How long does it take you to wash, style, and dry your curls? The steps for this routine and products are outlined in this blog post: genamarie.co/2023/01/quick-easy-beginner-friendly-curly-hair-routine/

About 90 mins start to finish w/ diffusing. Takes me about 20 mins to diffuse w/ my Dyson. My hair is almost identical to yours in density, curl pattern & length…but my color is a dirty blonde (per my hairdresser) & a light brown by my description😊

I just tried this method , it took me about 30 minutes, I have short (ear length) hair, I used a curl cream and the Ouidad gel, I had never used a gel before, game changer. Diffused and finished with a bit of oil to break the cast, my hair is so soft and got good volume. My hair has been thinning (age) and the curls and volume definitely help that, have a bit of frizz but improving my technique should help with that I think! Thank you for the easy beginner routine
I love this because this is realistically the amount of time I have to wash and style on a busy day. Thank you for sharing your tips!
I also like that the Ouidad adds heat protectant.
Love the kinky curly curling custard for use as a gel. Decently strong hold and adds shine.
Thank you, Gena, for these wash day tips. Conditioner before shampooing was great. Usually my hair tangles so much as soon water touches it. The brush styling doesn’t work for my waves but that’s okay. Using prayer hands & scrunching working the products in will work. I never thought I could style without having soaking wet hair. The micro plopping worked so well. 😊
Great video, thanks Gena! 😊
Great video!!! Thank you for sharing ❣️☺️ Have a GREAT 2023!!!!
Love it 💯!! Great job Gena and your honest tutorial ❤

Such obvious and perfect advice to start with conditioner. In a sea of methods tools products and combinations of the 3 sometimes being reminded of the basics feels very liberating ❤❤

So glad!
The clip on my part has been a great tip for me.
I'm sure you have already tried this gel, but if not the Aussie Instant Freeze gel gives really good hold and is moisturizing
I would love to see you review the verb curl products.
I'll put conditioner in my hair first too sometimes before shampooing esp if my hair's very dry or knotted. I'll apply it mid to ends, shampoo 2x then condition all over (usually the first round is a cheaper conditioner then the second "real" conditioner, a much nicer, moisturizing one. Definitely does make detangling and brushing a lot easier. Sometimes I'll put in the conditioner, put my hair up then shower before I get into shampooing and conditioning to allow the conditioner time to work it's magic. Love a simplified, easy and fast routine! I didn't diffuse in the past but in the last few months have got into it. Esp when I'm washing at night. I can diffuse in some 8-10 minutes. It's odd though, I've noticed when diffusing for whatever reason, the under portions of my hair frizz up vs air drying. Maybe I'm not using enough product in that area 🤔
Ive been doing the CGM for 1 month and it takes me 1 1/2 hrs. I feel like once i get the routine and brush styling techniques down, it will be faster 😊
Looks great! One issue with that hair dryer I'm having is the position of that cool shot. My thumb keeps pushing it. Loving your content!!
Have you tried snot, aussie instant freeze, Harry's, tuff stuff shockwaves or innersense I create hold for gel?
Thanks for the video! Video idea - how to use up products you don’t like (if you can’t give them away).
Love those claw clips. It give me more volume on my crown.
Wow, Gena! Great video! I loved it all, but especially loved the tip on when you put in your root clips! My roots are not as fluffy as a lot of people's or as I'd like, for that matter, and I've been wanting to try root clips. I haven't been able to find curl clips, so I bought some regular clips as close as I could get to those clips. I just washed my hair. Now, to style and try the clips. Thank you!! Update: Wow! What a game changer!! The clips worked great!

I had to laugh...I washed my hair tonight, put my bonnet on and sat down to watch your video. The products you used in your hair in this video are the same ones I had just used! Guess I'm learning something. Haha
Try Harry'sgel! It's usually in the men's care section, but it has great hold!

I used that tonight and I've gone to bed with a old cast. I didn't even plan to use it, I'd been sent the new redken so soft line to try and it really was so soft, even with mousse, gel and more gel. My hair felt amazing but after diffusing for a while it just got too soft lol so I used 3 big blobs of Harry's slightly watered down and finished diffusing. It's now happily crunchy in my bonnet to scrunch out in morning😍! It really is a no fail gel when you want a cast ☺️!
So after some trial and error my curly hair really loves moisture and to air dry not diffuse. My hair also loves the matrix curl can dream gel.
Hello, when I defuse or use a blow dry, I use a blow dry cream to protect from the heat. With this hair routine, at what step would I apply the blow dry cream?
Thanks for this video! I don't have a lot of time to get ready in the morning, so this is helpful. When you put in your cream and gel (the first time), do you also add water to it?
@GenaMarie

Your hair is super cute. Great curl pattern. Is your hair layered and what temp and speed is your dryer on for diffusing? Thanks
@GenaMarie
Жыл бұрын
I alternate between high heat and medium heat and low speed. I would never use high heat on any other dryer though other than the Curlmsith. The Curlsmith Dryer doesn't get too hot like most dryers.
My hair last longer with style and go. When I diffuse, I get extra frizz on day two. I do hover diffuse just to get out the water. I hate that I haven’t found a routine that I like 😢😢
So do you do cream before gel all the time? I’m coming from DevaCurl and I did Plumping Primer, Ultra Defining Gel, and the the soufflé cream.
Thanks for all your videos! Question: does a light leave in conditioner also bring Ph down after shampooing? My fine hair doesn’t love rinse out conditioner every wash.

Gina, please give me some help! I am kinda new on this curl journey, and I have noticed my curls looking wonky! Then I read an article on "Protein vs no protein" and realized all my products have protein!! Can you give me some ideas on how to "balance" this? Do I use protein products one week and go protein free the next??
Question...how long should I wait between applying products?
Can I use Air Dry Cream before the gel?
What is this spray bottle you use?
Twist by Ouidad is a drugstore version of Ouidad's product line. Manes by Mell has a video comparing OG Ouidad and Twist by Ouidad to see if they duped themselves. Might be more affordable option than normal Ouidad.

@@Justme77400 It's almost impossible, but what seems to be popular these days is using a watery foam on completely dry hair and just scrunching it in - it only takes about one minute - no diffusing. Is curling cream activator the same as gel. Can it be used as a substitute to gel?
@NadiraJamal
Жыл бұрын
I only just learned the answer to this last month! Creams are (usually) products that add moisture to reduce frizz and encourage clumping. Some also have some hold, but whether and how much varies. Gels create hold. Some also have moisturizing ingredients to reduce frizz and help clump. A cream with more hold or a gel with more moisture can be used as a “one and done styler”, which is convenient, but makes this all more confusing. It also doesn’t help that product labels can be pretty vague about what the product does or how to use it. Lina’s Lovely Locks has a great series on what the different product types are and what they’re for: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmWJ2beenJbJlrg.html (Beginning of the series) kzread.info/dash/bejne/anmHudWAoL3Tnw.html (hydrating stylers like creams) kzread.info/dash/bejne/lp-plrN_p5Ccnso.html (hold products like gels) I found that series really helpful because most creators assume you already know this, so they don’t explain it, even in beginner tutorials. (Not criticizing anyone here, it’s just that by the time you get really good at something, it’s easy to forget that others might not know!)
If I manage to get a hard cast with gel, by the next day my hair feels like straw. I’ve been just sticking to cream but obviously don’t get that longer lasting cast. Any suggestions? I’ve used NYM and Aussie gel.
@GenaMarie
Жыл бұрын
You should try a more moisturizing gel. The Aussie gel is very drying in my opinion and not my preferred gel type. My hair feels like straw with it.Whereas with the Ouidad gel I shared in this video, it's very flexible, has great slip for refreshing, and moisturizing.

You asked for a drug store recommendation of a long-lasting gel. About three years ago, you made a video on the Shea Moisture JBCO strong hold gel and you loved it, but you haven't included it in any recent "favorites" videos and I wondered why. I tried it for the first time recently and got the most bomb results that lasted for days! I guess it's not technically "drug store" and it can be difficult to find, but Bed Bath & Beyond has it for about $9.00.

Would love a video showing your hair straight. Then straight to curly. Do you ever flat iron your hair?
@GenaMarie
Жыл бұрын
No, because my hair gets damaged so easily. It's taken me 4 years to repair it so I wouldn't want to get set back by straightening it. It wasn't as curly, was more frizzy and dry when I used to straighten it and go back and forth.
@rachellep2581
Жыл бұрын
@GenaMarie though I understand. I feel like never flat ironing my hair was like the curly girl method. A extreme. When done so on healthy hair with heat protection and regular bond treatments. Hair health is virtually unaffected. My curls after a flatiron are even more volumnious. Its been eye opening for me. To love my curls but also the flexibility.
I didn't know that you could scrunch out the crunch by diffusing.
Wow 35min? Impressive. Just detangling is at least 10-15 min. Styling takes a while and it also takes forever to dry. I use the towel but I'm careful as it sometimes creates frizz

It may also be your hair type. I have the dyson but I still have to diffuse for 45 minutes to get my hair to like 90% dry. My hair is really dense and holds onto water like crazy. When i upgraded to the dyson from a $25 blow dryer I timed it, and the dyson saved me like half an hour. So, the right blow dryer can definitely make a difference but for some hair types it just takes a long time no matter what.
