    Yes, anyone who knows history knows many Europeans colonized Africa, the Middle East, and South America. That’s where multiracial people come from...colonization. It’s been going on since the beginning of time. People conquer the lands of others and mate with the locals.

    Yeah, that’s true but often times with Latinos their mixed backgrounds come from way back when. Also, they grew up in a sovereign country and they have acquired a national identity. I am mixed, but I don’t really think of myself as mixed because I have a strong sense of national identity. These people were born in the U.S. and have to struggle with two different cultures. In contrast, most Latinos know they’re mixed but have lost that connection with their ancestors.

    I'm Bi-racial, and the sad thing I found out from when I grew up, I asked myself, "why is this an important subject?" When your a mixed race, you might find out that you don't need to be like one or the other because its hard to fit in at times. You just need to act yourself.

    My wife is Latina (mostly native south American), and we have three children. We never put it in their minds that daddy was one race and mommy was another. They just know that Dad's family was Irish and speak English, and Mom's family is Colombian and speak mostly Spanish. It was never, "Dad's white and Mom's Hispanic" as if we were two different species. I think that this approach was beneficial to them. They don't feel conflicted, and they don't feel as if they are "different". Each one of our children identifies him/herself through what he/she is as an individual (their likes, dislikes and achievements), not through what races their mom and dad are.

    Sandra Prusaka All I can say is that perception is not reality, and lots of times a child's warped perception comes from the parents. I'm not against talking about the reality of race in this country, but too often children don't go out and try to achieve their very best because well meaning parents have drilled it in their minds that they're going to be rejected just because of their race.

    OnTreader The fact that there are several languages and several currencies has, in my opinion, nothing to do with this race issue. The concept race has caused enough oppression and hate in the world. There is no biological reason for concept "race", thus it should be forgotten. Such thinking that "races shouldn't be mixed" or something, is from the middle ages.

  • @OnTreader

    @OnTreader

    9 жыл бұрын

    Voitto Kotiaho i don't think you really care about oppression or hatred, because language, currency, culture, and everything else that makes one people different from another people causes it just the same. why does there have to be biological reasons for race? there ARE, but why would it matter? correct me if i'm wrong, but there are absolutely no biological reasons for humanity to have more than one language. if you're so determined for every human being to be the same, why stop at race? the "races shouldn't be mixed" thought is from a LOT earlier than the middle ages, mate, and it still persists today (just like plenty of other thoughts) so what relevance does that have, besides that it's been able to persist through countless generations and is only JUST getting snagged? you're so obsessed with progress that you regard everything from the past as bad and anything new as good?

  • @66Flux

    @66Flux

    9 жыл бұрын

    OnTreader So what? Oppression and hatred are caused by concept r despite these things are caused by other issues too. If there were biological reasons for concept r, I couldn't say that this concept should be forgotten. I know there are average differences between humans living in the other parts of the world, but are there unambiguous biological reasons for concept r? I'm not determined for every human being to be the same. I'm determined that no human being shouldn't oppress other human being. And I have nothing against an idea that all the humens would speak the same language. But that's not the issue here. "the "races shouldn't be mixed" thought is from a LOT earlier than the middle ages" I know, so what? "and it still persists today" Yes, and that's the problem. Has there been a single moment in human history when using concept race has caused love, friendship and kindness among human beings? Seriously, it is only a short ago when people were oppressed by state using this concept. It would be ok to me if different skin colors or different facial features were regarded as the same as there are different hair colors or eye colors. Or different blood types.

  • @OnTreader

    @OnTreader

    9 жыл бұрын

    Voitto Kotiaho "If there were biological reasons for concept r, I couldn't say that this concept should be forgotten." why? why's the biological aspect more important than the social one? different races exist in the first place because earlier humans made their home in all kinds of different environments, right? and generation after generation they each became more and more adapted to their respective environments, yes? the reason it's still valued and SHOULD still be valued today, is that none of our ancestors had television, internet, etc to connect them with the rest of humanity: they developed distinct culture, as distinct as their race. the two things are parallel, you see? they will always correlate. if you force two cultures to mix, they will destroy each other and blend into one. if you force two races to mix, they will destroy each other and blend into one. you end up with one race which reflects one culture. this happens right in front of all you virtuous people and you call it "equality" while one percent of you owns fifty percent of the world's money. "Has there been a single moment in human history when using concept race has caused love, friendship and kindness among human beings? Seriously, it is only a short ago when people were oppressed by state using this concept." EVERY moment in human history you can see race inspiring love, friendship, and kindness. it's human nature, but you refuse to see it because you insist that race is meaningless. it was only a short time ago when those people being oppressed by the state were banding together and fighting for the welfare of their people.

    Being biracial myself, I find it incredible to embody this fascinating experience that other people find "disturbing" and "revolting". But I think the real interesting story is what happens when a mixed child or person blends to represent families of drastically different ethnic cultures, languages, religions - when ethnocentricity goes international. Kudos to Faisal for mentioning that!

I figured they were staring to try to figure out what race I was. I just want to say before starting this that I’m not angry or anything, just explaining. I know that sometimes tones can be misconstrued over the internet. I’m not looking for an argument or anything. I understand the diversity of Mexico, but I have Native Mexican genetics. A lot of my family members look much darker than I do. I just took after my mother. I was raised in an Anglo and Hispanic household, so I know all about the racial classifications and how Mexicans are extremely genetically diverse. It’s just easier to classify my British half as white and my Mexican half as Mexican or Hispanic. After a while, it gets annoying having to explain this technicality to people because it’s usually implied that I’m separating ethnic backgrounds and not proper race, so I just say Hispanic and white. My dad’s side of the family is pretty dark though, so I was just saying that it’s frustrating when people tell me that I’m not really Mexican or that I have to choose a side. I like having both cultures as part of my life. When the general American thinks of a Mexican though, they usually picture a stereotypical Hispanic person rather than someone who is lighter skinned like me. And the term isn’t used to separate south and North America btw. I mean, Mexico isn’t even in South America and they are definitely Hispanic. The term is used to describe people of Spanish origin. People from Spain are also considered Hispanic. The term has nothing to do with geography. Spain just happened to colonize Mexico, Central America, and South America. The boundary is due to cultural differences, not just separating the United States and Canada from everything else. I probably do have more European blood, but my problem isn’t with the percentage of European genetics to Native genetics. My problem is with people who can’t recognize that just because someone doesn’t look like a stereotypical Mexican, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a right to celebrate their Hispanic traditions. Reminder... not mad, just responding. 😁

I even had my dads, sisters, daughter tell me she’s not my cousin because I’m white. It’s so annoying. Honestly hate being mixed because of the lack of understanding from other people

    Growing up I always dealt with issue when it came down to my race it's like I was always judged and stood out from the black kids that I went to school with since I'm multiracial. I'm mixed with African American, Choctaw, French, and Mexican. But I have a caramel skin complexion and everytime I'm outside or at school I always get asked am I mixed because I guess I don't show enough black features or look black enough and for a long time I felt out of place with my classmates that we're black and I always said that I'm black since I felt that I did look black and it recently took for my mother to sit down with me and have a talk with me about my race and identity for me to finally say yes I'm mixed and I can't really be put in one box and just because I'm mixed I'm still like other black people in some way.

    I struggle with how I identify in a way that best represents my experience. I am Black and Carib Indian and because I look mostly black I dentify mostly with that side and feel this overwhelming pressure to hide my other side/pretend it doesn't exist for fear of being accused of exaggerating or being anti-black all while still hearing from the same community that (due to my hair texture) because I am not FULLY black that I am not black enough or a real black person. I have looked countlessly for people in a similar space who feel the same as me. It feels like it doesn't exist. I feel like I can't identify with the mixed race/ multi-racial community because I have dark skin and I am not white presenting because this is the media's main portrayal of what being of mixed origin is. It's very lonely and frustrating.

    as someone who is multi-racial, I think we (multi-racial peoples) have an advantagesover others who are not. We have been aware and thought deeply about who we are and where we come from since we could see that not everyone around us (parents included) look like we do. If one acknowledges all sides of one's origins and history then we are less likely to get bogged down in black-white arguments.

I used to live in Montreal and there most white people I talked to told me that I look like an arab (from my perspective, it's the other way around - arabs look like Brazilians, even though our cultures are very different). In Toronto, where I live now, nobody has ever said to me that I look arab. They tell me I'm latino right away (which I'm alright with since Brazil is in Latin America). Arabs complain that people think they're latinos in Toronto.

White people see me as black or mixed race and think nothing of it. Its all so lame. I never considered my self mixed until black people made me realize I was. It sucks that I dont have a community and I've faced a lot of hate from every race (a lot of black women have said cruel things to me but it may just be where I live). And a lot of mixed people go through the same thing. It's sort of a given that people of color will face hate from white people but they are simply acknowledging it comes from black people too, not hating. Mixed people are essentially their own people and on their own (we might as well make our own community)

So what you end up looking like kind of shapes a part of you. What do others think?
