This is something I’ve chosen to confront about myself this year. I have given up on so many passions due to fear of not being good enough, and of not being perfect. I’m about to do a big move in my life, and maybe even a career change, and I look forward to striving for excellence, and no longer look for perfection.

This holds me back soooooo much! I've turned down or scared myself out of opportunities because I know the quality or "perfection" wont be up to par with how I know it could or should be. GREAT VIDEO!!!!

my psychologist called me a "perfectionist" a couple days ago. at first I completely disagreed with her cause in my mind being "perfectionist " meant that you'd be a person who has their shit together , a person who's very organized , a person who's calm and collected. and I was none of the things above so i couldn't be a perfectionist right? I was messy , I was never collected , I couldn't even get shit done even tho I knew if I started I'd get my work done so quickly and so simply. but all of these were caused because of perfectionism. if I think that I won't be the greatest the most perfect thing at that job I will never try to do it. cause in my mind being perfect is the only way to do something. i am a younger part of your audience however this video helped me realize a lot things about myself and the perspective I have. realizing that these ideas and emotions actually come from fear is enlightening. thanks as always 💖💖💖💖💖💖

Well said! One thing i try to remember is that no one knows what the vision in our head was at the time of creation. We may feel like we failed because the end result wasn't exactly what we had drawn up in our mind, but no one else knows what that vision was. They see it for what it is, not what we thought it should've been. The best test of this is to look back at your work several weeks or months later. 80% of the time you won't notice any mistakes or why you thought it wasn't good enough in the first place. Time is the only thing that gives an artist perspective. Ironically, time is the thing we are always anxiously fighting and it's the only thing that can bring us peace.

Paralysis of analysis….another great video revealing the weakness in people that struggle with perfectionism. This has literally lost me countless time, hours and years trying to figure out what content to push out for myself. My background is also in media but as an over thinker does, I’ve tried being very specific on an idea and it has always ended it being so overwhelmed that I don’t execute. Thanks for the honest talk on your videos Pat. This stuff is invaluable.

Awesome video! Perfectionism is definitely toxic, it’s a struggle for me, and I have been working on improving this by just take actions and push my works out soon once they’re “finished”. Certainly not easy to do, and I still failed more often I wanted, but whenever I made it through, it allows me to gain better momentum to move forward as you mentioned. Thanks for sharing Pat!

Loved this Pat, thank you for sharing. I’m a recovering perfectionist, and where I used to see this as a badge of honour (it was weirdly a compliment when I was growing up, was it the same for you too?), i’ve realised in recent years how little energy it leaves me for creativity. Definitely food for thought when you spoke about the stages in the process perfectionism shows up most. I think I might be the same, at the end, I definitely drag my feet for fear of calling a painting finished and it not being everything and a packet of crisps I’d envisioned it being in the early stages of inspiration! Some compartmentalising to do there, for sure. Thank you for the timely reminder - Mel.

Pat. Something you allude to, that the Pareto Principle of 80% takes (or should take) 20% of the effort, the opposite is true too. That attempting to complete the final 20% because of perfection, will take 80% of the effort. That is a disproportionately, ridiculous, use of our time that not only grinds us down, but it effectively drains us of opportunity to create, make money and ultimately pursue life. The amount of times I’ve tried to get an edit right, then tapped on the screen to see the original, to only then realise I’ve going down a rabbit hole and the original only needed light tweaking. Thanks for a brutally honest video.

This was an awesome video Pat, & so true aswell. I've always said that practice makes improvement, not perfection, because you can always better your "best" & I agree the more you chase the illusion of perfection, the more miserable you will be, which will ultimately prevent you from growing, & suck the fun out of your craft. You can achieve excellence, but not perfection, because there are no perfect people, so why not put that energy to good use instead, right? 😊👌 Love your content & your message brother. 😎👍

I believe - "Perfection is in the eye of the beholder" sometimes a perfect picture looks artificial and an not so perfect one looks more believable or natural. Having said that I think we always need to try and give it our best shot, but also need to know when to stop. Its how prefect can perfect get. I really liked your talk about Perfectionist. Perfectionism is a good thing. You can't make other people happy if you are not happy. You can't be calm to others, if you are not calm in your head.If you change yourself in to something you are not... Believe me, it could hold you back on some business, but you will never be satisfied with the thinks you have delivered . There are 2 types, the one doing it for the money, the one is doing it for the satisfaction and pride. The one you have to force in, is not who you are and over time... you won't be happy. I'm a perfectionist over the top on everything whole my life (50 now) And in my profession, people hire me for my perfectionism. I rather want people to hire me because I'm the best in what I do than they hire me because I'm cheap. I would never won't to change that. Accept who you are... and don't look what others do. Be happy that you are not like 90% of other people. I hope I never loose that perfectionism. Inside my head I never have rest, and I would not sell that for nothing. This perfectionism has taken me to know and discover things that I otherwise never would have known.

PAT, my question is, how do I make pictures without the support of something interesting like the sunset or sunrise, in a boring farm area. or is the point of the 27 photos per day, just to build the habit of 27 photos completed and the content doesn't matter because your ideas will come over time? ? I need help with 27 photos per day, I'm living at home taking care of my grandma and I only get out to go for a walk when she's sleeping... I am far from the city and I want to practice 27 photos a day like you said but I'm feeling sort of resistance because I feel like my area is not very interesting. I thought about changing my focal length from 35mm *my walk around* to maybe a wide or tele lens, because it will change my perspective, but even if I use a fisheye or macro lens I seem to be running out of ideas maybe my perfectionist mind feels like there should be a subject because I'm used to shooting landscapes at the beach finding leading lines with the sky and its easy to show off the beauty because the sunshine is my supporting cast when it sets. I found myself holding back because my supporting cast isn't there when its rainy and I have nothing interesting to take photos of so I run out of ideas, its easier to take portraits and landscapes for me but maybe I can take pictures of my family.. hmm or 27 pictures a day of my grandma... please your clarification would be so much appreciated!!

in short, the purpose is precisely to help you out of the limitations you’re placing on yourself; to break free of what you think “boring” is. to try something new and push yourself to be creative. the purpose is to make your brain sweat, just like in the gym with your body 💪

@@patkay oh essentially what you're saying is, we're not supposed to judge the quality of the output, rather... to continue to input the habit and put those reps in. make every rep count, but its not as important as the next rep. you can't even lift weights if you're not in the gym that helps so much!!! so instead of judging the limitation, just know that maybe I'm finding an excuse not to do it and to lean in a bit more??

@@patkay so basically don't judge what you do, just do. and as you continually do, it will improve. thank you so much

@@patkay Yes, I need to flesh out those imperfect random thoughts to form 'ON PAPER', instead of fighting for preconcepulized frameworks, alas, random and whims do have more resonance.
