Being a Black Immigrant in Sweden 🇸🇪

Being a Black Immigrant in Sweden is exactly what you might expect. In this video I share my struggles as well as my little weekend getaway surrounding myself with island folk doing BIG TINGS! Apparently I’ve been missing out on the countryside and getting more inspiration to move back to the city but where and when?

As a first generation west african girl pursuing her doctoral degree in clinical psychology this video made me so emotional Maya! I’ve been dealing with so much imposter syndrome and wanting to give up but seeing these black women with their gowns and hats and the joy on their faces really gave me the encouragement that I too can do it! Thank you for sharing 🩷

Maya as long as I've been a viewer since the NY days, I know you love learning and writing. I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit for your ability to excel academically. Not saying you need to jump into a doctoral program, but there's a wide range of programs from online ones to interdisciplinary. It's all about finding the right one for you and the right program mentor. And I know what you're thinking, "I'm a full-time mom + content creator, there's no way!" I used to work in the Marketing dept in a Caribbean university (love your island love btw). I interviewed people after they graduated for their social media pages. Almost without fail, every mother would say that they were able to finish the program because their child made them stronger / was their inspiration. The more you know! ❤

  • 7 ай бұрын

I don’t think it’s about not giving herself enough credit, it’s just what she said,”she knows what she wants.” I agree with you, she is always learning something and could definitely succeed academically…. However, her independent way of learning works better for her, when you go to college you need to follow a program it can be a little bit hard and even not necessary. Maya is someone that if she wants and is excited to learn more about skin care she will take a course (if she wants) or spend a lot of time googling info. During her search if she feels like she wants to know more about dry skin she will them focus on dry skin and find all the info about dry skin. The problem with college is that you can’t stop at the moment to learn more about dry skin since you need to move to a different topic and you need to spend your time wisely or you fail. I definitely wish I knew what I wanted so I could tell people to leave me alone 😂

I remember first moving away, living in a village, going back home to Toronto and visiting a grocery store. Born and breed in T.O. I don't know why I reacted so strongly. I had to walk out of the grocery. Visually there was so much choice! where do I begin? Lovely you celebrated with your friends accomplishments. - very giving. I'm a black woman born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. I would hate to live in a smaller city because I wouldnt be able to get easy access to makeup for darker skin tones or black hair care products. Stockholm is also a lot more mixed and more open to other cultures in my opinion. I would really recommend Stockholm! You can find countryside/rural places in the Stockholm area as well. Haha love that you went to Ullared! You can really find some good deals in there!

Then we'll be moving to wherever I get my doctorate in Theology. I said the same thing, Maya. Might I suggest you take one semester at a community college or a smaller college, and if you don't like it, you'll know. I surprisingly loved learning at my older age. I'm purposeful, and that makes a difference with patience and engagement.

Wow! Love the colors of their regalia & your support. Glad you have a sense of community there. I totally relate to this on so many levels as a Jamaican living in the US. Was the only Afro-Caribbean in my PhD program in Lousiana, then, the only black female professor at a university in Utah & then I moved to ATL & felt like I could blend in more. My research & writing is always about the Afro-Caribbean immigrant experience in some way. Feeling inside of & outside of a society simultaneously is such a destabilizing feeling sometimes but finding community & connecting more with family & culture is a MUST for survival. The only thing is I grew up uber religious, went through my atheist period after a major life event in my 20s, but now I'm more agnostic. 🤷🏾‍♀️

You got me a bit emotional when you shared your connection with the sister from the Bahamas. I actually was born and raised there and it a rare thing to us Caribbean folks to explore places like these optionally. So on that note, I’m looking and really desire to explore new territories as such. Connecting with nature and experiencing the countryside that offers lush greenery, lakes and mountains. But I know diversity in these places would be limited when finding a place of belonging. So I am so appreciative to you Mya for sharing your ongoing life journey with us all these years. I know some of us are living vicariously through the lens of how life would be like if we were in your shoes, but at the same time you’re braved through it all victoriously even through hard times. Moves to Sweden(Gothenburg) on a small Island called Brännö) 3 years ago but only half the year. Im from the US/California. Im 50 and learning Swedish is 😵‍💫😫. Also aint no Black people on this little Island and the stares and weird behavior of the White people here is exhaustive. I be so happy to go back to Los Angeles 🤘🏾👍🏾. This content so relatable. 🦋🌺🦋

Maya I enjoy how you are opening up and mentioning more about your relationship with Yahweh, That GOD vs science is a good outlook; "Science tries to help people understand GOD", well said done. I am a fully persuaded Child of GOD. I rarely trust science but I totally am taught by the Holy Ghost because I do street evangelism. The Father has you planted there on the countryside so the Holy Ghost can use you to educate the people whom you encounter about Him (Mark 16:15-16). I believe Yahweh's plan for me is living out the rest of my journey in a small community somewhere. Dont know where yet. I am also inspired and am planning to go back and finish my education. I'm 60. Congrats to all the graduates featuring your friend Crystal. That store is huge. That could be a separate vlog. Thanks for sharing.

This >> "I believe science is the attempt to understand God." As a scientist & a Christian, I agree 💯 . It's my awe, respect for, and desire to be a good steward of creation (and a desire to ignite these sentiments in others) that led me to become a scientist in the first place. Congrats to your friend! 🎓🥂 And also to your gorgeous twists! lol
