weren't. So, it's a probability game, where single are beaten in renter's market. (One way home owners offset this risk, is by asking singles to pay higher rent. But, that's again risk hedging)

I was earning well, decent looking, had my own home in Mumbai in my early 30’s and quite successful in my life but I was only judged by people and friends around me ki shaadi nahi hui bichaare ki not on my knowledge skills independent life etc. bas jaha jaao people are obsessed with shaadi … for me, my mental peace is important. But my friends and people around literally pushed me to this level that I was like I am done with this shit. US is way better in such stuff and I peacefully belong here I feel.

I still remember when i was coming to India back from meeting my parents in Dubai. I was sitting with a woman who was coming back from Dubai to India to do a function. She was in her 30s and she did her degree in genetics something we bonded over as i am doing my degree in biotechnology. We went over the topic of marriage after talking science and shit and i asked her if she was single and she said she wasn't, now i am single not by choice but she was. She explained that she isn't planning to get married and her explanation is that until she truly believes that she can settle down she isn't going to get married as she said if she marries a person she will live him for decades. That's a lot of time. In 30 years she was able to become a child to a woman. A marriage sometimes is longer than that. When i heard that i realised that marriage is simple. It is a commitment issue and although divorce exists no one truly wants to take it. But unfortunately if the current kind of forced marriages occur divorces will occur obvsly. In a way it's better to separate 2 people who can hurt each other.

hey mohak i totally agree on the context that our Indian societies basis is marriage but on the topic u mentioned of singles adopting children and the ashram or wherever the child is being adopted from tells the person to get married and then adopt . i think theres a reason behind that as a child with no father figure around as we row older it becomes difficult to deal with men as we have in our deep subconscious that they will leave us too . for a childs psychological development it is very very important to have both parents around as the roles of both the genders in our lives indirectly tells us how the outside world will be and how to deal with people later in life . if u adopt a child being single they'll only know one parent and the other half will be missing and their cognitive development will be affected . also as a person who loves kids and would like to adopt in the future i would want the best for them but at the same time if i can only provide one parent for the child and there is no male figure around ill be doing injustice to the child and i consider it selfish . we adults adopt when 'we' feel like and even after that if we cant provide bare minimum for the inner development then its a failure . then we are basically adopting becoz 'we' like kids and they bring 'us' fun rather than thinking about them and how can we help them grow . there is also an element of cultural social programing which strengthens this.Ceremonies are designed to achieve this. For an average person who havent had any athletic, academic artistic or otherwise, any achievements ,something like a marriage ceremony gives them a sense of achievement, this could have been that only time in their life, where there is a special event,in their honor ,where they are congratulated ,given gifts, and their friends ,family and social circles come together to celebrate them, for those people this would feel like a validation that they have been seeking their whole life and those naive people wants to 'share' that experience with others and goes around and tells other people to do what they did.

Have you ever heard the term "single shaming"? Sure, we have heard about terms like "fat shaming," which generally refers to people shaming a certain body type. Similarly to this, "single shaming" is when people have a negative attitude towards people who are single after a certain age. This is something that is casually thrown around all the time.

Wish to god ? Oh dear. Please stop. I know you mean well and I thank you for that. However, if god really existed, he would have protected me from the crime in the first place. You need to understand reality properly. I would love to help you understand it. Only when you have understood it properly will you start caring about justice in the right way.

That is a bad philosophy of life, imo. To constantly tell people to be grateful is bad. If someone loses his or her eyes, will you then say that they should be grateful that they have their other senses intact ? If they lose most or all of them, will you then say that they should be grateful to be simply alive, even if like a vegetable ? I hope not I am glad that it didn't get any worse. But it's bad enough. I have been EXTREMELY stressed for more than 1 year now. Only one life. So much to do. Career. Savings. Family. Etc etc etc. And you say this ? I don't wanna make you feel bad. You just need to understand reality. Nobody knows how the universe began. About how life began. Let's not assume. Let's understand that humans have free will (a compatibilist one, but still) and create a system a justice system that maximizes well being.
