Behind-the-scenes of taking an NFL team on the road

Every week, the NFL packs up and moves not only their team, but also 16,000 pounds of gear. How do they transport it all? Jan Crawford tagged along for the ride with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New York Jets came to my hometown for the past few years, and they would always come to the restaurant I worked at. So I had a pretty cool experience because I loved talking to the guys, and I can give you a quick rundown of their personalities. Antonio Cromartie was a pretty genuinely nice guy, and we talked for a while. Nick Mangold is really personable and he's hilarious. Geno Smith was pretty quiet and didn't really talk to us a lot, and I actually got to talk to Chris Ivory a lot, he was the man. But the coolest guy on the entire team was the equipment manager. He was super cool, and he would visit my restaurant multiple times a week, he was honestly like a friend to me for the few weeks he was here. His car was always full of dirty shoulder pads and practice jerseys, and he was always drenched in sweat from lugging around this equipment all day. He gave me a whole new respect for the behind the scenes guys in the NFL.

Apparently the Bucs use (for this trip to Pitt anyway) a smaller airplane than most NFL teams. I was surprised to see it was a 757, just a single aisle, narrow body. Most NFL teams travel with twin aisle, wide body airplanes. I have observed (via Flightradar24) that the Cincy Bengals always charter with Delta and always seem to be in a 767-300 or A330-200. The NE Patriots own their own aircraft, two actually, both 767-300's. And the AZ Cardinals also have their own jet, probably the largest airplane any NFL team travels on, a 777-200. For anyone not familiar with commercial airplanes, those last four models mentioned are much larger and roomier than that 757 the Bucs were using in this video.

For those who think baseball is more difficult than football because of the traveling is missing the point. Yes baseball has way more games but the amount of equipment used to practice and play is far less than what is needed for a football team.

But the bottom line is that football teams travel FAR less than teams in the other sports, especially NBA and NHL. Eight times a year, compared to 20-30 times for baseball teams and 41 times for NFL and NBA teams (some teams like the NY and NJ teams travel a bit less, obviously). Plus, football teams have far more downtime between travel days than the other three major sports leagues.

Neat, seems bittersweet. You hate traveling but you want that ultimate goal. I have a different level of respect for the linesmen, Lovie is absolutely right. I feel that way as well, they don't get the respect they deserve and first class seating is more than appropriate.

That's interesting that they still have to go through TSA security for a privet chartered jet. Normally when you rent a privet jet, you just drive right up to it and walk on board.

It's because the charter flights are operated under FAA Part 121 rules instead of Part 91 or 135 rules that other private and charter flights adhere to. Plus the airlines want security to protect their own staff and aircraft.

Fire Dolphin They talk about it like it's the biggest problem in the world that they have to move "all that gear" like 8 times per season. I find that very ignorant and amusing

  • @Bucboy1001

Well there's a lot that goes into it in terms of planning and time management, regardless if it's done 8 times a year or more. You also have to consider there are more than three times as many NFL players and coaches on a given roster compared to an NHL team It's not ignorant at all. Just sounds like you want to shit on football for whatever reason. Should I remind you that baseball travels even more than hockey teams?

Jollvardscoots For real, I remember in the military, we'd have to move thousands of pounds of gear in hours at least 15-20 times a year going out to the field. And since I was communications, a lot of that gear was classified and couldn't be packed up the day prior, so we had to wake up and get to work at like 3 in the morning to finish packing, organize which trucks the gear is going on, get them loaded, which trucks of ours were going, install comm equipment, withdraw rifles from the armory, and get all that done by like 6 only to be told that the truck drivers were late and wouldn't be ready until 11. So you'd think higher ups would learn and relax the time schedule, nope. Every damn time, hurry up and then wait for 5 hours. This moving NFL teams 8 times a year would be a cake walk for people who did that, as long as they pay enough.
