Markus Wilmsmann from mothergrid watched an absolutely stunning Depeche Mode show on 18th of January at Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin.
Before the gig he got the chance to talk to Antony King, who is responsible for Depeche Modes live sound for more than ten years now.
At FoH there are two SSL Live L500 consoles, plus a massive siderack with good old analogue gear from Warm Audio, SPL, TC Electronics and many more. The sound system consists of a massive amount of L-Acoustics K1 plus KS28 subwoofer. The microphone setup is realised mainly with equipment from beyerdynamic.
The main challenge, according to Antony King, is to make Depeche Mode sound „modern“, without forgetting about their more than 35 years long history.

Those SSL 500s are so freaking sweet. Those sliders are wicked fast. This could be an hour long and I would not be bored.

Well, this is the person we have to say 'thank you' for that bass drum from hell. In St. Petersburg '17 the drums were like an earthquake. You can also hear it on videos from other concerts. After those perfect SOTU and DM tours it was a bit shocking. 'Our standards are sinking' :)

Think about all the shows this guy have done over the years. Things must go south some evenings. We all know that things and gear breaks sometimes. Imagine something cracks down an hour before the show. Or maybe not all the gear arrives to the right place on the right time. There must be a hell of a pressure on these kind of people. Cant be an easy job.

Those people shouldn't attend a live stadium concert in this case... My problem is that on some stadiums the overall sound was poor. Muffled. Strong, but not clear.

Bring the drums down, and let some synths and arps cut through, saw DM a the garden NYC, not bad sound at all, just a lot of drums and vocals, gtrs were there yes. Very little synths, samplers overall. Just MHO.

I have seen 16 shows so far on this tour. I just wish it would have been better sound for a band like Depeche Mode. The worst sound was in Gdansk, Poland. Way too loud, too much drums, could hardly hear Daves voice. I was always wondering if the Foh guy doesnt hear that it is so bad and why it could not sound better.
