I'll never paint anything bigger than a bird bath as I'm disabled I won’t ever be able to touch a car. That didn’t stop me thoroughly enjoying this video. Passion, enthusiasm and knowledge never fail to get my attention and you had them by the bucket full. With the respirator my first wife's husband was a paint mixer. He started in the mid 70s when safety wasn’t as important in the U.K., he now has early onset dementia. Though it can’t be proven it’s highly suspected it was the chemicals he worked with. It’s not just lungs the paint affects. Part of my condition is usual nerve damage that's closing my lungs down and I also have extreme persistent atopic asthma. Having a lung condition that will kill you in the next few years is hard work at times. I always wear a full face mask and don’t take it off until I’m away from the paint. I’m glad someone deletes nasty comments, I’m all for healthy debate but nastiness for the sake of it is immature and pointless.

Buffing and polishing is not hard by no means but like yourself I was once new to it as well. My recommendation is this. Go to a scrap yard and buy a black fender or a hood with curves or edges and practice. If you can find ones with sharp edges (this is where people generally fuck it up) and learn how to use your polisher on/around these edges. A best of all tip I was told when I first started humpteen yrs ago in a body shop is let the tool and polish do the work and do not force the tool. Once you start to force the tool then you are inviting fuck ups. I bought a 2002 Sonoma ZR5 in black, and after the fact (not that it really mattered as I loved the little mini truck) I was not happy with the finish of the clear coat and the shine. I really had very little knowledge of painting then or clear coats or how thick the layers were. But I tackled the thing with 800 through 6000 (it was labeled in micros from lee valley) grit paper that I use to polish my chisels to a mirror finish. It took from friday after work til 4 am sunday morning to finish under halogen lights. The guys at work asked if i painted my tuck over the weekend and I told them I just wet sanded it and waxed. Another tip if you choose to wet sand. 4-6 passes over any given area with 800 will give you your first stage of level. Jump to 1600 or at min 1200. Still use the 4-6 passes. Then jump to 25-26-2800 then to 6k. My method now is always double the last grit and if I can find it double it + 2-400. If i cannot find it I step up to 6-800. better a few extra passes than the one pass that burns through with a lower grit. A $100-500 tip is alot better than paying out $6-1000 to fix your fuck up and your fuck up being spread via social media.

That particular comment was quite valuable, as it fit my situation perfectly. 1st time painter, brand new gun, old boat & new project! The clock in the background and cleaning your gun was perfect. All the way from South Africa, great video Pete. Iv been spraying for a while now and mostly 3d printed parts and a few other things. Just a comment to those starting off and wanting to begin and become good at it, Spray painting takes a lot of practicing and training yourself. Start off with the correct techniques and methods as Pete showed and it will become natural over time. Especially cleaning guns,I have seen loads of people that will leave paint to dry in a gun or inadequately clean a gun and the next time they spray they get it all wrong. Personally I don't go to the extreme of cleaning my gun like Pete and do that once a month but my guns stay clean internally all the time. Thanks Pete for all your knowledge that you share.

Hi Pete, I live in England and have been painting cars and lorry's since the late seventies. I have used cellulose, acrylic, synthetic enamel and lately two pack or 2K. I have done a few re-paints in 2K but straight colours only. I have a classic Ford Corsair, which was based on the American Thunderbird but it is metallic blue. I had asked several people how to do a base and clear coat but every answer was different. So, I turned to KZread and your channel came up. I found this video very informative and the use of the clock inspired me to get the car painted. I put a clock on the wall , like you showed. I wet flatted the boot lid (trunk lid) with 800 and wiped it over with panel cleaner then tack ragged it off. I used my smaller DeVilbiss touch-up gun and put the base coat on thinly leaving 10 minutes between coats, 4 in all. Then by using the clock I cleaned the gun and tidied my tool room up a bit. After 45 minutes I mixed the clear and put a 'dust' coat on followed by 4 more coats at 10 minute intervals. That was 2 hours ago. I have just been out to have a look and the finish is great, lovely depth and high gloss. I thoroughly recommend your channel to anyone wanting a good guide to painting. I have been in the job for nearly 40 years but you taught me something today that I can use in future.

That is an incredible comment! Thank you very much. I have been working on cars for 35 plus years and I learn something new every day. I never claim to know everything, but I can share what I do know. We are all here to learn and if we just take the time to share we will make this world an easier place to live in. I really try to find creative ways to show what is important, like time in this video. I'm so happy it turned out well for you.
