So awesome to shoot in the snow you take beautiful photos. I'm from south Texas, but we did get one snow day this past Christmas so that was nice. Can't wait to get my 5dmark iv this month, super excited!

Wow beautiful! Wish I could go to the US, locations like these are stunning! And thank you for making me look up "back button focus", been an equine photograph for 11 yrs but never heard of this. Just tried it out, really made everything more easy. Can't wait 'til we get more snow so I can try it out for real. ^^

Love your work! I have a question ~ I have recently started using cameras and just got a Canon Rebel T6 yesterday for Christmas. That being said, what are some good starter lenses that can take good quality action shots of horses?

Hi Jojo! Congratulations on getting a new camera! For horses, you want to have a lens that can zoom to at least 100mm, 200 is even better. The reason is that shorter lenses will distort horses when they are facing you. Which lens you choose will depend on your budget. :)

Hello Shelley, When you are shooting, do you use a single focus point, or 9 focus points ect?

Did you use an nd filter while shooting in the snow?

  • @shelleypaulsonphotography

I don't. The only time I use an ND filter is when I am doing video and need to control my shutter speed for smooth motion.

Hey, how goals you are! Did I hear right that you use the back button focusing..? Do you have any tips on how to focus with that when the object (horse for example) is moving towards the camera? I find it hard to stay focused and it makes me think if I should give up the back button focusing. Another question: Is shutterspeed of 6.5 enough to photograph horses (jumping, dressage, bucking on the field..?) I've got Canon eos 7D but I'd like to move on to 6D mk ii because of the full frame so that I'd take photos in darker places too (in the evening) without so much grain.

When I am photographing anything in motion, I use AI Servo, which does its best to predict focus. I usually focus on the horse's face or shoulder and keep the button pressed down so it just keeps tracking focus. Shutter speed of 6.5? I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean 1/6.5 or 1/640 or ??

Shelley Paulson Hey, Sorry for a bad form for my questions. 😉 I meant the speed of camera's burstmode! It's 8 pics per second on 7D but only 6.5 on 6D mk ii so I Wonder if it's enough for those activities I listed. So you don't use that back button focus at all? Arrgh, I've missed so many shots because of this. 😣

No problem! I think 6.5 shots per second is plenty. I try not to shoot at a rate that would fill the buffer and make me wait. That said, I've never owned a 6D, so I can't say for certain. I ALWAYS use BBF. AI servo is a focusing mode you select on the camera. But I always shoot with only the back button for focus. It's worked well for me for years. :)
