Behind the scenes of Westknits MKAL 2022, The Urban Purl | FIberchats
Leila Bux, the founder of The Urban Purl, is a one woman show, creating colours galore on yarn and fibre from her studio in North West London.
A long-time knitter and crocheter, Leila began dyeing yarn as an ongoing extension of exploring creativity in colour, subsequently launching The Urban Purl yarn brand online in 2017.
A culturally rich and diverse upbringing in West London has greatly influenced Leila’s creativity, leading to a fascination with urban/cityscapes. The graphic imagery of urban dereliction and the colours generated by the natural processes of deconstruction (she’s not emo or morbid, promise!) imbues many of her colourways with a dynamic urban, gritty quality. She is also known for her intricate semi-tonals, lightly peppered with speckles, that has become the brand signature.
A maximalist at heart, Leila creates darkly blended moody colours, as well as rich and vibrant hues with or without speckles. Yarn texture, dimension and handle are key factors when choosing the right yarns for her colours and Leila constantly strives to keep her yarn choices luxurious yet sustainable, ecologically friendly and as cruelty free as possible.

I adore using new yarns. So West knits introduces me to many. Now I’m finding you are introducing me to others and new designers as well. Love it and your questions make what you do fascinating 😮😊😂. 🙏 Thanks ☺️ so much ❤

awesome, can't wait to see your shawl
Love it!!! After seeing Leila's colors I'm MUCH happier with mine!! Similar grey & dark, but my "pop" is different. I agree, it's the unknown that makes you question your decisions.... I've made numerous westknits, but my first MKAL.

I am a new to knitting. Irina you and Martyn convinced me to participate in this year’s MKAL. I love all colors but One of my favorites is the wine/oxblood reds. I ordered the Heart Sunset kit. I wanted a warm color for my first MKAL. Since my birthday is in October, I treated myself to a kit. It’s wonderful to see the person who dyed these beautiful colorway.

@@Fiberchats I totally agree with you.
I wonder why red is harder to sell? It’s my staple colour for like 30 years. Mind you, I haven’t been feeling like knitting my red yarn lately. Is it because I don’t SEE red yarn in other people’s latest projects? Btw, Leila was so lovely and her thoughts about colour helped me. And although I am not sure yet what I’m definitely going to use for the MKAL, this video did lead me to purchasing some of Leila’s yarn. Swirling sweet depth in those colours. And she does something which most dyers don’t but which is hugely helpful to me; she adds written descriptions of the colourways. So that gives me confidence with how to interpret the skeins I’m looking at through my screen.

Hello from Mounds Illinois!
Great interview as usual. So I bought a kit and I wasn’t so sure that I liked it enough for Stephen’s mystery KAL ,even though I bought it as one of his curated kits. Tomorrow in my mail should be something from a dyer that made kits. I’m hoping for something more satisfying. Not knowing keeps me doubting my choices. Good luck with your choice.

it's just not easy, specially having no idea what the shawl will look like
Thank you Leila & Irina. Leila ~ your colours are beautiful. I did not get a chance to nab one of your kits, so sad. Very interesting interview, as always Irina. You make your interviews feel like I’m in the room and a part of the conversation. Can’t wait to start the Make a long. I too keep changing my mind about the colour choices 😩
