Beginners Guide to the FZ300/330 - Part 2 - the iA modes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A rather long episode however I thought it only right to not undersell the features of this camera or limit the amount of information that I could deliver to help you understand this camera in greater detail.
The iA mode is a perfect operating mode to appreciate how the camera can deliver very acceptable images in the majority of scenes that are presented to it.
It is also important to learn where the iA mode is going to limit your creativity and under-deliver in terms of image quality.

Your tutorials are an answer to a prayer. My head is swimming with new ideas. All through the video I found myself saying "gosh, I wish I had known that when" ..... (fill in the instance). I love this camera in spite of the frustration that I've felt trying to adapt to the UI with such a minimum amount of photography knowledge. Walking us through the menus is really helpful. We recently returned from an 8,500 mile journey where on Day 5 of 44, I rolled my ankle and scraped my knee when I fell trying to "get that shot". In an attempt to brake my fall (apparently) I let go of the camera in a flinging motion which pitched it maybe 8 feet in the air landing about 10 feet away. Aside from the pain from skin loss, I was mortified about what I saw happening in "slow motion" at that point. The reason for mentioning all this is that the camera came away unscathed and was used to document our travels for the next 39 days. Considering what it went through, I'm amazed at how great most of the pictures were that I took. I can hardly wait for the next adventure now that I know so much more ... thank you :-)

Graham, superb videos! Thanks so much they’re sooooo helpful! May I ask a couple of questions? I’m a total novice having just bought this camera with some trepidation as I was fearful of being overwhelmed with complications! Around 7mins in you say that the sharpest aperture is 4.0. But the screen goes up to 8 so I don’t understand? Second question is around the colour balance. You kindly explain it and then take a few photos. Are these adjustments you can make after the photo is taken or must they be made before the photo is taken? Ie take a photo, see it’s wrong, adjust and retake? You can’t adjust retrospectively I mean? Much obliged!

Hello, I'm now watching your videos, great work! I recently bought this camera and I'm disappointed with it's perfomance in nature shots. Greens are very dull and grayish and contrast is very high. I went on a mountain and compared my photos with those I took last time with my Lumix TZ40 and the TZ40 ones where WAY better. I tried different modes and color saturation but I'm still not satisfied. Could it be that my camera is faulty? I also have a serious problem with ISO. When I work in auto, it gets very high ISOs and produces too much noise. Indoor photos with plenty of light where my older Lumix cameras where working with ISO 100, 200 or 400 MAX, are now taken with ISO 2000 or 2500!!! I even took some samples right after sunset and they went for 2000 ISO instead of 100! Auto ISO is not practicaly working since it should be able to be correctly set according to the surrounding light and conditions...

Thank you for this series. I was sorry to see that the focal length is not recorded in the additional image info. If one brings RAW files into a photo editor program that handles same, a focal length does appear - but do we need do convert to a 35mm equivalent focal length by multiplying the displayed number by 5.62? A newbie here - to photography itself. .... and to this camera. I hope to learn how to use manual focus later in the series (I also bought your book from Amazon, so will search that also) - thinking I will use a semi-automatic mode such a A priority or S priority for desired effect. Yet, I'd like to be able to list the focal length used in shots - on top of ISO, F and S stops. Other thoughts?

I use Photoshop Elements 2018 for now. Been taught that focal length and aperture impacts DOF - so want to track and understand the combos of same in reviewing DOF results.

Hello Graham, thank you for your instruction video's, very usefull. I've noticed that when I use background defocus Mode and if I choose an aperture, I can't use Subject Motion Tracking. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is there a way around it.

Hi Graham, just got my FZ300 (of course after seeing your videos) and in iA+ (iA), the focus grids don't stay on until the time of the shutter is fully pressed. When I half press, it shows the focus squares in green but don't stay on until the shutter fully pressed. This is not the case in my Sony and Nikon cameras. Even in this video, I can see something similar. Is this normal for FZ300?

Yes this is normal, when you half depress the shutter button you will see that some of the 49 area rectangles will illuminate green followed by a short beep. This is when the camera has acquired and locked focus. If the camera cannot lock focus you will not get the confirmation beep and the camera will remind you of the focus range for the zoom that you have deployed on the camera

Thx for the quick reply Graham. Looks like Panasonic does differently things when compared to my Nikon and Sony. One more question if you don't mind related to the focus modes. The point focus option (the last on the list) is frozen in my view and I know it's a setting that I've changed which caused it. Would you know what's causing it please?
